Hello,
Many thanks for this wonderful service!
At startup I receive error messages from tavo.exe, ff.exe, and cc.exe. My PC is very slow.
My system is Windows XP and I use Firefox. The Norton subscription that came with my computer has expired but it is still installed on my computer. Also, I noticed in another thread that someone recommended removing Viewpoint from a computer. I do historical research and many archives use Viewpoint as the image viewer on their websites, so I need to have this program.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.


Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.


Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

• Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
• At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.

Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Below is my Malwarebyte log and my new Hijackthis log.
When I clicked Remove Selected in Malwarebyte, it removed the listed items and gave me a message saying that the following two items could not be removed and asked me to reboot:

When my computer came back on, I did not receive the tavo.exe error messages. But I'm assuming it can't have been that simple!
As for how my computer is behaving, overall it is draggy and slow and seems to be often processing things for a long time (making the sounds of processing). Programs such as imaging programs are the slowest. My access to the Internet does not seem to be effected. On a couple of occasions I have received messages about a lack of available memory. Also, normally I receive a message on my screen notifying me when my internal network card has been activated/deactivated (usually when I plug/unplug my computer), but over the past few days, the pinkish shape that this message appears in has remained stuck on my screen and only disappears when I reboot. Very annoying.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, please delete it from your desktop and download this new version . It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

CFScript.txt is the txt file you told me to create from the code you posted. Maybe you mean Combofix.txt? which I did find in C:\

As for my computer's behaviour, it seems okay; still making a lot of processing sounds, and taking its time with imaging software, but this may be a legitimate response to low memory. I don't know enough about this to assess it properly. The problem with the internal network card notification thing seems to be resolved. And I no longer receive the tavo.exe warnings at startup.

  Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
  Check "Hide protected operating system files."

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
• Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
  (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  
  
• Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
  Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

To completely uninstall Symantec AntiVirus?
Problem: The solution to many problems with Symantec AntiVirus is to completely uninstall Symantec AntiVirus, then re-install. You can use these instructions to completely uninstall Symantec AntiVirus.

Solution: In order to completely uninstall Symantec AntiVirus and all related components you need to follow these instructions.
Note: This procedure will remove all Symantec products, not just Symantec AntiVirus.

1.Click on Start | Settings | Control Panel
2.In the control panel double-click on Add / Remove Programs
3.Look through the list of installed programs for any item that says either "Norton" or "Symantec" or "LiveUpdate". (for example "Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition" or "Norton AntiVirus 2000")
4.For each "Norton", "Symantec", or "LiveUpdate" item, select the item and click Add / Remove. Follow the instructions, and click Yes or Yes to all when prompted.
When you are done there should be no items in the list that say "Norton", "Symantec", or "LiveUpdate".
5.Click OK to close the Add / Remove Programs window.
6.Reboot your computer if it hasn't already automatically rebooted.
7.Delete the c:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus (or c:\Program Files\Norton) folder.
8.Delete the c:\Program Files\Symantec folder.
9.Delete the c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared folder.
