Erased data?

i just recently merged 2 partitions on my 250 gig harddrive and the only thing that is on it now is the system volume information. i did all the tricks to view the folders but there are no files present. I've done this before to an 80 gig harddrive but without the loss of files as in they were still intact, viewable and accessable. My question is: if there is still the system volume information on that drive is it possible to recover my lost files somehow?
