Thank you in advance for your help.
When I am working on my computer - whether in an e-mail, word document, or searching…my computer will freeze after a while, and has to be resarted. My reset button works…but sometimes even after I do this it will freeze up again. I usually leave it on at night and when I go in –in the AM to begin working…it will have to be restarted again. I have Norton anti-virus and it is up to date. computer is also slow.

Hello fran

Welcome to the Whatthetech Malware Removal Forum, sorry about the delay, but the amount of people posting with infected computers is through the roof and sometimes we can't get to logs as fast as we would like to.

I am looking at a clean log, not to say something could be hiding.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

Run this scan please

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt to your post. in your reply
Dear Ken…No problem with your getting back to me…Thank you for your time…I hope I followed your advice correctly. I couldn't find the extra.txt at first…so the times are different…Hope that is not a problem…Thank you again, Fran

Hello,

Did you run ATF Cleaner, it should have cleaned this out
C:\Documents and Settings\Justo\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\XLW0PFL2\dss[1].exe

Still nothing earthshattering on your log. Lets run this other scan and if it comes up clean I will link you to some windows support sites that deal with issues like your having as this forum is for removing Malware only.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.<– Don't forget this
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.
Not sure I am replying as requested…I hit "fast reply"…but not sure this was OK This may be a duplicate…If it is "Sorry." By the way, I did run the ATF cleaner before. Hi Fran

Malwarebytes picked up and removed Hotbar which is malware. Still I don't believe that Hotbar would be causing you issues. The last thing I can suggest is to run a free online virus scanner, I will give you two to run in case one fails to run.

This may take awhile .

Run this free online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan: Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
Post the log along with a New HJT Log into your next reply.

Run Panda's ActiveScan and perform a full system scan. This will only run with Internet Explorer
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the "Scan your PC" button
  • A new window will open…click the big "Check Now" button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It will take a couple minutes)
  • If you are on a slow connection it will take about 15 minuites for the scanner to load.
  • Click on "Local Disks" to start the scan
  • Once scan is done, click "see report" then "save report"
  • Save the log someplace you can find
  • Reboot
  • Post the Panda scan results in your next reply
Ken…I have been trying to get onto Kaspersky by clicking the site you printed…However, what comes up is "404 not found" I googled the name and got many Kaspersky sites…which usually clicked back to a main one….They don't ask for ActiveX…but want me to install "Java"….????
Bypass Kaspersky , I heard the newer version was going to require Java but I didn't think it was happening already, thanks for the heads up.

Run Panda and here is another one to try also.

Please run this free online virus scanner from ESET
  • Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is ticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic
Could not get on Panda… Used ESET…and it took a very long time. Thanks for all your help today…but…I have to get some sleep…this stuff is exhausting…. probably because I really don't know what I am doing….Thanks again..Fran # version=4 # OnlineScanner.ocx=1.0.0.56 # OnlineScannerDLLA.dll=1, 0, 0, 51 # OnlineScannerDLLW.dll=1, 0, 0, 51 # OnlineScannerUninstaller.exe=1, 0, 0, 49 # vers_standard_module=3244 (20080705) # vers_arch_module=1.064 (20080214) # vers_adv_heur_module=1.064 (20070717) # EOSSerial=455b7598928a6343b746e10abb9d8a80 # end=finished # remove_checked=true # unwanted_checked=true # utc_time=2008-07-07 02:31:08 # local_time=2008-07-06 10:31:08 (-0500, Eastern Daylight Time) # country="United States" # osver=5.1.2600 NT Service Pack 2 # scanned=260205 # found=0 # scan_time=4009
Good Morning Fran

It looks like your system is free of Malware and Viruses, most times the issue you having are hard to diagnose. Think back about the time this started, at that point did you install any new software programs or a new piece of hardware like a scanner, printer or anything like that? If you did you can try uninstalling them and see if it helps. This is as far as I can go as we just do malware removal in this forum. I am linking you to some fine windows support forums that deal with issues your having, like this one there free but you have to register.

One of the links is for PcPitStop, you can run your system through a series of tests, save the report as one of the techs will ask to see it if you let them know you ran it. Run the Full Tests. I would run the tests at the Pit, then post in Our Own forum .

Hi Ken…I can't thank you enough for all the help you have given me….I was in Jersey City today and so wasn't able to pick up your e-mail until now. I certainly appreciate your referrals for ongoing help and I will make use of them. Unfortuately, I won't be able to continue the search until the weekend –since my "real work" has to come first. I will let you know of any results…. Again, Thank You….and …may the Computer Angels be with you….Fran
Good luck with your issue Fran, when you post to the other forum, come back to this one and copy and paste the link to it so I can follow along and offer any help that I can. Ken :)
Since this issue appears to be resolved … this Topic has been closed. Glad we could be of assistance. If you're the topic starter, and need this topic reopened, please contact a staff member with the address of the thread. Everyone else please begin a New Topic.
