I ran Trend Micro’s HouseCall 6.6 on-line scan and found two ‘problems’: a general cookie; and “Adware_MemWatcher”. However, when I tried to remove them, HouseCall, after two repeated scans, gave me, firstly, a “HouseCall Client cannot be executed due to internal errors” message, and, secondly, failed to fully scan, having frozen the scan part way through (I discovered this the following morning and hope it hasn’t re-scanned the same file for several hours and damaged the drive).

I’ve followed the instructions regarding what to do before posting a HT log and here is the Malwarebytes’ Anti-malware log:

Hi Crimea,

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky:
Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer using this link:
http://www.kaspersky...kavwebscan.html
  • Click Accept and the web scanner will begin to load
  • If a yellow warning bar appears at the top of the browser, click it and choose Install ActiveX Control
  • You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Install
  • If you are prompted about another ActiveX control called Kaspersky Online Scanner GUI part then allow it to be installed also.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on Next and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save Report As... button, change Save as type: to Text file and save the file to your desktop as Kaspersky.txt
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky report and both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.

Hi Crimea,

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, and remove the following:

JavaT 6 Update 3
JavaT 6 Update 5

These are out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (version 6 update 6) from here

You have a program called Coupon Printer installed. I recommend you remove this software as it has been identified as using deceptive tactics and as a privacy threat - more information is available here.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following line:

O20 - AppInit_DLLs:

This is related to Coupon.com and is also a recommended removal

O16 - DPF: {3B5E9B23-7537-4601-A9E8-FA0D956DEA16} (csauie1 Control) - http://www.couponrep...123/csauie1.cab

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fix file associations with DSS:
  • Make sure DSS.exe is on your Desktop
  • Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:

    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft

  • Press OK to the disclaimer(s) and then press Scan
  • Place checkmarks in all the boxes that appear and press Fix
  • Then close Deckard's System Scanner

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Backup Your Registry:
  • Download ERUNT to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Right-click erunt.zip, choose Extract All... and follow the prompts to unzip the program
  • Open the erunt folder on your Desktop and double-click ERUNT.exe to start the program
  • OK all the prompts to back up your registry to the default location.
Note: if it is necessary to restore the registry, open the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

Download secprov.reg to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
Locate secprov.reg on your Desktop, it should look like this:Posted Image
Right-click it and select Merge, when it asks if you want to merge with the registry, click Yes.
You can then delete secprov.reg

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kaspersky flagged this file:

D:\### CD DVD BURNING\NERO 8.1.1.0b\Nero-8.1.1.0b_eng_trial.exe

It was flagged because it contains an adware toolbar as an optional component.
I recommend you delete it, but if you install this program please take care to install it without the toolbar - you are offered the choice during the installation.
Because Nero choose to bundle this type of program, I recommend considering a safe, free alternative such as ImgBurn

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post a new HijackThis log and let me know how your computer is running.

Hi,

I haven't been able to complete your instructions.

I’ve removed Java. Which of the versions on the “Java SE Downloads” page should I install?

When I pressed "Fix Checked", to remove the two components of "Coupon Printer", I received this:

"An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modBackup_MakeBackup(sItem=O20 - AppInit_DLLs: )
Error #5 - Invalid procedure call or argument
Please email me at merijn@spywareinfo.com, reporting the following:
*What you were trying to fix when the error occurred, if applicable
*How you can reproduce the error
*A complete HijackThis scan log, if possible.
Windows version: Windows NT 5.01.2600
MSIE version: 7.00.5730.13
HijackThis version: 1.99.1”

Both components, however, have been removed.

I can’t progress past the "Fix file associations with DSS" part of your instructions.

I'm not given a "Start" button - only "Run" - and so can't add the command you've given. DSS.exe simply runs, producing the HijackThis program window and HJT log, together with the "main.txt" Notepad file.

Thanks.

Hi Crimea,

Sorry you have had some difficulty!

The Java installation you need is called Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6, it's the fifth one down from the top.
You don't need to worry about the HJT error.

In order to perform the DSS instructions, you have to start DSS in a special way. When the instructions refer to Start->Run, they are referring to the Start button on the Taskbar, which you can use to access All Programs, Control Panel, etc. Click the Start button and select Run, this will open the Run dialog box. Then copy/paste the command into the box and press OK.

Another way to open the Run dialog box is to press Windows+R (press & hold the Windows button on your keyboard and then press R). When the Run box opens, copy/paste the command into the box and press OK.

If you try the above and still have difficulty, then please do this:
Open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad into the box and press OK
Select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.
Then, copy/paste the contents of the following code box into Notepad:
"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft
Select File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "daft.bat" (you MUST type the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop and double-click it.
This will launch DSS in Fix File Associations mode, please then continue with the instructions.

Please let me know if you have any further problems.

Sorry to seem like an idiot, but I still can't perform the DSS instructions.

Neither pasting "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft into the Run dialogue box or replacing %userprofile% with Arjun [my name; as in C:\Document and Settings\Arjun\etc] brought up a disclaimer or "Scan" button, simply the "Open File - Security Warning" box I saw before.

I followed you alternative "Notepad" instructions, but, this time, can't find any "runme.bat" file on my Desktop.

What obvious point have I missed?

Thanks.

What obvious point have I missed?

