Hi,

This is my home PC. A Packard Bell XP PC with 1GB RAM, 2.80GHZ Processor and 140GB Harddrive. It is not part of any home network and connects directly through to the internet.

Lately we began limewiring and it has never really been the same since. Just generally Sluggish.

I have checked for Spyware (Spyware Terminator) Viruses (Avira) Cleaned up Reg and obsolete Files (Ace Utilities) Removed Suspicious Programs (Big Maq Tool Bar) all without success.
I do not feel that a Defrag, Error Check or Clean up will yield any results as the sudden change implied to me at least that there is a more to this.

Please see my Hijack This Log, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Lotus

Welcome to the Forums.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. So lets do this to the end!

  • Save and quit any work your doing before beginning the fix.
  • All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
  • These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.

Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

I can't see anything signifigant in your log, so let's look at a few things.

Lime Wire.

A majority of infected computers have some sort of file sharing program and is where amany get infected.
It's not the program so much as it is the garbage that gets downloaded with them. Please do not use this program untll I have you all clean.
I would give some thought to not using such a program.

__________________________________________

Were you using Nortons Anti Virus program before Avira ?

It doesn't look as if Nortons uninstalled cleanly.
We can fix that.

Download and run the appropriate tool for you norton product as described by year..

# I have a Norton 2008 product
# I have a Norton 2007 product
# I have a Norton 2006 product
# I have a Norton 2005 or 2004 product
# I have a Norton 2003 product

This should remove any leftovers from Norton's that I see. They can also slow your system down.

Hi Bob4,

PC Seems to be running more quicker now, Thanks.

Malwarebytes seemed to make a big difference.

One thing that did happen before and during the Kaspersky Scan ironically, was a TR/Drop.Softomat.AN detection twice.
I denied access initially (Default from Avira) second time quarantined. Not sure if it is safe yet.

Also, is it possible to remove the Redburn parts too as i no longer work there? If not, no biggie.

KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER 7 REPORT
Thursday, June 26, 2008
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600)
Kaspersky Online Scanner 7 version: 7.0.25.0
Program database last update: Thursday, June 26, 2008 17:45:34
Records in database: 884878
——————————————————————————–

Scan settings:
Scan using the following database: extended
Scan archives: yes
Scan mail databases: yes

Scan area - My Computer:
C:\
D:\
E:\

Scan statistics:
Files scanned: 95814
Threat name: 0
Infected objects: 0
Suspicious objects: 0
Duration of the scan: 01:49:02

No malware has been detected. The scan area is clean.

The selected area was scanned.
My best educated guess is that avira found a left over inside a restore point that malwarebytes already cleaned and as Kaspersky found it it aleted Avira..

But lets look at the report.

Open Avira Personal edition:
Click on :
Viiew–> Overview –> Reports
Select report date, Right click to select Display Report File or F3.

Post the contents of that report.

You did just fine. As I thought Avira picked up what was in a restore point. We will clean those in a few minutes.

Great news ! [external image: Posted Image]

Your log now appears to be clean.

Lets do a few things to tidy up.
Please do these in the order I suggest!

Open Malwarebytes

1. Click on Quarintine

2. Click on delete all.

close that.

Please create a 'clean' System Restore Point:
The reason for doing this is in case you need system restore you don't put back all we just took out.
Right click My Computer
Then Propeties then system restore
Place a check mark by turn off system restore
Click APPLY
Windows will give you a warning click yes
REBOOT

Now go right back to the same place and unchecksystem restore
Click APPLYand OK

A few things to help with possible threats

These are optional . But will help protect you further.

Download and Install a HOSTS File
A Hosts file is a plain text file which prevents your computer from connecting to malware and spyware sites by redirecting the connection request to 127.0.0.1, which is your local address. If you use a proxy server, or if you are on AOL, be sure to read the special instructions.
You can download the MVPS Hosts File and see a HOSTS file tutorial here :
This website also contains useful tips, and links to other resources and utilities.

Here's a site with great advise on how to AVOID malware. Much easier to do than removing it.
