Hi there,
I have a problem with my laptop running Vista with both IE7 & Firefox.
When entering certain .co.uk & .com web addresses, eg. www.woolwich.co.uk and ww.barclays.com (Both Bank websites) they get redirected to a Russina web page, but it's not a clone site and doesn't appear to be phising.
The address bar still says the UK or .COM address. Looking at the source view of the web page it appears to be yelagin.ru

I have run Highjack this and I can see a list of web sites, trying these, they appear to be the ones that are getting re-directed. So i'm assuming there is some malware in the start-up or registry. Spybot took out a couple of re-directing entries, but this problem still exists.

I have run kappersky and PREVIX CSI and PREVIX 2 Home, but they don't find anything.
Below is the Highjack this log file.

Can anyone advise what I need to delete or is it more terminal than a bad registry entry, are there other things I can't see?

Help much appreciate, I'm not accessing any online banks or completing any purchases wuth this computer until I get it cleaned.

Hi gforce2k,

Due to the fact that the hijacks are aimed at financial websites I recommend you change any online banking passwords from another, clean computer as a precaution.

Download HostsXpert to your Desktop
  • Unzip HostsXpert.zip to your Desktop (right-click, select Extract All... and follow the prompts)
  • Open the HostsXpert folder and double click on HostsXpert.exe
  • Click Backup/Restore->Create Backup to back up your existing hosts file
  • Then click on Restore Original Hosts and OK the prompt to restore your Hosts file to the default
  • Click on Make Hosts Read Only to secure it against changes
  • Close program when complete.
  • If for any reason you need to restore the old hosts file, you can do so by pressing Make Writeable?, then Backup/Restore->Restore Backup and OK to the prompt.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.

Hi Silver,

Thanks for your reply, just need to say that prior to receiving your reply I had opened HijackThis and from the report selected all the Host 82.146.60.44 items relating to bank web pages and selected Fix in the HijackThis options. Hope this hasn't had an effect on the cleaning process.
This did appear to stop the re-direction.

I have followed your instructions and ceated a back up of the hosts file, the only option I saw for "Restore Original" was to "Restore MS Host file" which I did.

I ran the DSS file and the results follow. please let me know if there could be anything else that could be a highjack or trojan trying to get information of my PC. I was wondering about the

Hi gforce2k,

Yes, cleaning those hosts entries with HijackThis is fine, and "Restore MS Host file" was the correct button to press ::)

The DSS report shows your Kaspersky antivirus program as disabled. If you temporarily disabled it for the scan that's fine, but in any case please re-enable it immediately, because without antivirus protection your computer is at great risk of infection. If you have any difficulties with this please let me know.

Please open Start->Control Panel->Uninstall a program/Programs and Features, and remove the following:

JavaT 6 Update 3
JavaT 6 Update 5
JavaT SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

These are out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (version 6 update 6) from here

You have BitComet, a P2P file sharing program installed on your computer. This program does not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but peer-to-peer file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I recommend you remove it, but of course the choice is yours.
You can remove BitComet via Programs and Features.

We will clean those two orphaned entries but we'll need to temporarily disable some security software otherwise it might interfere:

Temporarily disable Windows Defender:
  • Open Start->All Programs->Windows Defender
  • Click on Tools from the top menu, then press Options
  • Scroll down to Real-time protection options, uncheck Use real-time protection and press Save
  • Close Windows Defender

Temporarily disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Right-click the HijackThis program or shortcut, and choose Run as administrator to start the program
Choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Scan with ESET online scanner:
  • Open Internet Explorer by right-clicking the IE icon (on the Start menu or quick launch) and selecting Run as administrator
  • NOTE: Internet Explorer will temporarily have administrator privileges, this is required for the scan but dangerous for normal surfing so do NOT open any other websites in IE until after the scan has finished and this window has been closed.
  • Open the ESET Online Scanner in Internet Explorer
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use. and click Start
  • Allow the ActiveX control to be installed by Internet Explorer
  • Once the ActiveX has finished loading click Start to initialize and update the scanner
  • When the Computer scan screen appears, leave Remove found threats UN-checked, but check the box next to Scan unwanted applications. Then click Scan to begin the scan.
  • Once complete and the summary page appears, press Start, copy/paste the following command into the search box and press Enter:

    notepad "C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt"

  • The log file should now appear in Notepad, copy and paste the contents in your next response.
  • Please be sure to close this Internet Explorer window before continuing.

Once complete, please post the Eset report and a new HijackThis log.

Hi Silver,
Yes Kapersky is installed and normally running, just shut it down to speed up the scans. I'm normally quite carefull with Bitcomet and don't use it much, something musty have slipped through while someone else in the family was using the laptop.

I have removed the Java files, removed the orphaned files, completed the online scan and run HighJackthis again. The online scanner found 4 threats, how are these removed?
The log files follow.

I assume I need to reset Windows Defender and Spybot's Tea Timer.

