Kill with Taskmanager any of the below files using ALT/CTRL/DEL ro bring up taskmanager

* Any process with cfexe file extensions
* FindStr.exe
* Regsvr32.exe
Hard drive LED wasn't flashing. Rebooted. Things are still loading. The clock is still 24hr instead of 12hr. The background says something about "Active Desktop Recovery" and said to click "restore active desktop" if I restarted my computer without shutting it down first. I'll let you know what else happens when it finishes loading everything.

Finished starting up. Background is still the same way. Everything else looks the same.

Are you saying the background is messed-up?
Still slow to start up, but that's probably normal for this machine, at least with all those programs that run on startup. I'm still curious why the default URL (home page, search, whatever) were being changed (or trying to be changed). And I have no idea why ComboFix froze, either. But it seems to be running the same as before I tried to run CFScript
Combofix makes alot of changes so I'm guessing that's what was making the changes.
After doing the below let me know how everything is.

Good job

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Here's my usual all clean post

    Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

    %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

    Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
    Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      2. Click once on the Security tab
      3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
      5. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      6. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      7. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      8. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      9. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      10. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      11. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      12. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Everything seems fine now, as far as I can tell.

Can Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware be used regularly like Ad-Aware can?

What (free) firewall software do you recommend?

Also, can you check this last HijackThis log for good measure? I made it after following the instructions in your last post.
