Hi Tippaporn,

Please open this page in your browser:
http://www.bleepingc....php?channel=32

Please fill in the link to topic field with a link to this topic
Copy/paste the following into the Browse to the file you want to submit field:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\DNHlp32.exe

Then press Send File, this will upload the file for analysis

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.

Hi (ho) Silver (sorry, couldn't resist),

Following are both DSS logs. The file I uploaded to Bleeping Computer was successful.

Just a bit of info on the DNHlp32.exe file - I was earlier suspicious of this file and Googled info on it. While most sites claimed it was a malicious and unnecessary file and recommended deleting it mention was also made that it might well be valid, too. I deleted it but then could not activate streaming video. So I rolled back to a previous system restore point to regain the file. If it is malicious in all cases then I asked myself why anti-malware software did not pick it up during scans. Do you know?

Thanks, Silver.

Pete

BTW, not sure of your location but I'm out in Bangkok, Thailand so you're aware of the time difference. - - - Oh, I just checked and seems you're in my part of the world. Are you located near Bangkok, also? If so stop on by and we'll fix this little problem with the help of a few LEOs (Chang, if you prefer). :P

Hi Tippaporn,

I'm in your part of the world but not close enough to take you up on the Leo/Chang offer, thanks anyway :)

Re DNHlp32.exe:
This file appears to be legitimate software, however there are reports of a trojan with the same name and registry entry. Having said that, it looks like it is DRM dongle software, perhaps to protect the streaming video you mentioned. As you may already know, this type of software exists to prevent users accessing certain data except in the ways the publisher allows, and generally does not have a reputation for enhancing system stability. It sounds like it's something you use regularly, however if you do not require it now or in the future I recommend you remove it. The best way to remove this is via Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs - the relevant entry is DK2 Drivers v 6.21.0.169

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, look down the list for JavaT 6 Update 3 - this is outdated and now a security risk, you already have the latest version installed (Java™ 6 Update 5) - don't remove that one :)

It looks like Google Toolbar might be causing the browser problems:

Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 7.0.6000.16608, faulting module googletoolbar2.dll

To confirm this I recommend you temporarily uninstall Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer via Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs

Download Flash_Disinfector from here and save it to your desktop.
Doubleclick on Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
You will be prompted to plug in your flash drive(s) - please do so
When the program is finished a message box will appear - click OK and your desktop should now appear.
If it doesn't, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, type in explorer.exe and press Enter - your desktop should now appear.

Then please do an online scan with Kaspersky:
Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer using this link:
http://www.kaspersky...kavwebscan.html
  • Click Accept and the web scanner will begin to load
  • If a yellow warning bar appears at the top of the browser, click it and choose Install ActiveX Control
  • You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Install
  • If you are prompted about another ActiveX control called Kaspersky Online Scanner GUI part then allow it to be installed also.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on Next and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save Report As... button, change Save as type: to Text file and save the file to your desktop as Kaspersky.txt
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.

Hi Silver,

Following is the Kaspersky report. I cannot produce a new HJT log. Seems the alleged baddies stem from an Incredimail.exe installation file which I have saved but have never installed and a ComboFix.exe file which I had downloaded and run over a year ago following instructions from another anti-spyware forum. At that time I could not produce HJT logs. HJT would lock up whenever I attempted to scan. After very lengthy attempts the problem was never resolved.

Since that time I had wiped my system clean (C:\ drive only). Is it coincidental that HJT is locking up again? This is the first instance where HJT once again locks up. I hope it's not the same issue this time!!

I do not want to sacrifice streaming video so I did not uninstall DK2 Drivers v 6.21.0.169.

Thanks,

Pete

Note: I thought that since DSS produced an HJT log it might be able to do so now - and it was successful, although it had to run a clone (?). So far it's beyond my understanding as to why DSS could accomplish an HJT log whereas it locks up when I do so. I tried to run HJT again after running DSS and it still locks up.

In any case, I attached the HJT log and also the new DSS log in case it's helpful. One notable difference is that the "extra" text file was not produced this time around. Meaningful?

