I do have some weird looking non P&P devices in my Device Manager.

Anyone got a clue what the hell they are?

I also have there other suspicious drivers that does not support P&P, and their names are:

ATICDSDr
atidgllk
Beep - used, could this be removed for good somehow?
BOPOMAV
c34nb4c5
DirectX DLL register
e259q4c6
Fs_Rec
rvbedit (I killed this one already)
SSDefrag (I killed this one already)
NetGroup Packet Filter Driver
Parallel - used, could this be removed for good somehow?
YQZBNWOGRK (I killed this one already)

Can I remove/uninstall few of them?

Hey Trodas

Hmm, good news and perhaps bad news…. :unsure:

DirectX DLL register:

Microsoft DirectX DLL Register. its prime and only role is to register with Windows the DLLs that are part of Microsoft DirectX v9.
If you have no trouble with this entry, leave it be as it does no harm. Dunno if deleting it will tho.

ATICDSDr:

ATI Graphic Accelerator driver. Shouldn't be deleted if you are running ATI graphic.

atidgllk:

Driver for Overclocking tool. You overclocking?

Fs_Rec:

Stands for: File System recognizer. Shouldn't be deleted to my knowledge……

NetGroup Packet Filter Driver:

Part of windows networking. But can also be possible malware.

c34nb4c5 / e259q4c6:

Those two entries are simply to obscure…..It might point to the presence of malware. They are unknown to me.

Beep and parallel:

Beats me, very obscure too.

But how is your machine running? Any particular reason to delete those entries if your machine is running good enough?
You could consider placing a HJT-log in the HJT-forum. Those obscure entries are simply to mystic to be any good. I couldn't find a single useful piece of info anywhere. They may or may not be harmful, but least then you will know.

Regards Abydos
Well, fist at all, to see all these devices, you have to use the registry tweak:

REGEDIT4

;show all the devices in the hardware table
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment]
"DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES"=dword:00000001

And then reboot + choose in the menu again show all devices. Then you can see these.

And true, I had a mallware infection when I was running IE. Not anymore, but some stuff can remain there.

ATICDSDr - removed, no ill effects
atidgllk - removed, no ill effects (I do overclock, but I have nVidia card (ATI mobo chipset tough) and mobo I overclock in bios)

Beep - used, could this be removed for good somehow? Is not that the "beep" speaker anyway?

BOPOMAV - removed, no ill effects
c34nb4c5 - removed, no ill effects (probably related to PunkBuster)
e259q4c6 - removed, no ill effects (probably related to PunkBuster)

Fs_Rec - removed, but it keep comming back (should be File System recognizer)

NetGroup Packet Filter Driver - part of WinPcap - installed for Etheral sniffer, removed

Parallel - removed, but it keep comming back (parallel port disabled in bios)

YQZBNWOGRK - removed, no ill effects

Machine is running fine, except few things. First at all, I cannot delete this registry error:
http://forums.whatthetech.com/Cannot_delet…try_t90950.html
Second, Firefox v3 beta5 cannot stay as default browser. Again and again I set it, just to end it and have the very same issue again. It is driving me crazy already.
And since the mallware infection, my CDROM is not recognized anymore, but I did not have much time to reinstall, so it stay like that. I cause this by myself, by removing some weird looking devices and they turned out to be necessary :)
o, anyone know, how to get rid of these for good? Beep - removed, but it keep comming back (I did not want beeper at all!) Fs_Rec- removed, but it keep comming back (is this really necessary? unused all the time!) Parallel - removed, but it keep comming back (parallel/serial ports disabled in bios) Recently I noticed this: ALSysIO - coretemp driver, removed Also I wonder about those: dmboot dmload Diskperf (all disk performace things are disabled already?) driver IPSEC (IPSEC disabled in serices already?) Fips KSecDD partmgr ParVdm VgaSave - VGA driver for emergency situations, removed yet comming back… I try disable it in Autoruns and uninstall there and we see :)
Hi Trodas,

It's not entirely clear what your purpose or goal is in attempting to remove these obscure items.
Of more specific concern is that you have experienced some machine dysfunction (CD/DVD unit) as a result of your own initiative to remove items in previous activity.

Windows OS and Registry is filled with thousands of obscure items that are nevertheless required for proper functioning.
Some of these obscure items are just sitting around un-used unless the owner/user happens to install an application that requires them. Removing such items can be accomplished without harm to the machine's function…….. unless and until the owner/user has occasion to install/use a related application. Then it can be a nightmare to trouble-shoot what may be preventing proper function. You'd have to posses the Wisdom of Solomon and the Memory of an Elephant to keep track of all the items that "could" be removed and keep track of specific instances where they might be necessary for future function.

As a result of the above, it is often better to consider: "If it ain't broke, don't be fixing on it."

There are several well known and respected "guides" for disabling "services" which may be useful to you
http://www.tech-recipes.com/windows_tips1036.html
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm
http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm

You probably are already aware of those posted links, but it would be well to read the various "cautions" that the authors post.
I realize your question states "devices" and not "services", but again, I am not clear on what your objective is, so I'm asking?

I have browsed to your " home forum" and browsed your "gallery".
What nationality or language does your home forum serve?

You have an impressive variety of main rigs, server rigs, testing rigs.
It is no surprise that you venture into the "obscure".

Still it could help, if you stated what your overall goal is in this thread.