I'm not sure, what you describe sounds like the correct procedure, and a "Open File - Security Warning" box would be not unusual before running a downloaded program. Don't worry, we will do it a different way:

Please download DAFT to your Desktop.
  • Double-click daft.exe to start the program
  • Press OK to the disclaimer(s) and then press Scan
  • Place checkmarks in all the boxes that appear and press Fix
  • Then close DAFT

Then, please continue with the instructions from "Backup Your Registry:"

Hi,

I have the same problem as before, when trying to execute "daft.exe" from my Desktop:
I don't get a disclaimer or any "Scan" button, simply the usual warning box before running a downloaded program.

Are there any boxes I need to check or uncheck, for example in "Folder Options" in Windows Explorer?

I'm baffled, but probably not as much as you.

I don't know if this is in any way linked, but months ago I lost the ability to retrieve files from the Temp folders the way I used to:
Control Panel>>Free up space on your hard disk>C:>[Select] Temporary Internet Files>View Files.
"Disk Cleanup for (C:)" always indicates the total size of files I expect there to be (sometimes 100s MBs), but the Windows Explorer window is always empty, even when "Show hidden files and folders" is selected. For the life of me, I don't know what I could have done to cause this.

simply the usual warning box before running a downloaded program.

What happens when you OK the warning and allow it to run?

You can right-click daft.exe, choose Properties, then click the Unblock button and OK if you wish to avoid the warning.

I ran "daft.exe" successfully:
[Double-click] "daft.exe" > "Run" > "Deckard's Assoc. Fix Tool DISCLAIMER" > "OK" > "Scan" > "Fix".

I backed-up the Registry, using "ERUNT.exe", to C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT\01-06-2008 and merged with "secprov.reg".

Where is the Registry back-up normally located?

I’ve installed, as far as I know, Java SE Runtime Environ. 6u6. The Windows Online Installation was 0.36 MB, as opposed to 15.21 MB for the Offline version.

Hi Crimea,

I'm glad to hear you got things working :)

I backed-up the Registry, using "ERUNT.exe", to C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT\01-06-2008 and merged with "secprov.reg".
Where is the Registry back-up normally located?

That is the normal location for an ERUNT registry backup - does that answer your question?

I’ve installed, as far as I know, Java SE Runtime Environ. 6u6. The Windows Online Installation was 0.36 MB, as opposed to 15.21 MB for the Offline version.

The Java installation looks good

The P.C. seems to be running fine - the same as before, to be honest.
I don't know whether the "Adware_MemWatcher" has been removed.

We have a couple more things to do, but once they're done I think your machine will be clean :)

Please delete dss.exe & daft.exe from your Desktop, also delete this folder:

C:\Deckard

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

------------------------------------------------------------------------

If the above went well I think your machine is now clean of malware :)

I'm not sure what the cause of the strange issue you have with viewing Temporary Internet Files. If you wish to pursue this, I recommend you post in the Browsers, Internet and email forum and the experts there are likely to be able to resolve it for you.
Here are some tips to help you keep your computer clean:

You have good protection software installed however please ensure it is kept up to date. Check that your antivirus and antispyware programs are set to automatically update themselves daily, and that your firewall is the latest version.

I recommend you install a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.
Also: subscribe to the mailing list to get update notifications.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins or ActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program. If you choose to use this you should disable Spybot's Tea Timer as they cover similar areas.

Please post back to let me know that you have read this, and if there are any further issues.

Hi,

I've followed your instructions and created the new System Restore point, but haven't, yet, been able to do anything else you suggested.

Although a re-scan by Trend Micro's HouseCall 6.6 indicates the problem that promted my initial posting appears to be still here, I don't think it's a problem any more, according to these sites:

ADWARE_MEMWATCHER, found in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts\127.0.0.1
http://forums.spybot...ead.php?t=21909
http://forums.comodo...r-t20820.0.html

The scan also revealed the following persistent cookie, which was also present at the first scan (although I didn't know it at the time as I didn't view the additional info that was available):

"revsci.net"

I tried to delete it (keeping the "ADWARE..." HouseCall thought was present), but HouseCall, once again, encountered a problem.

How do I get rid of it, even though it appears not to be causing any problems?

Hi Crimea,

We can clean the cookies on your machine but as soon as you go surfing again they will return. They should be blocked, and the method I advise is using the MVPS hosts file as per my previous post. Here are detailed instructions:

Stop and Disable the DNS Client Service
Go to Start, Run and type Services.msc and click OK.
Under the Extended Tab, Scroll down and find this service.

DNS Client

Right-Click on the DNS Client Service. Choose Properties
Select the General tab. Click on the Stop button.
Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side at the Start-up Type box.
From the drop-down menu, select Disabled
Click the Apply tab, then click OK

Download the MVPS hosts file to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
Right-click hosts.zip, select Extract All... and follow the prompts to unzip the file into a new folder on your Desktop
Then, double-click mvps.bat to install.
A blue box should appear, and report "THE MVPS HOSTS FILE IS NOW UPDATED"
Press any key to close the box, and you can then delete hosts.zip and the new folder hosts
Also, I recommend you subscribe to the mailing list to get hosts file update notifications.

Once you have installed it, then clean cookies as follows:

Open Internet Explorer, select Tools->Options
On the General tab, click the Delete... button which is under Browsing history
Then click the Delete Cookies button and confirm by pressing [b]Yes

Afterwards, re-scan with Housecall and see if the problems are resolved.

Hi,

I've re-scanned with HouseCall... and although there are a lot of false positives, the "revsci.net" cookie has gone, and everything else seems fine.

I'll ask for help for the other problem in the "Browsers..." forum.

Thanks for your help.
