Ok, This is my Gateway N570NX Laptop we will be working on, Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, SP2, I use AOL and Verizon DSL on this one, so I do have the Free AOL version of McAfee Security Center installed since I'm a AOL member, might install the Verizon Security on it one day. OK, so what do you want me to do or post 1st. I am suppose to go for a job interview Monday and start Tuesday if all works out, so this may take a little longer to do this one since I won't be laid off from work, if your ok with that.

Thanks, James

I just wanted to post the 1st HJT log for you, so you can look it over, it is running slow and weird, I bought more memory for this also, but have to install it yet, got it from Kingston, will be 4GB of memory, or 3.5 GB, if I was reading the specs right, I can install 4GB, but it will only be at 3.5 GB. I'm going to try to remove some start up items from the start menu to see if it runs any faster, and run some scans, I'm trying to learn how to clean up machines as maye a part time job.

Thanks, James
Hi again James,

Apart from the slowness of this system are you having any others symtoms, like pop ups, Unwanted Search Results, random freezes or hard drive whirling away when you're not doing anything

Please do not stop any program start ups untill we have had a good look

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager – the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):
  • Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, highlight Viewpoint Manager , click Remove.

Make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

    1. Start HijackThis
    2. Click on the Config button
    3. Click on the Misc Tools button
    4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

Click on the Save list… button and specify where you would like to save this file.
When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file.
Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

    DownLoad CCleaner

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder,
back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

Download CCleaner to clean temp files from your computer.

    http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds/downloading-slim

Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
Select your language and click OK, then next.
Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted.
(If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.

    • Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
    • A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
    • Click "OK"
    • CCleaner will scan and clean your system.
    • When cleaning is complete:
    • Click "Exit".
    • Repeat for all usernames.

Please ensure you runn CCleaner on each user Account before you run the online scan.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    Archives
    Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.

A new HJT Log
Uninstall list
kaspersky Scan Log
No pop ups, but it is just slow and when I right click and try to copy and paste something the window doesn't appear all the way, it's like a ghost until I drag the mouse pointer over it, then it appears faint, sometimes it freezes up and locks up to where it won't do anything, also uses alot of memory, sometimes the task manager shows 100% CPU usage when its froze, I got the T5200 upgraded CPU when I purchased it from Gateway Direct Website, had a bad hard drive the 1st week, they sent me a new one preloaded with the OEM software, I installed it, and it ran fine, I want to get a gaming laptop or desktop one day soon and just use this for work, or may give this one to my dad, whats thre best CPU? Intel or AMD for both gaming and work. Will try to post this stuff for you today and do what you said in post. Thanks, James

Ok here are the scans, take a look and let me know what you think, like I said I am back to work and will try to do it when I get home, but may have to wait for the weekends to do anything.

Thanks, James
Hi James

The kaspersky Scan Log and HJT logs are clean, I think your problems are related to having multiple Anti virus's programs running and a lot of unnecessary start up programs, but we will run
a Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware scan to be sure.

I see from your HJT Log and Uninstall list you have Verizon PC Security, Radialpoint Security Service, Authentium Anti Virus SDK - 2, and McAfee installed, all of which contain a Anti virus Program.
Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having more than one
anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

Please decide which one you would like to keep running and remove the others, it does no good at all to have all
these running, and this would be one reason why your system is so slow, we can look at your protection a little later.

You are running a P2P filesharing programme.

LimeWire 4.16.6

  • Many of these programmes come with unwanted components bundled with them.
  • If you wish to find out whether the one you're using does click here.
Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P programme, it is only the programme that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.
I'd like you to read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic….c8d24e3e96420cc
Remember, no matter how clean the program you're using for peer-to-peer filesharing may be, it offers no guarantees regarding the cleanliness of files you may choose to download.
All files available via p2p filesharing carry a high risk, particularly those that offer you illegitimate methods of using legitimate software programs without paying for them.
Any program or file that offers you the ability to access non-freeware programs at no cost, e.g., pirated software and/or cracks/key generators for gaining access to legitimate software, is 100% guaranteed to contain malware.

An often unanticipated and unintended consequence of using p2p programs is that you may be leaving your computer open to access by others without your knowledge or consent.

NOTE: Under no circumstances should you use p2p filesharing while I am assisting you in ridding your computer of malware.
My recommendation is you uninstall it.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) .
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment JRE 6 Update 6 allows end-users to run Java applications".
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.

You have These

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
Java™ 6 Update 4
Java™ 6 Update 5

Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

I also see you have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware installed which is good, please update it and run a scan, so we can be sure your clean.

  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware select the Update tab. Under Update Mirror, select one of the websites and click on Check for Updates.
  • Select the Scanner tab. Click on Perform full scan, then click on Scan.
  • Leave the default options as it is and click on Start Scan.
  • When done, you will be prompted. Click OK, then click on Show Results.
  • Checked (ticked) all items and click on Remove Selected.
  • After it has removed the items, Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply. You can also find the log in the Logs tab. The bottom most log is the latest.

Post a new HJT log and the Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLog when you get time,

please bear in mind that I am away from home the end of this week for about 10 days, try and get this
done before Friday if possible, if not we can carry on when I get back.

Ok will try to get it done before you leave, I use to have a network wireless card from Verizon, it didn't work back here where I moved so I canceled it, now I just have the DSL service at the house, hope you have a great vacation.

Thanks James
Hi James

Well done on getting all that done, the slowness of your system are not being caused by any infection or Malware, I would suspect that all the start up programs
and unnecessary services you have running are a drain on your system resources, sorry but the right click copy and paste problem are a little out of my Field of expertise.

I am not an expert at this type of problem. I would suggest that you go the MS Windows forum here, that specialise in more general computer problems.
They have people that know more about this sort of problem because it does not seem to be a malware problem.

Here http://forums.whatthetech.com/Microsoft_Windows_f119.html

Ask for help with the copy and paste problem, and also ask for help speeding up your system, were someone can help you cut back on start up programs
and unnecessary services, and other tweaks to help with the speed issues.

Explain that you have been checked for Malware and that you are clean, you could post a link to this topic .

As before keep the ccleaner installed, but delete it's installer, you can also remove HJT by going to add/remove programs and running it's uninstaller,
you can always download and install it again if ever needed.

Hope this helps.

DFW
Ok Thank You, I just wanted to make sure I didn't have any bugs, but I try to keep all my programs up to date and run scans every week, to keep all the carp** off here, thanks for all your help, hope you have a great vacation, enjoy your 10 days of peace, I learned alot and thats a plus. Thanks, James