Specifically regarding your DVD/CD unit…. consider modifying the Registry with regard to "filters", as laid out below:

uninstall the DVD-Drive and then have you reboot and let windows reinstall the drivers for it. To do this, do the following:

  • Go to START–>RUN and type devmgmt.msc
  • In the new window that appears, click the + symbol next to CD/DVD-ROM Drives.
  • Locate the drive in question and right-click it and choose UNINSTALL.
  • Once it's finishing uninstalling, reboot your computer.
Once it's rebooted, try putting a DVD in it again and see if the same thing happens.

—————————-

If after rebooting you are still having problems, try the following:

Click Start then Run and type regedit…click "Ok"
Make a BackUp of your Registry or of the specific items, before continuing.

In the left pane, expand (click +) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then SYSTEM, then CurrentControlSet, then Control, then Class, and click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Right click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and choose Export. Name this file "filters" and save it to your desktop. This file can be deleted when it is determined it is no longer needed.

In the right pane, if either UpperFilters or LowerFilters are present, right click on it and choose Delete…accept the deletion. Delete both if they are both present.

Close Registry Editor and reboot.

—————————-

If after doing that your drive still doesn't show up, please download CDGone from HERE. Once it's downloaded, extract the files to your desktop and open the READ ME FIRST.TXT file and follow the instructions there.

Post back with how things are going after doing the above.

Doug - it is not clear? Well, to optimize. Why have in your system drivers that are not used? No reason at all. My board from start for example does not even have any serial/parallel ports. Yet Winblows insist on installing them, so I insist on removing them :thumbup:

And I'm sucesfull. To stop these annoying devices comming back, I figured out a little trick. First uncheck these devices in the Autoruns utility from SysInternals and then uninstall these into the device manager. Works like charm. Serial, Parallel and Beep (yes, I do have the beeper on my mainboard, but I did not want to hear it at all) are removed, gone - and not comming back :thumbup:

Windows OS and Registry is filled with thousands of obscure items that are nevertheless required for proper functioning.

This statement is sadly very true, however these that break the functionality are no longer obscure and all what is necessary is ours better understanding them. Labeling them as "obscure" does not solve a dayam thing. Perhaps it discourage people from investigating them, but that it not good ide either :)

And since I did not and not planing to use Serial, Parallel and Beep - I can kill them with fire w/o looking back. Of course I do have a DriveImage backup :blush:

I am not clear on what your objective is, so I'm asking?

To remove things I did not like to see :) Could it be any less unclean? :)
Example of thing I did not like to see - DiskPerf non-PNP driver in my system. DiskPerformance is all about checking and loging how my drive perform. Last thing I want. Slow things down, entierly unnecessary. I did do some tweak like that before:

;stop unnecessary NTFS features to speed up disk IO
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem]
"NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate"=dword:00000001
"Win95TruncatedExtensions"=dword:00000000
"Win31FileSystem"=dword:00000000
"NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation"=dword:00000001

;stop unnecessary checkings for remaining space on HDD
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoLowDiskSpaceChecks"=dword:00000001

And stopped all the Performance Counters using exctrlst.exe … but this suxxka is still there, so looks like my next try will be uncheck the Diskperf in Autoruns and uninstall it there… :P

BTW, a good example of obscure item is a SCSI Floppy disk driver :lol: Pardon me, but I somewhat feel that this is not what I should need to run in my machine :)

Thanks a lot for the CDROM restoring efforts. I tried some, but no sucess and I ended up with not booting Windows, so I finally made a reinstall - hoooray :) Now, despite how many optimalizations and modifications I made, things working well. I remember not to remove these drivers anymore B)

Ztruker - interesting idea, I use that for PunkBuster services and stuff.. but the Beep did not have a service - at least not visible on Win2k SP4… :) But I figured out other way that is better and permanet B)
I think you're spitting into the wind so to speak :lol: All these things you are removing because you don't like seeing them makes absolutely no difference in the way your system performs or the resources it has available. Since there is no hardware to use these drivers, they are not loaded and therefore do not consume any system resources. This is simply a feel good process on your part, but hey, if it makes you happy, go for it :thumbup:
Interesting note - disabling Diskperf cause BSOD as "inacessible boot device" during booting, lol. Maybe a reason why in XP this Diskperf is not even visible/possible to tweak using Autoruns :blush:

Ztruker - well, it sounds logical, that as long, as these devices are not used, they are not loaded. But in the device managers are active devices with normal color and not active right now ghosted. Since all these devices are active, their drivers are loaded and hence consume a bit of CPU time as well, as memory.
Probably a very tiny fragment out of it, but this still is important to me. As well, as reducing the boottime :P
(by a very tiny amount, of course)

Regardless, it is fun.

Now do you have any idea, what the hell is "Support for AFD network enviroment" driver good for? It is translation from the Czech localization, but anyway… There is also many Creative drivers installed for my X-Fi and I doubt that all are necessary. Just look at them:

Creative 20X HAL Driver (well, this looks necessary :-) )
Creative AC3 Software Decoder (why when I use AC3 filter as decoder?!)
Creative OS Serviced Driver (not sure about this one, but probably need to keep DirectX working, I think…)
Creative Proxy Driver (What the hell if this?!)
Creatiove SoundFont Management Device Driver (no idea, perhaps a MIDI stuff I not use or what…?)
E-mu Plug-in Architecture Driver (this one look necessary, tough…)

There is plenty to play with! :P
