Hello, it seems that I've accidentally gotten a keylogger on my computer from browsing some forums. I seem to have gotten it about 2 or 3 days ago, and I've ran Ad-aware, Spybot S&D, Avast!, and Trendmicro's virus scanner in attempts to remove it. I want to be sure that it's gone, so I turn to you for help.

This is my Hijackthis list

Hi Origami,

How did you know you had a keylogger on board - did your security software give a warning? Did it remove the infected files successfully?
If you know what date this problem started please tell me.

First, move HijackThis from the desktop to it's own folder:
Open My Computer, navigate to C:\ and make a new folder named HJT
Move the HijackThis.exe program file from your desktop to C:\HJT
If you wish to place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop, then right-click hijackthis.exe, select Send To and choose Desktop (create shortcut)

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following line:
O16 - DPF: {15589FA1-C456-11CE-BF01-00AA0055595A} - http://w4s2.work4sure.com/c/ge/w4sgeen9.exe
Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply
Once complete, please post both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.

I was surfing the wow website without any real regards as to what I was clicking, and clicked on a link that was warcraftSmovies instead of warcraftmovies. Another poster pointed out that was the new trick of the keyloggers and I didn't spot it in time. @_@ stupid mistake. Another poster did a check on it and it was indeed a redirect page that sent a little keylogger onto your computer. Thank you again for your time in check this out.

Hi Origami,

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, look down the list for these items and remove them:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
JavaT 6 Update 2
JavaT SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

These are out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (version 6 update 5) from here

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Media Player.
To remove, uninstall these via Add/Remove Programs:

Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only)
Viewpoint Media Player

You have BitTorrent and LimeWire, P2P file sharing programs installed on your computer. These programs do not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but peer-to-peer file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I recommend you remove them, but of course the choice is yours.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT:
  • Download erunt.zip to your Desktop from here:
    http://aumha.org/downloads/erunt.zip
  • Right-click erunt.zip, select Extract All... and follow the prompts to extract ERUNT to a new folder on your Desktop
  • Inside the new folder, double-click ERUNT.exe to start the program
  • OK all the prompts to back up your registry to the default location.
Note: if it is necessary to restore the registry, open the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

Then, open Notepad (press Start->Run, enter notepad and press OK)
Copy everything inside the code box below (Starting with REGEDIT4) and paste it into a new notepad file.
Note: Please copy and paste all the text at once, and check that there is NO blank line above REGEDIT4 and one blank line at the bottom.
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"csrss"=-
Change the Save As Type to All Files and save it as fix.reg to your Desktop.
Locate fix.reg on your Desktop, if you did it right it should look like this:Posted Image
Double-click it, when it asks if you want to merge with the registry, click Yes.
You can then delete fix.reg

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next, please do an online scan with Kaspersky:
Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer using this link:
http://www.kaspersky...kavwebscan.html
  • Click Accept and the web scanner will begin to load
  • If a yellow warning bar appears at the top of the browser, click it and choose Install ActiveX Control
  • You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Install
  • If you are prompted about another ActiveX control called Kaspersky Online Scanner GUI part then allow it to be installed also.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on Next and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save Report As... button, change Save as type: to Text file and save the file to your desktop as Kaspersky.txt
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.

Hi Origami,

That all looks pretty good, we just have some tidying up to do:

Please delete dss.exe from your Desktop, also delete this folder:

C:\Deckard

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

At this stage I think your machine is clean of malware :) here are some tips to help you keep it that way:

You have a good antivirus program installed, however I recommend you install antispyware software with real-time capabilities - this means it protects you from system changes and spyware while you are working, not just removing malware after it has been installed. There are a range of paid-for and free packages available, a free one I can recommend is Windows Defender, available here:
http://www.microsoft...re/default.mspx

I recommend you consider installing a Personal Firewall program. Even if you are behind a NAT router, I recommend you use firewall software as it will improve the security of your computer by monitoring and controlling outbound connections to the internet as well as inbound. There are various free packages available, one I can recommend is Comodo:

I recommend you install a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins or ActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

Awesome, I've taken your post to heart, as I don't want my computer infected again. My only questions is with this line from Kaspersky C:\System Volume Information\_restore{4748393C-ADB8-4028-8E97-AA9D16185486}\RP88\A0032903.exe Infected: not-a-virus:Downloader.Win32.WinFixer.fs skipped Shouldn't I be a bit worried about that? or because of the cleaning that I just did I shouldn't have to worry about that restore point? Anyhoo, once again, thank you for you time, and thank you for putting my mind at ease. :) Hopefully I won't be back for a while.

Hi Origami, You're most welcome :) That Kaspersky detection was part of an old restore point, and if the instructions from my previous post went OK then it should have been cleaned. You can repeat the System Restore instructions if you aren't sure. I don't think there is any need to be concerned but if you want to double-check the removal, you can re-scan with Kaspersky and post the results.
