hi, my acer laptop seems to have lots of infections that reapear after every reboot. after reading some of the posts i realised i had no windows updates installed in my fresh xp installaction and after the updates the infections don't seem to be affecting the laptop as bad but there still is the accasional pop-up/slow down that occured before the updates. there is a program that seems to pop-up directly after i boot into windows that is antispywaremaster.

i have windows xp pro sp2 installed.
after running avg anti virus the vault contains the viruses/malware below (i ran hijackthis before i did the scan and directly after a reboot).:
purityscan.y , vundu, downloader.agent.15.A, BHO.DJQ, generic10.IWM

A. You don't appear to be running any anti-virus software

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, clean, and/or erase harmful virus files on a computer. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, and thereby spread infection. Keeping your anti-virus updated is essential.

Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors NOW:

• Antivir PersonalEdition Classic .
• AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts.


B. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

C. Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.

• Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application. (If using Windows Vista, be sure to "Run As Administrator")
• When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
• When installation has finished, make sure you leave both these checked:
  • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
• Then click Finish.
• MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
• On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Acan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
• The next screen will ask you to select the drives to scan. Leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
• The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
• When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
• Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
• Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
• Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
• The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
• Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log and exit MBAM.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process and, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

i have got a virus checker already present which is AVG free, do you advise to stick with that in the future or are there better free alternatives?
well the logs for both pieces of software are below. also i have changed my version of hijackthis from 1.99 (used for fist scan) to 2.0.0.2 used for the second scan posted below. hope this will not cause inconsistencies in scan results.....

A. Sorry about the Antivirus, I actually only saw the AVG AS program.


B. Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:

• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u5.
• Scroll down to where it says "The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
• In the pull down menu next to Platform select Windows
• Check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement"
• Click Continue
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
• Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
• Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
• Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u5-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Now to Clean out the Java cache:

Go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.

• Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
• There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 Checked
  
  • Downloaded Applets
    Downloaded Applications
    Other Files
• Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
  Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
• Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

C. We will have to disable one of your security programs for it may interfere with out tools:

AVG ANTI-SPYWARE

• Launch AVG Anti-Spyware.
• From the "Status" menu, select "Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Shield' and 'Automatic Updates'.
• Then right click on AVG Anti-Spyware in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows".

• Please RUN HijackThis.

hi. i have posted the results of the 2 scans below. just a quick question about internet explorer, would it be better to install a different browser such as firefox to prevent this happeneing in the future? i read somewhere as i was researching these viruses that IE has alot more vulnerbilites than some other browsers?

Most people in my line of work will recommend Firefox over IE as it is generally considered to be a more secure browser but nothing replaces safe surfing habits.

just done a avg scan and it has found 4 change events listed in result/infection column. the folder they belong to are in c:\windows\system32\ the files changed are user32.dll, kernel32.dll, shell32.dll and ntoskrnl.exe. other than that no threats have been found. is this anything to worry about? if not then i'm ok to do the final stage.

Here is a step you must take do once your system is clean:

Set a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:

• Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
• Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
• Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
• Click "OK".
• Click the "More Options" Tab.
• Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

1. Make your Internet Explorer More Secure

• From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
• Click once on the Security tab.
• Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
• Click once on the Custom Level button.
  
  
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt.
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable.
  • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable.
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt.
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt.
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt.
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
• Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

2. Update your Anti-Virus Software - I can not overemphasize the need for you to update your Anti-virus application on a regular basis. With the ever increasing number of new variants of malware arriving on the scene daily, you become very susceptible to an attack without updated protection.

3. Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. Without these you are leaving the back door open.

4. Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.

Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

5. Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

6. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Download and install Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide real time spyware and hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would with your anti-virus software. A tutorial on installing and using this product can be found here:

thanks alot for all your help recently. hopefully thats all those pesky infections gone forever. i've just installed firefox and am looking to beef up security abit more. think i'll stick with avg anti-virus and anti-spyware. i checked some of the tutorials from your last post and afew programs i looked into where zonealarm, mvpshosts, spybot search and destroy, winpatrol? to install all of those ontop seems abit like overkill to me. any advice on which i should go for?

1. You should have a software firewall even if you are behind a router.

2. An expanded Hosts file is a MUST

3. You could add MalwareBytes to the list. They all have their pros and cons. You can have them all on your machine as long as you only have one Guard/Shield in memory at any given time. Just for information, AVG AS is not quite what it used to be. They have put a lot of its old functionality into their Suite.
