[Closed] Not sure what is going on

Hello there.

I have a very basic HP Pavilion with Windows XP and the Verizon Internet Security Suite.

1. Explorer frequently freezes and I get (not responding) at the top of the page.
2. The computer never goes into standby mode for more than a few seconds, then it comes back on. It's like there is always something running that prevents it from going into standby–or whatever it is called.
3. When I try to restart, I usually end up pressing and holding the power button until it shuts off because I will get a popup telling me that uipopuphidden is not responding, but even after I click 'end now' it will not shut down and restart. I think that program is malware–according to a Google search.

I have run the anti-virus and anti-spyware scans in the Verizon Internet Security Suite, plus AVG, Avast, SpyBot, and Ad-Aware. I turn the Verizon Security Suite off before I run the scans. Pardon my complete ignorance, but someone told me that with DSL, you should not turn your security off–not even if Explorer is closed, because things can still get in through the constant connection. Is that true?

Yes some what that is what a firewall is for.

Remove "Verizon Internet Security Suite"

I have run the anti-virus and anti-spyware scans in the Verizon Internet Security Suite, plus AVG, Avast, SpyBot, and Ad-Aware.

Install a firewall.

Then download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt

Hello there. Thanks for responding to my post. I still have a couple of questions. –Is there any particular firewall I should use? I see that someone on this site recommends Zone Alarm, Kerio Personal Firewall, Outpost Firewall, Sygate Personal Firewall –You said to remove Verizon Security Suite - do I reinstall it after I run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware or do I never use it again? I pay a monthly fee for it, so if it is no good, I will cancel it. Also, what do I do with the Malwarebytes log after I get it??? Sorry to be a bother. I don't know a whole lot about computers. I am learning as I go. Thanks again, Pam
