I'm not sure if it's a unwanted program, virus or something more serious internally on my desktop PC. It started with not booting up right, to the point now where I have to use a Windows XP CD every time to boot up. Now it takes forever for my computer to shut down, there's at least 5 processes that have to be ended manually everytime. And now programs are starting to freeze up or just close unexpectedly in the middle of my work. On a positive note, my laptop that What The Tech helped fix is running perfectly. I hope the same result will happen for my desktop.

Can I ask why you are running everything from F: ?

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

The forum is run by volunteers who donate their time and expertise.

After I ran the Malwarebytes scan WinPatrol popped up with registry changes alerts.

Yes. It removed bad entries from the registry.

This item indicates you have a Backdoor.Win32.Rbot.buy infection.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Win Update] msnmger.exe

W32/Rbot-GDP is a worm with IRC backdoor functionality for the Windows platform.

W32/Rbot-GDP runs continuously in the background, providing a backdoor server which allows a remote intruder to gain access and control over the computer via IRC channels.

  • WARNING: IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts
  • Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
--------------------------------------------------------------------

In response to the question about my drives, I built this computer myself, it was my first build. I installed windows on a brand new drive and also installed one from my old PC because it had important files on it. When I was setting everything up I guess it didn't matter to me how they were assigned because I knew which was which.

After the ComboFix scan Nod 32 Popped up with a virus warning for Eicar Test File. Event occurred on a new file created by the application: F:\WINDOWS\system32\CF22959.exe. The file was moved to quarantine. You may close this window. Other than that I haven't had anything crash on me today, though it did run a little slow for a while this afternoon.

When it shut down last night it didn't ask me to end any processes and it shut down like it's supposed to do. But it did ask me to end two after I did this re-start. I haven't worked on it much today but I will be shortly. Internet explorer hasn't froze since I started doing this.

It froze on me. I opened up my video editing program and when I went to import a file it froze and wouldn't close down. Opened up My Computer, that froze and wouldn't close then I lost my desktop. Tried to shut down but in the end I had to do an emergency shut down. It wasn't the first time it'a happened but I hate it when all my external drives are powered when it does it. Makes me nervous. lol

Your logs look clean to me. I suggest you start a new topic here.
http://forums.whatth...dware_f126.html

Do this first:

Good job

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Here's my usual all clean post

    Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

    %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

    Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
    Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      • Click once on the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Note: I no longer suggest Zone Alarm

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Winpatrol

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
