Hi all.

I'm looking at a Compaq Presario, 1.5GHz with half a gig of RAM and Win XP Home SP3, which seems to be running very slow.

There's a couple of very dubious entries in the HJT log ( O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [1] × -and- O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [2]
Ø) but AVG hasn't objected. Before I wade in too far, I figured to let you boys and girls loose on the log, so here it is:

Hi John K,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Let's get a better look:

  • Download DDS and save it to your desktop from
  • Here
  • here or
  • here.
    • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
    • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
    • When done, DDS.txt will open.
    • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
    • Save both reports to your desktop.
  • We Need to check for Rootkits with RootRepeal
    • Download RootRepeal from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop.
    • Open [external image: Posted Image] on your desktop.
    • Click the [external image: Posted Image] tab.
    • Click the [external image: Posted Image] button.
    • In the Select Scan dialog, check
      [external image: Posted Image]
    • Push Ok
    • Check the box for your main system drive (Usually C:), and press Ok.
    • Allow RootRepeal to run a scan of your system. This may take some time.
    • Once the scan completes, push the [external image: Posted Image] button. Save the log to your desktop, using a distinctive name, such as RootRepeal.txt.
  • Copy/paste the log (that you've previously saved to your desktop) from RootRepeal onto your post.

  • Copy/paste the DDS.txt log (that you've previously saved to your desktop) onto your post.

  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scroling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and then click UPLOAD.
Hi Tomk and thanks for replying. Ran DDS and Root Repeal OK. One thing with Root Repeal though: you asked me to (B) open it, © click "Report" tab, (d) click "Scan" button, (e) check items in the "Select Scan" dialogue, (f) click "OK" and then (g) Check the box for your main system drive (Usually C:), and press Ok. I got as far as (f) but the scan started without me having the opportunity to do (g). Yes, AVG database is out of date - I've not connected the PC to my network so it's not had a chance to update. I'll make sure it's all updated later. Here's the results anyway and attach.txt is - er - attached DDS (Ver_09-06-26.01) - NTFSx86 Run by [removed] at 21:57:33.53 on 17/09/2009 Internet Explorer: 8.0.6001.18702 Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition 5.1.2600.3.1252.44.1033.18.478.140 [GMT 1:00] AV: AVG Anti-Virus Free *On-access scanning disabled* (Outdated) {17DDD097-36FF-435F-9E1B-52D74245D6BF} ============== Running Processes =============== C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost -k DcomLaunch svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k WudfServiceGroup svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe svchost.exe C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgwdsvc.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jqs.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k imgsvc C:\Program Files\Vodafone\Vodafone Mobile Connect\Bin\VMCService.exe C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgrsx.exe C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgnsx.exe C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgemc.exe C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgcsrvx.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wscntfy.exe C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPLpr.exe C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPEnh.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxtray.exe C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe C:\Program Files\HPQ\Quick Launch Buttons\EabServr.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Nokia\NOKIAP~1\LAUNCH~1.EXE C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgtray.exe C:\Program Files\Vodafone\Vodafone Mobile Connect\Bin\MobileConnect.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Auto Update\RIMAutoUpdate.exe C:\Program Files\Nokia\Nokia PC Suite 6\PcSync2.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\TomTom HOME 2\HOMERunner.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\ISUSPM.exe C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Digital Imaging\bin\hpobnz08.exe C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Digital Imaging\bin\hpotdd01.exe C:\Program Files\ScanSoft\NaturallySpeaking\Program\natspeak.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\PCSuite\Services\ServiceLayer.exe C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\Nokia\MPAPI\MPAPI3s.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\WINWORD.EXE C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgcsrvx.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Derek Budden\Desktop\dds.scr ============== Pseudo HJT Report =============== uStart Page = hxxp://www.google.co.uk/ uSearch Page = hxxp://www.google.com uSearch Bar = hxxp://www.google.com/ie uSearchMigratedDefaultURL = hxxp://www.google.com/search?q={searchTerms}&sourceid;=ie7&rls;=com.microsoft:en-US&ie;=utf8&oe;=utf8 uInternet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1 uSearchAssistant = hxxp://www.google.com/ie uSearchURL,(Default) = hxxp://www.google.com/search?q=%s mSearchAssistant = hxxp://www.google.com/ie uURLSearchHooks: AVG Security Toolbar BHO: {a3bc75a2-1f87-4686-aa43-5347d756017c} - John K,

Those are rather strange entries.