Hi Tippaporn,

By default DSS produces a shorter report and no extra.txt the second time it's run, so what you found was normal. If DSS can find HijackThis on the computer, it uses that to create a log, if it can't find it, it knows how to make one itself without using HijackThis - so it is a 'clone' program.

I'm not sure I completely understand the HijackThis problem yet. It's is locking up when you try to run it, but your post appears to contain a HijackThis log which was created at around the same time as the DSS log - does HijackThis produce a log and then lock up? If you can tell me anything further about this it would be helpful.

Google Toolbar appears to still be present, have you tried uninstalling this yet?

I don't think Incredimail or ComboFix are the cause of the problems here, but I recommend you delete the Incredimail program and you definitely should delete ComboFix - ComboFix is updated very often and old versions are not useful and are possibly unsafe.

D:\~Local Disk H\~All New Files\~C Drive\Incredimail\incredimail_install.exe
E:\~C Drive\~Program Installation Files\Computer Maintenance and Utilities\ComboFix\combofix.exe

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT:
  • Download erunt.zip to your Desktop from here:
    http://aumha.org/downloads/erunt.zip
  • Right-click erunt.zip, select Extract All... and follow the prompts to extract ERUNT to a new folder on your Desktop
  • Inside the new folder, double-click ERUNT.exe to start the program
  • OK all the prompts to back up your registry to the default location.
Note: to restore your registry, go to the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

Then, open Notepad (press Start->Run, enter notepad and press OK)
Copy everything inside the code box below (Starting with REGEDIT4) and paste it into a new notepad file.

Note: Please copy and paste all the text at once, and check that there is NO blank line above REGEDIT4 and one blank line at the bottom.
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{baf2f900-edc8-11dc-aad3-000ea65ecef7}]
Change the Save As Type to All Files and save it as fix.reg to your Desktop.
Locate fix.reg on your Desktop, if you did it right it should look like this:Posted Image
Double-click it, when it asks if you want to merge with the registry, click Yes.
You can then delete fix.reg

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download: DelDomains.inf from here:
http://mvps.org/winh.../DelDomains.inf
Then, close all open browsers
Right-click DelDomains.inf and select Install
Note: this will remove all entries in the Trusted Zone and Restricted Zone.
You will need to re-immunize with Spybot and SpywareBlaster but please don't do this until we're finished.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

You have custom hosts file protection installed, the DNS Client service can cause performance problems when this is installed so I recommend you disable it:

Stop and Disable the DNS Client Service
Go to Start, Run and type Services.msc and click OK.
Under the Extended Tab, Scroll down and find this service.
DNS Client
Right-Click on the DNS Client Service. Choose Properties
Select the General tab. Click on the Stop button.
Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side at the Start-up Type box.
From the drop-down menu, select Disabled
Click the Apply tab, then click OK

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please try using HijackThis again, if it works then post the log.
If it fails, post a new DSS log.
Also, let me know about the questions at the top of this post :)

Hi Silver,

Before I go through the next series of tasks I'll quickly reply to the HJT issue. HJT locked up while performing a scan and therefore did not produce a log since the scan never completed. I ran DSS which first attempted to run HJT, then ran the clone. While the DSS main report includes the HJT info I was a bit surprised to see that the DSS program had actually opened HJT and that HJT performed the scan without locking up. Go figure.

I'll mention here, too, that I had this problem with HJT over a year ago. After many, many attempts to trouble-shoot the cause through another anti-malware forum the issue was never resolved.

I did delete Google Toolbar so I'm not sure why you're still seeing it. Possibly Google Gmail notifier, which I also have?

I deleted Incredimail and ComboFix .exe files.

I'll start working on the other tasks and will append them to this post when finished.

Thanks,

Pete

Follow-up note: Well, well . . . HJT successfully ran a scan and produced a log.

Hi Tippaporn,

I did delete Google Toolbar so I'm not sure why you're still seeing it. Possibly Google Gmail notifier, which I also have?

Yes, sorry about that, I saw the a "Google Toolbar" BHO and didn't notice it was the notifier program.

