Hi all. I recently purchased a brand new laptop from HP. Its Windows Vista and is relatively fast. Intel Dual Core processor. I've been experiencing symptoms of a possible spyware, or virus infection. Every so often, I get random pop-ups and most of them say that my privacy is in danger and I need to install something from systemerror.com. My Computer has been running very slowly and I can hear the fan working overtime. I really need help because this is a new computer. Its been 29 days since I bought it, could I still send it back to HP? Here's my Hijack Log

hi georgerowell,

start with this:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop:

http://www.besttechi.../mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt

please post the malwarebytes log in your reply.

thanks for the reply shelf life. Since its been a couple of days since my post, I've managed to talk to an HP support person. We basically did a system restore back to the factory settings. As of right now the pop ups appear to be gone, the symptoms appear to be gone, and everything is running smoothly. BUT, I will post a Hijack Log later tomorrow as right now I'm not on my computer. Everything is running smoothly, but I just want to make sure any malware is gone.

hi georgerowell, ok thanks for the info. actually its possible for malware to get archived in the system restore points. you should still downlaod and scan with malwarebytes. its free to update and scan with, only the real time protection component costs money. dosnt hurt to have 2 anti-malware apps on your computer.

thanks for the quick reply shelf life. I downloaded Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and scanned and this is my log. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.15 Database version: 836 7:25:27 PM 6/6/2008 mbam-log-6-6-2008 (19-25-27).txt Scan type: Full Scan (C:\|D:\|E:\|) Objects scanned: 181889 Time elapsed: 25 minute(s), 48 second(s) Memory Processes Infected: 0 Memory Modules Infected: 0 Registry Keys Infected: 0 Registry Values Infected: 0 Registry Data Items Infected: 0 Folders Infected: 0 Files Infected: 1 Memory Processes Infected: (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Values Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Data Items Infected: (No malicious items detected) Folders Infected: (No malicious items detected) Files Infected: C:\WINDOWS\System32\autorun.inf (Trojan.Agent) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully. It found one at the very end of the scan and it said it deleted it. Another question, Can I use this program and Norton Anti Virus also? or will they conflict.

hi,

Can I use this program and Norton Anti Virus also? or will they conflict.

yes you can, they actually scan for different threats. since it appears you got it sorted out:

My Top Ten:
The Short Version:

1) Keep your OS, browser and software updated.
2) Know what you are installing to your computer. Do you trust the source?
3) Install, keep updated: antivirus and one or two anti-malware applications.
4) Dont click on adds/pop ups or offers from websites to install software.
5) Dont click on offers to "scan" your computer.
6) Dont click on links or install files you receive via E-Mail, IM, Chat Rooms or Social Sites no matter how tempting the message. Do you trust the source?
7) Set up and use limited accounts rather than administrator accounts.
8) Consider using an alternate browser and E-mail client.
9) Install and understand the limitations of a third party software firewall.
10) If your habits include visiting or installing files from: warez,cracks/keygens,P2P or adult sites you are much more likely to encounter malicious code. Do you trust the source?

long version in link below. happy safe surfing

hi,

your welcome.

Does this mean my issue is resolved?

malwarebytes log looks ok. you can post another hjt log to see what it looks like after the system restore as there are malware items in the first one you posted.

how often should I run Malwarebytes

depends on your computing habits really. you have any of those habits in my top ten list?always check for updates before a scan. if you have good computing habits maybe once or twice a week?
