Done. It found 2 instances and I deleted them both.
Something new is hapening on startup. Just before the desktop icons appear, a DOS box appears and runs (or tries to run) two programs. They happen so fast I was unable to fully see the first one's name, but it ended with "ntvd.(something)" The second one shows as "Program File (something)/Windows~3/MSAscui.exe"
I checked the startup info in msconfig, and found two entries with "unknown as a manufacturer:
1) Windows Defender – Command: %ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe -hide
2) KBD – Command: C:\HP\KBD\KbdStub.EXE
I have no idea if these are related to that issue or not.

Here is the latest HT log. There is still a "017" line.

We need to disable some programs you have running.

SPYBOT TEATIMER
Launch Spybot S&D, go to the Mode menu and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected.
On the left hand side, click on Tools, then click on the Resident Icon in the list.
Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
Click on the "System Startup" icon in the List
Uncheck the "TeaTimer" box and "OK" any prompts.
If Teatimer gives you a warning that changes were made, click the "Allow Change" box when prompted.
Exit Spybot S&D when done.
(When we are done, you can re-enable Teatimer using the same steps but this time place a check next to "Resident TeaTimer" and check the "TeaTimer" box in System Startup.]

WINDOWS DEFENDER
Click Start > Programs > Windows Defender or launch from the system tray icon.
Click on Tools & Settings > Options.
Under Real-time protection options, uncheck the "Real-time protection" check box.
Click Save.
Go to Start > Control Panel > Security > Windows Defender, at the bottom of the Window Defenders page uncheck under Administrator Options "use Windows Defender" and then Save.
(When we are done, you can re-enable Defender using the same steps but this time place a check next to "Turn on real-time protection" check box.)

SYMANTEC ENDPOINT PROTECTION
Right click on the icon in the taskbar notification area & select "Disable Symantec EndPoint Protection".

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Well, we tried uninstalling Spybot before, but apparently it didn't take if you're still seeing things about it. There isn't even a startup icon for it anymore. I'll go in and just delete the whole Spybot folder, then reboot before doing anything else.
Spybot – Spybot was completely uninstalled and then deleted from the system back when you first mentioned it. Even though line 04 is showing TeaTimer, there is no such folder anymore. I've searched for the TeaTimer filename, with no results. I have no clue how this could still be showing as a runing process. I even thought that installing Spybot again and then uninstalling it might help, but I was unable to complete the download. At the end, this message appeared (which has never appeared before): "C:\Program FIles\Windows Defender\MpOav.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support." Defender – I'm unable to do anything with Defender. When I select it from the Programs list, there is a brief flash of a DOS window that then vanishes. No icon appears on the taskbar, and so there is no way to select its Tools. Windows Task Manager, under Services, shows WinDefend as Stopped (if this is relevant). Right-clicking and choosing Start does not affect it. I finally saw the full message that appears in the DOS box at startup (see March 27 post). "Program too big to fit in memory." Symantec – There is no Symantec icon. All Symentec programs were uninstalled before any of these problems began, before I ever posted on this forum (I now use AVG antispyware and antivirus). Neither Symantec or Norton appears in the Startup/Programs menu. However, there was a message at the uninstall of Norton Internet Security that the "install" failed. Norton Internet Security still appears on the Add/Remove Programs list. Should I delete any remaining Norton and Symantec folders from the system? In Windows Task Manager, under Services, I found several Symantec services that were still running. I stopped them all, but it didn't carry over through the reboot. They are (with their status): - AppCore Service – started - Core LC – (blank) - Event Manager – Started - IS Password Validation – (blank) - Lic NetConnect service – Started - RemoteAssist – (blank) - Setting Manager – Started
Lets try this;

Please delete any HijackThis Folders and Files you have now.

Download this one HijackThis.

Click the "Save" button.

Please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Open HijackThis and select: Do a system scan and save a log file.
I can't download it! It gets to 99% done, then that same message pops up as I noted in my last post: "C:\Program FIles\Windows Defender\MpOav.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support." The folder ends up being empty. In the meantime, the original HijackThis program and files are no longer on my system.
Try this one from http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/HJTsetup.exe.

Click on the link and select Save, save it to your desktop and double click HJTsetup.exe.

Open HijackThis and select: Do a system scan and save a log file.
I tried and got the same error message as before. I went into msconfig and unchecked Windows Defender from the startup list, then rebooted. Tried downloading the file again and got the SAME message: "C:\Program FIles\Windows Defender\MpOav.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support." I don't get it! Apparently Defender isn't working properly, as I can't even get it to open so I can turn it off properly. But it's off in Startup, so…. I don't know.
try System Restore. 1. Click Start. 2. Point to All Programs. 3. Point to Accessories. 4. Point to System Tools. 5. Click System Restore. 6. Follow the instructions on the wizard. See if you can find a date that HijackThis will work.
Unfortunately, there is no system restore point before these problems happened. I think I'm going to be forced to wipe the drive and reinstall the OS.
Are these still there? I don't know why they wouldn't be, as we haven't been able to do anything further since the ;last removal attempt. I'm actually doing alll of this for a completely computer-illiterate friend, which requires me to keep running out to his house to work on the system, and so that's why there's been such a lag in answers to you. I'll get a new log posted shortly.
