Hi, I guess there is spyware or Trojan on my PC. I noticed this several days ago.

Internet Explorer is redirected to other sites randomly (it happens sometimes) and sometimes there is pop-up windows, also directing to some random sites.

I have downloaded Ad-Aware and Spypot to scan the whole system. Seems like there is Zlob and Win32.trojandownloader, but I am not sure. I have tried to remove the stuff found by the program. But the problrm still persists. Also have McAFee installed on my PC. I have done a whole system scan but nothing is found.

Could you please take a look at the system? Thanks in advance.

Hello and Welcome to the forum.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Open the HijackThis Folder. Find the file HijackThis.exe, Right Click on the file and Select Rename. Rename Hijackthis.exe to Spyware.exe.

Post a new HijackThis Log.
Hi, thanks for the quick response. The "hide system file" option has been unchecked. I also rename hijackthis to spyware as you said.

Here is the new log. Pleasehave a look.

  • Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • WARNING: IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts
  • Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
——————————————————————–

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.
Thanks again. I have followed your procedures and generated the combofix log. The hijackthis is pasted after the combofix log. One last thing, I saw that spybot stops some weird activity in the registry when combofix is running (like stop changing the default url, etc). Not sure if it is relevant, just want to let you know.

Here it is.

Save this as Save this as "CFScript"

[external image: Posted Image]

Drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

Then post the results log and a new HijackThis log.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi,

I have just created the CFscript and rerun combofix and hijackthis again. The new logs are attached (combofix then hijackthis)

As for the system, I closed spybot before I run combofix. However, when windows is rebooted during the 2nd combofix process, spybot is ON again and tried to stop the weird things happening in the registry. I couldn't catch all of them but I see the hhicm and the scrnsave.exe is being changed….Just want to let you know. So, I don't know if the whole problem is fixed becasue I still see these weird in the registry.

The redirecting problem is random. Sometimes you see it, but not every single click. So, I don't know if the problem is completely fixed.

PS: I need to go to an appointment in 20min, so I might not be able to follow the instructions immediately. I will be back in afew hours though. Sorry about that.

Spybot

You can download it again after you're clean

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi, I just removed spybot as you suggested. Now, I need to reboot to completely remove the program. After rebooting, some weird black CMD windows pop up and disappear and there is a complain about no hhicmdbw.dll module can be found. I think this is one of the problem files deleted by combofix. The system seems stable but I am still concerned about the CMD pop up after I reboot. Seems like some program is still running even though you help me removed many files using combofix.

The new hijackthis log is below.

Thanks for the quick response. I just followed your instructions and posted the new hijackthis log below. Also, I could find the hhicmdbw file in the system32/ directory. But I use hijackthis to fix the related problem in the registry.

After rebooting, I don't see the cmd window popingup. Also, the system seems stable at this momemt. Haven't experiend the redirect yet (after the fix) up to this moment.

Here's my usual all clean post

    Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

    %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

    Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
    Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      • Click once on the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Note: I no longer suggest Zone Alarm

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Using IE-SPYAD to help block unwanted sites and activities

  • Winpatrol

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

You can download and re-install Spybot now if you want.

So how did I get infected in the first place?

Thanks LdTate!. As I mentioned before, I need to go to now (actually 15 minutes ago). But I have to thank you a million times. You are like the White Knight on the internet that helps stupid people like me. Can't express my appreciation more. I will pay close attention to my system and get back to you if necessary. Hopefully everything is getting back to normal. I will read all the relevant sectiosn that you suggest and will do everything to avoid bad things to happen again. THANKS!!! You are the MAN!