Let's run this before taking any drastic measures. :)

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Hi Tomk and thanks for the help. Right, another day done at the coalface and back to relaxation. (I do this for FUN??????). Installed MBAM and updated it before running. It did find one nasty and removed it. Here's the log Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.41 Database version: 2821 Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 18/09/2009 20:40:46 mbam-log-2009-09-18 (20-40-46).txt Scan type: Quick Scan Objects scanned: 113898 Time elapsed: 15 minute(s), 7 second(s) Memory Processes Infected: 0 Memory Modules Infected: 0 Registry Keys Infected: 1 Registry Values Infected: 0 Registry Data Items Infected: 0 Folders Infected: 0 Files Infected: 0 Memory Processes Infected: (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Infected: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Stats\{ad7fafb0-16d6-40c3-af27-585d6e6453fd} (Trojan.BHO) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully. John K,

I do this for FUN

You to huh? I cheat a little because I'm actually still at work. I'm actually in the process of fitting a Roof structure to an Elementary School but this breaks up the day. :)

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_…ams_t96260.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Hi Tomk. I put an EPDM roof on our garage roof a year or so back. That broke up several days

Combofix found a few things it didn't like and stamped on them. Here's the log:

Take care up there on the roof!
John K,

Take care up there on the roof!

I guess technically only my head is actually on the roof because the masonry walls are just above the first floor and all of the 2nd floor joists haven't even been rolled yet. I'm figuring out lines and grades for the mason and getting trusses and joists designed and ordered (big surprise but the hips and valleys wouldn't come together correctly the way the architect drew them). Roofing will be metal but there is a little TPO at a mechanical well. We don't see EPDM used much anymore.

COMBOFIX-Script

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    Registry::
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "1"=-
    "2"=-
  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.
Hi Tomk.

Its been a busy weekend - we've had the hen and stag parties to kick off the celebrations for my daughter's wedding early net month, so time on this problem PC has been a bit limited. Nevertheless, here's the Combofix and Kaspersky logs.

Looking good, so far and thanks for the help. What do you think we've had and killed off so far?

The PC does seem a bit slow, but I have a feeling it has something to do with the sheer amount of carp** that runs. (I'll discuss this with Derek later and see if there's not a few bits we can knock off.)

John K,

Congratulations on the upcoming nuptials.

We haven't found a whole lot on this machine. There were some remnants of an old trojan and then those two "weird" entries in the registry. I don't know what they were. Seeing as how they attempted to operate at startup, I had hoped that removing them would return some speed to the system.

I suggest that you read this tutorial on slow running computers
and Help! My computer is slow! by miekiemoes.

Meanwhile, Log looks good :D

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • [external image: Posted Image]
The above procedure will:
  • Implement some cleanup procedures.
  • Reset System Restore.

Please re-enable any security that was disabled.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Also: "How to prevent malware"
by miekiemoes

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
Hi Tomk and thanks for the fast reply! Combofix now uninstalled and AVG re-enabled and updated. I'll have a read of your help pages and pass on the links to Derek as well. We'll have a review of the stuff he has autostarting and see what can be weeded out. In the meantime lots of thanks for your help. :adios:
Since this issue appears to be resolved … this Topic has been closed. Glad we could be of assistance. If you're the topic starter, and need this topic reopened, please contact a staff member with the address of the thread. Everyone else please begin a New Topic.
