[Closed] HiJack log - IE redirecting problem

3 min read

This thread's last reply is from . Advice, software, and links below may be out of date — treat specific steps and download links with caution.

Looking for the outcome? Ask AI

Im helping my dad with this so here is some background:

Initally, this URL would pop up for a split second, http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=74005 but then it would be replaced by http://slirsredirect.search.aol.com/slirs_…252Ffwlink%252F

I had my dad run Ad-ware, and the programs you guys have mentioned and after that he would at least get a "working" page but it's this now, http://www.cox.net/fwlink/?LinkId=74005

I tried having him change the homepage etc.. but those changes have been overridden by the above mentioned redirect URL. Ive had had him run Hijack this and below is his log. He has not been able to even type in URL's because those would be redirected. Hopefully you guys can help because Im out of ideas! Thanks! Below is his Hijack Log

Hello Derek,

Welcome to the Whatthetech Malware Removal Forum Your log basically looks ok, but your running an outdated version of HJT and it may not be showing everything, so uninstall it via the Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

Download Trendmicros Hijackthis to your desktop.
Double click it to install
Follow the prompts and by default it will install in C:\Program Files\Trendmicro\Hijackthis\Highjackthis.exe

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a Hijackthis log.

Post the Malwarebytes log and a new HJT log from Trendmicro please
Thanks for the reply Ken!

Derick,

My bad on HJT :smack: , to many logs to work and I got your post mixed up with another one, your version of HJT is current and it still looks fine.

Lets try a few things.

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.
  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
  • Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!
**Note** Go to Options> Cookies and any you want to keep move them to The Keep window

  • Next Go start> Run type cmd and hit OK
  • Type in ipconfig /flushdns then hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)
  • Type exit hit enter

Malwarebytes did not find anything bad, if either of the above did not help then run this free online Virus scanner from Kaspersky.

Run this free online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan: Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
Post the log along with a New HJT Log into your next reply.
