hi,
I'm running Windows XP SP2.
in my system event viewer i'm seeing Event 52:
The driver has detected that device \Device\Harddisk1\DR1 has predicted that it will fail. Immediately back up your data and replace your hard disk drive. A failure may be imminent.
I just had to do some major disinfecting of a virus and this drive is about 2 months old. could this be due to the virus? Is there any diagnostic tool i can run to see if i really need to replace this drive?
thanks!
As a matter of great urgency, I suggest you consider doing this.
1 do not close down your machine and do not restart it.
2 Quickly get all your important stuff safely copied to separate media, (External hard drive, DVD Flash drives) etc
3 It is important that you do this BEFORE you do anything else at all.
4 Make sure your archive/copy/backup is 100% accurate, up to date, and reproducible.
5 Even if it is only a day or two out of date take the opportunity now to update it and check it.
You may have been given advance notice of an imminent disc failure, that could render all your data, photos, emails, favourites, spreadsheets, documents, drivers, settings in fact everything unaccessible to you without the help of an an expensive forensic data recovery laboratory, whose fees would make most folks eyes water!
It could be that you have received a "false alarm"…but please don't rely on this, a strategy that includes making a safe copy to separate media of all your important stuff without delay is strongly recommended.!

hello. i ran lookinmypc, and aside from just describing my drives, it didnt give me any diagnostic info. it gave all drives a status of 'OK'. When i look in my event viewer, i see another entry made this evening for the same drive warning. is there a more in depth drive diagnostic tool?
thanks!
There are a couple of small, easy-to-use dedicated HD diagnostic tools. The links to the tools are integrated into the text I direct you to.
If you like, you could do some reading on how to diagnose your HD.
Suggest you also go to start - run - type 'dxdiag' without the quotes - okay……………I do not think doing this is exactly what you require, but good to know for other instances of diagnostic issues.
I hope either or at least one of the above helps you.
1st. as suggested twice earlier back-up. 2nd find out brand name of the hard drive you have go to the manufacters web sight and go to surpport download their software to test the hard drive. If it come back as bad check the warranty on the sight if still under warranty put in a RMA. Sorry about the spelling
