Everything was checked
After unchecking it made me restart
Still Frozen at 'loading your personal setting'. Background screen is blue instead of the usual picture.
Is system restore working?
You could try System Restore.
1.
Click Start.
2.
Point to All Programs.
3.
Point to Accessories.
4.
Point to System Tools.
5.
Click System Restore.
6.
Follow the instructions on the wizard.
See if you can find a date the the PC worked.
O.K. tried this a few times with various dates
Virus kicked in on 22 Jan so I tried, 17th and then went to the 1st and even Dec 2007.
System restore does not finish,
it eventually restarts the computer (wont boot on normal mode)
When I log back in on safe mode it says:
"
Your Computer cannot be restored to :
Date
software change
No changes have been made to your computer."
Could this because my system thinks it is currently feb 2000? I noticed that it has restore points for Jan and Feb 2000 from when I downloaded AVG etc. to deal with this problem (this computer was bought in 2003-4 so it probably wasn't even built then.
Can you change the date from the taskbar?
Yes I can change the date but it always resets after I reboot. So for the last few days (the bulk of this work) I have left it as is.
I changed it to 2008 just before running the system restore and the date has remained correct despite 3-4 reboots. Whatever was causing that must have been removed
Also there are no longer any files highlighted as 'new'
Still cannot access taskmanager or reboot in normal mode
Download and run this REG fix and double-click it.
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/reg/EnableTM.reg
Let me know if taskmanager now works.
TASK MANAGER IS BACK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OK.
So your connection to the internet is working?
Lets try this:
Lets run an F-Secure online scan it will scan for Viruses, Spyware and RootKits: Click HERE Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Start scanning button. A window will pop up. Allow the Active X control to be installed on your computer, then click the Accept button Click Full System Scan and allow the components to download and the scan to complete. If malware is found, check Submit samples to F-Secure then select Automatic cleaning When cleaning has finitished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report) Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post
If Automatic cleaning with Submit samples hangs, click
Cancel , then
New Scan When the cleaning option is presented, Uncheck Submit samples to F-Secure Click Automatic cleaning When cleaning has finitished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report) Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post
Note: This scan will only work with Internet Explorer.
You must be logged on a administrator rights to run this scan.
The scan may take a few hours.
Also let me know how the computer is running now.
Weird, Mozzila Firefox works fine but Internet Explorer thinks that I'm not connected to the internet.
My connection is through a wireless USB adapter but I dont see why one would work and not the other
Try freshening up your IP and clearing your DNS
Start - Run - (type)
cmd
this will bring up a DOS Box display with a blinking cursor
At the blinking cursor type the following commands in sequence, waiting for the procedures to complete before entering the next command:
ipconfig /release - enter <– notice the required space before the "/"
ipconfig /renew - enter <– notice the required space before the "/"
ipconfig /flushDNS - enter <– notice the required space before the "/"
(Each of the above ipconfig steps may take from a few seconds to a minute or so to complete.
Wait for the blinking cursor to return before moving on to typing the next command.)
Then type in Exit tap enter.
___________
If the above does not remedy the problem, try this Next:
go here:
http://files.webattack.com/localdl834/WinsockxpFix.exe
Download Winsockxpfix.exe to your Desktop
Run
Winsockxpfix.exe
When I ran Winsockxpfix.exe:
I hit 'fix'
IE is still acting like I'm not connected to the internet
Will any of the programs like combofix or malwarebytes run?
Yep. I have malwarebytes open right now.
Should I run a scan?
I never actually ran this, only one attempt in normal mode and it froze.
It found about 70 infected. All were removed
