[Resolved] Vundo infection + possibly others

This is my friend's computer and there's quite a few infections on it. AVG Free picked up about 26 trojan infections about seven minutes after starting the scan. So far there's no more from what I've scanned. Ad-Aware picked up a couple of spyware infections as well.

But I think there's a Vundo infection too; there's the red X as the C: drive icon as well as the thousands of tmp files in the root of the C: and the My Documents folder. It also has the thousands of randomly named .dll files. There is also two icons on the desktop named "Help and Support Center" and "Windows Update" which lead to a url for Storage Protector.

There's a third icon that says "Internet Security Suite" that leads to:
http://ad.outerinfoads.com/reficon?bid=4047&pid=1600&oid=5&fid=99001281
I'm not sure if the above URL has to do with Vundo, though.

Anyway it would be great if you guys could help me with removing Vundo. Last time I did it with my other friend's computer I got rid of it successfully but it did quite carelessly without a HJT pro's help. I know the infection and could probably get rid of it myself with the Combofix or the Vundofix but I'd rather not do it without your guys' direction. Thanks.

On other note, is there a better free anti-virus than AVG? Should I replace AVG with another one or is it fine?

Now for the HJT log:

Hi

AVG is a perfectly good free Anti-Virus, should be sufficient to keep you protected. However, you appear to have both Trend Micro and AVG Anti-Virus software. You should only ever have one on-access Anti-Virus installed as multiple scanners can cause conflicts and slow your system down.

1. Go to Start->Run and type in notepad and hit OK.

2. Then copy and paste the content of the following codebox into Notepad:

@echo off
FOR %%G IN (
C:\Pos*.tmp
"%userprofile%\My Documents\Pos*.tmp"
) DO (
attrib -r -h -s %%G
del /q /f %%G
)
del delete.bat

3. Save the file to your DESKTOP as "delete.bat". Make sure to save it with the quotes. Once saved, the icon to click should look like this on your desktop: [external image: Posted Image]

4. Double click delete.bat.

You need to disable TeaTimer, so that it doesn't interfere with our fix.

This is a two step process.
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, click once on Resident Protection, then right-click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For both versions :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go to the bottom of the vertical panel on the left, click Tools
  • Then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Download ComboFix by sUBs from here or here

**Save it to your desktop**

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log

Note:
Do not mouseclick Combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Thanks.
Thanks for the reply. I have run Combofix and done as you asked (although the .tmp files were named pos*.tmp, not Pos*.tmp… I'm not sure whether it is case sensitive but the batch file did nothing for some reason or another so I just went into the command line and did a del pos*.tmp in the C: and My Documents folder myself. That should be okay, right?)

Before I post the log, there were several existing errors that were not solved by the Combo fix.

The first one is a RUNDLL error:
[external image: Posted Image]
I read that the error is a result of the malware or something trying to startup but it can't.

The second I'm not sure is malware related, but I'm going to post it here anyway. Most of the time the error pops up then more of the same one constantly pop up so there's about 10 or more of the same error:
[external image: Posted Image]

The third I didn't get a picture of but the C drive still has the red X. I think I read that it's a registry entry but I'm not sure on which one it is.

Alright I just received a pop up. I'm currently using Internet Explorer on this machine (Firefox isn't installed but I will install it and tell my friend to use it instead). When I was using Portable Firefox and NOT IE, from what I recall, I was not receiving any popups. So maybe there's something else or Vundo is still around? The pop ups are not pornographic though if that's important. And about the AVG issue, I will be removing AVG before I return the machine, just letting you know.

Thanks for all the help, I appreciate it :)

EDIT: I just realized that the Storage Protector icons (the "Windows Update" and "Help and Support Center") are still present on the desktop. (end edit)

Okay, now for the Combofix log:

Thanks for your help. I appreciate it.

As for the performance of the computer, it's perfectly usable; since I ran Combofix, I've been receiving no pop ups even though I'm currently using Internet Explorer. Also I have not received the second error notice (the one about the Linksys driver or whatever) and AFAIK I have not received the first error notice about the missing DLL; the computer is set to auto login so I turned it on then left it for several minutes, so while I'm sure the error notice didn't pop up, I'm not 100% sure.

I've also noticed that the red X C drive icon is now gone and it's replaced with the normal drive C icon. Thanks so much :) The only thing left from what I can tell are the viruses and adware that Kaspersky identified.
Hi (edited… change of plans, see below) EDIT: Change of plans… turns out I'll be returning it later than I expect so I WILL have time to do any last fixups today. Thanks.
Hi, my name is Trevuren. I am posting this on behalf of jp who is unable to reach the site today. He will be back in business later tonight.

Hi

Sorry about the delays here, time differences are hindering us and I missed your first reply.

FindAWF

Click here to download FindAWF.exe and save it to your desktop.

  • Double-click on the FindAWF.exe file to run it.
  • It will open a command prompt and ask you to Press any key to continue.
  • Press 1 and then Enter, and the FindAWF tool will begin scanning your computer for the infected AWF files and the backups the trojan created.
  • It may take a few minutes to complete so be patient.
  • When it is complete, it will open a text file in notepad called AWF.txt which will automatically be saved to your desktop or to the same location as FindAWF.exe.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the AWF.txt file in your next reply.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:

  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

We need to upload a file to Jotti

1. Click HERE to get to Jotti's site.

2. At the top of the Jotti window, use the Browse button to locate the following file on your system:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\C1A91F0962.sys

3. Once you have located the file, click SUBMIT and the content of the file will be uploaded by the site and analysed.

4. Please provide me with the results of the analysis.

You can also delete this from your desktop:

Thanks.

Ahh!! Only a couple hours too late :( I had to return the computer this morning. I'm sorry! But you did help me get rid of most of the infections and the computer is usable. Thanks for all of your help. You can close this topic now.
