When I try to go to open Internet Explorer, it goes straight to a page titled Browser Warning - your internet privacy is being compromised…
It goes on to list my Ip address, my ISP, that I am in Australia, I use Internet Explorer & have Windows XP Service pack 2, then list a whole range of filthy words that are found on my computer.
It gives a number of links to sites where I can download software to clean my computer - I didn't click on any link.
At the bottom it says - Browser security Warning 648243-#2-7279 Client Investigation Report.
I have scanned with adaware (BTW I can't download my updated definitions, I figured it may be related) - it found a couple of minor tracking cookies that I quarantined & then deleted. I did full AVG (updated) scan - found nothing. I did turn off system restore while doing this.
I then did online Panda scan with these results -
Incident Status Location
Spyware:Cookie/Tribalfusion Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Cookies\hp_administrator@tribalfusion[2].txt
Potentially unwanted tool:Application/KillApp.B Not disinfected C:\hp\bin\KillIt.exe
Then tried a Trend Housecall online scan & it only found 2 cookies which I removed. When i start computer again - the rotten page appears again.
I then posted the above info on newsgroup & was told to try HijackThis & post log file here - which i am now doing.

Hi! Welcome to the WTT forums.
My name is Scotty. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research.
Please be patient.

Please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list… button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.
HI Scotty, Thanks for rapid reply, here is uninstall list from Hijack this. Should I have run hijack This under SAFE mode, because I ran it under NORMAL mode? Hi

Download and Run SmitfraudFix
Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Hi

If you already have Combofix, please delete that copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.

Please download Combofix from Bleeping Computer.

If you can't download it from there, please try these 2 alternative sites:

Forospyware
Geeks to Go

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet, than disable your anti-virus and any real-time anti-spyware monitors that are running.
  • Click Start>Run copy/paste or type "%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall into the Run box and click OK.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply with a new HijackThis log.
Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
Note 2:Remember to re-enable your anti-virus and anti-spyware before reconnecting to the Internet.

I see that it still has the home page going to the porn site.

Hi

Im not seeing anything untoward. Let's try this.

Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present):

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.livehardtube.com/ to verify your age, REQUIRED! WARNING! Adult pictures are featured in this site. Only adults permitted beyond this point! Are you at least 18 years old

WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

Reboot the computer and tell me if that made a difference.
HI scotty,
That seems to have done the trick - thank you so much. I run anti virus software, updated automatically, I have Zonealarm running & update regularly. Is there anythin else I can do to stop this happening again - I never click on an unknown link in an email.
This is the Hijack This log after I rebooted.

Again thank you very much Scotty for your time & patience. Cheers
Hi

Be wary when visiting websites you dont really know. Especially if they try to install things. Ill recommend a couple of programs below that will protect your start page.

First, delete the Smitfraudfix folder from your Desktop.

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the x and the /u, it needs to be there.

    [external image: Posted Image]

Delete the older versions of Java and download the newest.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.
  • Close any programmes you may have running, ESPECIALLY your web browser
  • Click Start > Control Panel.
  • Click Add/Remove Programs.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) (4th one down the list), which is JRE6u4, and click Yes at the page warning, then accept the Licence Agreement before downloading the Offline file.

Here are two free programs I recommend.

Spybot Search and Destroy
Download it from here . Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Make sure your Windows is ALWAYS up to date!

An unpatched Windows is vulnerable and even with the "best" Antivirus and Firewall installed, malware will find its way through.
So visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ to download and install the latest updates.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can be closed.
Thanks Scotty your help was great, still doing some of the housekeeping but your instructions are very clear so I am sure I'll have no problems. Nothing personal but I hope I don't have to talk to you here again :) Cheers