I think the reason HijackThis was stalling was because your Internet Explorer Restricted Zone was loaded up with entries by SpywareBlaster and/or Spybot S&D. HijackThis probably didn't actually stop, it was just taking a very long time to go through all the entries. Now that those entries have been removed it works normally.

How is your computer running now? Are you still experiencing the same problems or have things improved?

Hi Silver, Besides the restricted zone lists installed by SpywareBlaster and Spybot S&D (10.5K entries total) I added IE-Spyads list on the 29th of March. No doubt it was a rather large list with 38K+ entries. I just now tested running HJT after reinstalling only the SpywareBlaster and Spybot S&D restricted zone lists and while it hangs very temporarily at one point it ultimately functions. I once again added IE-Spyads list and HJT crapped out. Seems if the restricted sites zone is too large HJT grinds to a halt. Well, at least we've got that puzzle figured out. Unfortunately, IE was still locking up this morning despite having no entries in the restricted sites zone. The only other item possibly worth mentioning in regards to recent changes in my PC is the upgrade from IE6 to IE7. IE7 has updated itself once since the initial install. My problem did not occur until after IE7's update. Is IE7 potentially a problem? Beyond that I'm admittedly clueless. :( Thanks, Pete

Hi Tippaporn,

At this stage I think your machine is clean of malware, so I would say the IE problems have other causes. From what you've said it certainly sounds like update could be related to the problem. One final suggestion I have would be to temporarily uninstall SpywareGuard and see if there is any change.

As it is not malware-related, if the problem persists I think the fastest way to get a result is to refer you to the Tech Team in the Browsers, Internet and email forum. The team there specialize in this type of issue so you are certain to get expert assistance and a speedy resolution is very likely.

Here are some important final steps:

Please delete DSS.exe, fix.reg and Flash_Disinfector.exe from your Desktop, also delete this folder:

C:\Deckard

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Here are some tips to help you keep your computer clean:

You should consider installing a Personal Firewall program. Even if you are behind a NAT router, I recommend you use firewall software as it will improve the security of your computer by monitoring and controlling outbound connections to the internet as well as inbound. There are various free packages available, one I can recommend is Comodo:
http://www.personalf...all.comodo.com/
A tutorial on firewalls to help you get started:
http://www.bleepingc...tutorial60.html

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins or ActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable. One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

Hi Silver,

I've reinstalled the SpywareBlaster and Spybot S&D restricted sites lists as well as IE-Spyad. Although the size overwhelms HJT during a scan my reasoning is that in the event I need to produce an HJT log I can easily purge the restricted sites list using DelDomain, produce an HJT log, and then reinstall the lists using ZonedOut 3.5 in a matter of minutes. Not too much trouble at all. Overall I feel safer with the expansion of the restricted sites. I would be curious to know, though, if an exceedingly extensive list would create other unintended problems beyond HJT. Perhaps I'll raise the issue in the SpywareWarrior forum unless I could receive an answer in this forum.

Otherwise, my immense gratitude for your help and your concluding suggestions. Posted Image Posted Image If by chance you one day find yourself in Bangkok feel free to contact me via email. I promise to not get you into too much trouble here. Posted Image Posted Image :o

Hi Tippaporn,

It sounds like you have the management of your Restricted Zone well under control. There may be some consequences due to having a very large Restricted Zone, such as performance issues in Outlook, there is some information on the problem here:
http://msmvps.com/bl.../13/901386.aspx

Using the Restricted Zone does offer good protection, but some experts (such as in the posting I linked to) think that if a site is bad enough to need restrictions, then why not block it altogether such as with a good custom hosts file such as with MVPS HOSTS or Bluetack. Spybot does add hosts file protection but I believe these hosts files are more comprehensive.

Another way to tackle it is to browse with Firefox using the NoScript extension - then every site is 'restricted' until you choose whitelist it which you can do temporarily or permanently. This is how I browse the web.

It's down to you to choose what you are most comfortable with, so I recommend you read the information and decide what's best. If you have questions then feel free to raise them here or at Spyware Warrior if you prefer.

You're most welcome and we're very happy to help. If you have any questions or comments then please respond, otherwise I will close this topic in a couple of days.
