[DannyBoy]

My virus scanner has detected som adware, ive put it in virus vault, i think this has stopped me being able to open windows media player, Also i cannot read my emails in hotmail!

Hi

Sorry for the delay. If you still require assistance please remove the old copy of HijackThis that you have and follow these instructions.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

• Close all applications and windows.
• Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
• If asked to install HijackThis click on Yes
• When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
• Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your next reply

Hi

Could you make a note of the files in your Virus vault and post them here. Then run this.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

• The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
• Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
• Now click on Scan Settings
• In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
  
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    
    + Extended(If available otherwise Standard)
  • Scan Options:
    
    + Scan Archives
    + Scan Mail Bases
• Click OK
• Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
• The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
• Now click on the Save as Text button
• Save the file to your desktop.
• Copy and paste that information in your next post.

With the exception of Internet Explorer, which is needed for the Kaspersky Scan, keep ALL programs closed until the scan is complete. This includes your anti-virus. Once you have installed the Scanner, and the updated definitions, you can disconnect from the Internet.Re-enable the anti-virus before reconnecting to the Internet.

I am unable to use the online scanner when i click the link to start scan nothing happens, this happens on many sites som links dont work for eg. i cannot use the delete buttton in hotmail, i tried to download real player but i was unable to because the button did not work, i cannot send messages in facebook, and myspace doesnt work properly either, also my flash player is not working. and when i try access my emails from msn messenger it doesnt work i have to type hotmail.com in IE.

This is a strange one.

• Download GMER by GMER from here
• Unzip it to a folder on your desktop
• Double click on gmer.exe to launch GMER
• If asked, allow the gmer.sys driver load
• If it warns you about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan, click OK
• If you don't get a warning then
  
  • Click the rootkit tab
  • Click Scan
• Once the scan has finished, click copy
• Paste the log into notepad using Ctrl+V
• Save it to your desktop as gmerrk.txt
• Click on the >>> tab
• This will open up the rest of the tabs for you
• Click on the Autostart tab
• Click on Scan
• Once the scan has finished, click copy
• Paste the log into notepad using Ctrl+V
• Save it to your desktop as gmerautos.txt
• Copy and paste the contents of gmerautos.txt and gmerrk.txt as a reply to this topic

• Please download F-Secure Blacklight (fsbl.exe) from here
• Save into C:\ with a name of fsbl.exe
• Go to Start > Run
• Copy and paste the contents of the below codebox into the run box
  

  C:\fsbl.exe /expert

• Click OK
• This will launch BlackLight
• Select I accept the agreement
• Click Next
• Click Scan
• Wait for the scan to finish
• Click on Next>
• Click Exit
• A logfile will have been created in the C:\ drive
• It will be named fsbl-xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.log where xxxxxxxxxxxxxx is the date and time of the scan
• Use notepad to open that log
• Post the contents of that log as a reply to this topic together with a new HijackThis log.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

• Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
• At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
• The log can also be found here:
  C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
• Post that log back here and tell me how the computer is running.

All logs have come back clean. There is no malware on your computer, and if it was as heavily infected with all in that list, your computer would be struggling to run.
By chance were watching the scanner in action? A few list the infections they are looking for as opposed to actually detecting them. or possibly it found false positives. Isnt AVG 8 still in beta form?

As for the media player problem, I would start a post here.

You can now delete DSS,fsbl.exe and GMER from your Desktop. You also need to delete this folder-->C:\Deckard


You may wish to keep hold of the Kaspersky Online Scan as an extra on-demand virus-scanner.
If not you can uninstall it through Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs


Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a good program to keep. If you wish to keep it, use it to do a quick scan once a week and keep it updated.
Remember, only the paid for version offers real-time protection