Thanks again.

Hi gforce2k,

We'll remove the detected files as follows:

Please download OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to start the program.
  • Copy the lines in the OTMoveIt file list below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
    OTMoveIt File List:
    C:\Users\Graham\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Defender\FileTracker\{3C3BFCEB-F42D-4EDF-AF48-B87B097C2003}
    C:\Users\Graham\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Defender\FileTracker\{4A173DE1-C947-42CC-98F5-9ADA87D0BB21}
    C:\Users\Graham\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Defender\FileTracker\{C39AD871-66A2-4C97-A445-BC55801A2105}
    C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts.msn
    EmptyTemp
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Then click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of it and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • If OTMoveIt asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report will appear in Notepad after the reboot.
  • Close OTMoveIt2

Once complete, please post the OTMoveIt report along with a new HijackThis log and let me know how your computer is running.

Hi again,
I think I jumped the gun and re-activated Windows Defender and Spybot before doing the file move.
There were error messages and Spybot was requesting authorisation to change the registry.
The system went intp reboot but during boot up there was a failure and it did a data dump and rebooted on it's own a second time, it then asked how I wanted to boot windows, I selected standard boot up. After boot up there was the typical "Windows has recovered from a unespected failure. There was a failure in Kapersky.
Here is the report file from the first attempt.

C:\Users\Graham\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Defender\FileTracker\{3C3BFCEB-F42D-4EDF-AF48-B87B097C2003} moved successfully.

Hi gforce2k,

Re-enabling Tea Timer and allowing the changes to be reversed has brought back some entries we wanted to remove, we need to disable the programs and remove them again. When you re-enable Tea Timer after we have finished, if it pops up warnings about changes, you should Allow the change we have made, so they become permanent. Otherwise things look good and I think we're nearly done :)

Temporarily disable Windows Defender:
  • Right-click on the Windows Defender icon in the system tray and select Open

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Once complete, please post a new HijackThis log and let me know if you had any difficulties with the instructions.

Hi again,
No problem following instructions.
Have run highjackthis and fixed those two lines, report follows.

just one small item appeared when I rebooted a second time Spybot gave a message for the removal of kdx C:\Program Files\Kontiki\KHost.exe -all from the start up entries. I know this is used for Sky, BBc and C4 download players so I stopped the removal but I know see there are three entries for this item. Should I have allowed it's removal?

Once again thanks for all your help

Hi gforce2k,

Spybot gave a message for the removal of kdx C:\Program Files\Kontiki\KHost.exe -all from the start up entries. I know this is used for Sky, BBc and C4 download players so I stopped the removal but I know see there are three entries for this item. Should I have allowed it's removal?

I haven't given any instructions regarding that program so I can't say what caused the startup entry to try and be removed. However, it might be the case that the program settings have been changed to disable automatic startup - is this possible?

Clean up with OTMoveIt2:
  • Right-click on OTMoveIt2.exe and select Run As Administrator to start the program.
  • Close all other programs apart from OTMoveIt2 as this step will require a reboot
  • On the OTMoveIt main screen, press the CleanUp! button
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
  • Press Start, then right-click Computer, select Properties then click System Protection
  • Next to You can create a Restore Point right now... click Create...
  • Type a name for the Restore Point like All Clean and press OK
  • Once the Restore Point has been created, press OK, OK and close the System dialog box.

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
  • Next click Start, type cleanmgr in the search box and press Enter
  • Select Files from all users on this computer
  • Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
  • Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and confirm by pressing Delete
  • Then press OK and Delete Files to confirm

Re-enable Windows Defender real-time protection:
  • Open Start->All Programs->Windows Defender
  • Click on Tools from the top menu, then press Options
  • Scroll down to Real-time protection options, check Use real-time protection and press Save
  • Close Windows Defender

Once complete, please let me know if you had any difficulties with the instructions and tell me how your computer is running now.

Silver, All process completed without a problem and the computer boots up fine, faster than before. The previous attempt to remove the startup item may have been from Registry Booster that I had run to see what registry item it reported as an error. May I thank you for all your time and effort, you done a great job for me. Thanks again Gforce2K

You're most welcome :)

At this stage I think your machine is clean of malware, here are some tips to help you keep it that way:

You have the Windows Vista Firewall running which provides only inbound protection by default. Inbound protection is crucial, but outbound protection is very important also as it can prevent malware from accessing the internet and also allows you to choose which legitimate applications have access. Configuring the Windows Vista Firewall to provide good outbound protection can be difficult, so you may wish to consider installing a 3rd party program. There are various free packages available, one I can recommend is Comodo:
http://www.personalf...all.comodo.com/
A tutorial on firewalls to help you get started:
http://www.bleepingc...tutorial60.html

I recommend you install a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.
Also: subscribe to the mailing list to get update notifications.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins or ActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

Please post back to let me know that you have read this, and if there are any further issues.
