[whyme26]

Just recently you all here helped me clean up some very naughty stuff on this PC. It's been working like it was fresh out the box until about a week ago. I've been keeping a close eye on things and use things such as teatimer, mcafee and what not...

About a week or so ago anything related to internet function (IE, Outlook) has been sometimes working, but mostly not. It goes in few minute long spurts, but mostly does nothing. Things like: can't connect to mail server, IE can not display page, Finding www.blah.com.. but never does, things like that. For the first few days I thought it might just be our ISP having problems (Comcast) but now I'm thinking some bugger is hiding out somewhere it seems to only be affecting things that need an internet connection, everything else seems to be running fine...

Anyway, would be in a world of debt if someone could take a look at this HJT log... I might even refer to them as jedi master, binary ninja, or god among gods... if they could find whatever is causing this nonsense, if anything. HelI, would probably refer to you kind folks as that anyway given my previous encounters with the HJT crew

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.


Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.


Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

• Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
• At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
• When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
• Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.

Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

P.S. the computer seems to be acting alright for the most part... dragging here and there, but the main symptom is anything relating to internet function. It goes in spurts of working, then "can't display page" then working, then IE won't load at all. Similar symptoms with Outlook and the remote desktop I use to connect to work. I thought at first it may just be my ISP (comcast) but they say it's not them and it's been going on for a while now so my fear is there is some nasty on the system slowing things down. I've run AVG, Spyware Doctor, A-squared, and the tea-timer is always running... they don't come up with anything besides a few random tracking cookies...

You need To disable TeaTimer, it can stop our fix.

The best way is to do both, Right click the system tray icon and shut down. This will reset TT's registry snapshot. Then, open spybot in advanced mode and turn it off. When cleaning is done, open Spybot in advanced mode to turn back on.

Once fix is completed in the all clear post!!


Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, please delete it from your desktop and download this new version . It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

• Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
• WARNING: IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts
• Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

I didn't find that file, but I did find a trace of it here: C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch\CF14345.EXE-2779A602.pf Shall I delete that? It seems to be running better... Or maybe this is just a longer spurt of "working" than I've seen lately. So far so good though! Thank you for your help with this.

  You need to create a new Clean restore point.
  
  Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points
  
  Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

  Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.
  
  Double-click My Computer.
  Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  Click the View tab.
  Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
  Check "Hide protected operating system files."
  Click Apply, and then click OK.
  
  
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
• Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
  (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  
  
• Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
  Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
  I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
  Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

• Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
  This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
  If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
  until there are no more critical updates.
  
  
• Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
  settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

• Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
  Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
