Hi,

I've been infected with the SmitFraud for a while now and have attempted to rid this myself. I installed Spybot - Search & Destroy and it identified Smitfraud in the file "core.cache.dsk" as the culprit. I've been able to successfully delete this file in Safe mode, however, when I bootup normally, this file reappears again. I've also try to run SmitFraudFix.exe in safe mode, however, I get an error during the clean process that says error importing the registry.

Please help.. I've attached my log.

Thanks

Hello alphakyu and welcome to the What the Tech Forums

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your problem.

A. First we need to disable some of your security programs so that they do not interfere with our tools:

AD-AWARE AD-WATCH
  • Right click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray.
  • At the bottom of the screen there will be two checkable items called "Active" and "Automatic".
    • Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it.
    • Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically.
  • Uncheck both of those boxes.
  • (When done, you can re-enable it using the same steps but this time check both boxes.)

AVG
Please open the AVG Control Center program -> double-click on the "AVG Resident Shield" component (looks like this: [external image: Posted Image]) -> deselect the "Turn on AVG Resident Shield" checkmark and save the setting.
When you need to enable the AVG Resident Shield, ( I’ll let you know when) just open the AVG Control Center program -> double-click on the "AVG Resident Shield" component -> select the "Turn on AVG Resident Shield" checkmark and save the setting.

B. Please RUN HijackThis
  • Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\windows\system32\blank.htm
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\windows\system32\blank.htm
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4E8F5D76-EF5B-46C8-B35B-C86F8BD6621A} - (no file)
    O16 - DPF: {50BD5CDA-4BA8-4048-8FAA-763F222E41D8} - ms-its:mhtml:file://c:\\nores.mht!http://adxrnet.net/code/chm/xpre.chm::/xpreload.ocx
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: qomnopq - qomnopq.dll (file missing)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: vcuiyqof - vcuiyqof.dll (file missing)

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

C. Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE directly to your Desktop.

Note: If you already have ComboFix on your machine, please DELETE it from your desktop before downloading the newest version.

Go to [external image: Posted Image] -> Run -> copy/paste the following single line command in the runbox & click OK

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

[external image: Posted Image]
  • ComboFix will automatically start. Any monitoring programs will be shut down like your antivirus, antispyware programs for example.
  • ComboFix may restart your computer, this is normal.
  • When finished, it will produce a log, ComboFix.txt.
  • Please post ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Hi Trevuren,

Your system is infected with a Vundo trojan File infector. This infection renames executable files that run at startup and replaces them with infected copies. We will try to reverse the process. Be advised that there is a possibility that you may have to reinstall certain programs where a legitimate replacement file can not be found.

A. Please ensure that your security program is still disabled.

B. 1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.
2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

KillAll::

File::
C:\WINNT\system32\Uninstall.ico
C:\WINNT\system32\Help.ico
C:\WINNT\system32\pavas.ico
C:\install.dat
C:\WINNT\system32\rushnqgg.exe
C:\Program Files\folder.htt
C:\huadio.tmp

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Now drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

5. All your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) will be stopped.

[external image: Posted Image]

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

6. ComboFix will automatically REBOOT your machine when the KillAll:: switch is used..

7. Post the following logs/Reports:
  • ComboFix.txt
  • Fresh HijackThis log run after all the other tools have performed their cleanup.
CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

C. Using Internet Explorer, please do a Kaspersky Online Scan

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure as follows:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will provide a report if your system is infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.

    [external image: Posted Image]

  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop and post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
Here are my logs for ComboFix, Hijack and Kaspersky, respectively….

Scan process completed.
Things are looking good! The replacement of the infected file appears to have been successful.

Please RUN HijackThis
  • Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Synchronization Manager] mobsync.exe /logon

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.
  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in this thread so we can check how everything looks now. In addition, please tell me if there are any more malware problems that you are aware of.
I believe this was the only Malware issue I had.

Here is my last (hopefully) hijack log…. Let me know if I'm clean! I don't seem to be getting any random popup IE windows anymore.

Ok. this is what happened.

I performed steps 1 and 2 with no problems.
- For step 3, i restarted by computer in safe mode and then could not find the file:
C:\windows\system32\blank.htm

- I ran hijack this and saved the log while in Safe mode (1st log attached)
- I rebooted my computer normally, and then upon entering windows, my Ad-watch program detects 5 registry modifications. I chose to "block" each of these modifications (attached is a screen shot of the events that occured)

I performed another hijack this in normal mode (2nd log attached)

When we fix entries in HijackThis, we are in fact modifying the registry. Ad-Watch was just telling you that we had made changes to your registry. Please repeat the procedures in my last reply but "allow" the changes when asked by Ad-Watch. Ad-Watch was just doing its job. In addition, I do not require a HJT log from Safe Mode. Thanks. Trevuren

Your log looks clean. If you have no more malware-related problems that you are aware of, just give me the OK and we can start the final but essential cleanup procedures and recommendations.

Trevuren
Congratulations, your logs look CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you system is completely clean:

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

  • [external image: Posted Image]

The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

1. Make your Internet Explorer More Secure
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab.
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.

    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt.
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable.
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable.
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt.
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt.
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt.
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
2. Use and Update an Anti-Virus Software - I can not overemphasize the need for you to use and update your Anti-virus application on a regular basis. With the ever increasing number of new variants of malware arriving on the scene daily, you become very susceptible to an attack without updated protection.

3. FIREWALL
Using a third-party firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. A tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones can be found here

Do not install more than one firewall program because they will conflict with each other

4. Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. Without these you are leaving the back door open.

5. Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

6. Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Download and install Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide real time spyware and hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would with your anti-virus software. A tutorial on installing and using this product can be found here:
Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware

8. Finally, I strongly recommend that you read TonyKlein's good advice So how did I get infected in the first place?
