Got this nasty virus 5 days ago and I've run Norton Antivirus several times but never fully deletes the virus - tried their fix and it didn't work. The windows autoinstaller for Symantec Antivirus + Adobe Acrobat 8.1.1 continue to pop up along with various annoying IE popups. Ran ATFCleaner, VundoFix and SpySweeper and think part of the problem is contained. Here is HJ log:

Hi silostar,

Temporarily disable Spy Sweeper
  • Open Spysweeper and click on Options->Program Options and uncheck Load at Windows Startup
  • On the left side click Shields and then uncheck everything there
  • Uncheck Home Page Shield
  • Uncheck Automatically restore default without notification
  • Exit the program

Please print/save a copy of the following instructions because we will be using Safe Mode, during which time you won't have access to the internet.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder (usually Start->My Computer->C:->SDFix and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).

Then download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post the SDFix report and both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.
Thanks for your help Silver. Below are the three logs. FYI - When I disabled Spy Sweeper I noticed that virtumonde is in the Quarantine.

Hi silostar,

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, look down the list for this and remove it:

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

This is out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (version 6 update 4) from here

You should also remove Cool Timer 2.2. It has been reported as containing adware. Cool Timer 3.3 appears to be clean and is available from Softpedia

Next, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines:

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Use Windows Explorer (right-click Start, select Explore) to find and delete the following folders:

C:\VundoFix Backups
C:\Program Files\Dot1XCfg

If you have trouble deleting either, please let me know in your next response.

Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command (it's one long command) into the box and press OK:

cmd /c dir C:\WINDOWS\system32\edcA01 /a /s >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"

A black box will open and a file will appear on your Desktop called look.txt.
Please wait until the black box closes before opening look.txt, then post the contents of look.txt in your next response.

Next, please do an online scan with Kaspersky:
Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer using this link:
http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/d…kavwebscan.html
  • Click Accept and the web scanner will begin to load
  • If a yellow warning bar appears at the top of the browser, click it and choose Install ActiveX Control
  • You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Install
  • If you are prompted about another ActiveX control called Kaspersky Online Scanner GUI part then allow it to be installed also.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.

Hi silostar,

Please open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following line:

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {9239E4EC-C9A6-11D2-A844-00C04F68D538} - (no file)

The following autostart entry is associated with Roxio Easy CD Creator, this may be the cause of the popup you refer to so if you wish to stop this from automatically starting then check this line also:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdaptecDirectCD] "C:\Program Files\Roxio\Easy CD Creator 5\DirectCD\DirectCD.exe"

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

I don't know what kind of prompt Symantec Antivirus is presenting - when it happens next, please note down what it says and put it in your next response.

Use Windows Explorer (right-click Start, select Explore) to find and delete the following::

C:\QooBox <– folder
C:\WINDOWS\system32\edcA01 <– folder

If you have trouble deleting any, please let me know in your next response.

Next, please open your Symantec Antivirus and empty the quarantine area, then do the same for Spy Sweeper.

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up… and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Once complete, please post a new HijackThis log and tell me how your computer is running.
Okay – think we may have this beast tamed.

I think Norton is fried though. The message I get for Symantec happens when I open a program. It's a Windows Installer popup that states 'Preparing to install…" Then another popup window comes up stating:

"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'Symantec AntiVirus.msi' in the box below."

I hit cancel, it keeps popping up. It happened again when I went to clean out the Quarantine in AntiVirus but I also received a new message "Bugger overrun detected. ProgramC:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\PC32.exe" ugh!

I was able to delete all Quarantine files. Here is the latest HJT log:

okay, I'm obviouslly tired. The message did not state "bugger overrun detected" – it said "buffer overrun detected" wish it did kill the bug though.
Hi silostar,

There are a number of programs which appear to have been damaged by the infection, Symantec Antivirus is one of them:

RealPlayer
Quicktime/iTunes
eFax
Adobe Reader
Symantec Antivirus
Dell Laser Printer software
Nvidia graphics driver
Google Toolbar
Skype
Plaxo
MSN Messenger
Picasa

These programs have autostarting applications appear to have been infected and removed by your protection software. They all may not require reinstallation, but I recommend you check the functionality of these programs and reinstall any that are not working correctly. I strongly recommend you reinstall Symantec Antivirus anyway - this program needs to be fully functional for your safety.

You should now deleted SDFix.exe and dss.exe from your Desktop. Also, delete this folder:

C:\SDFix

Re-enable Spy Sweeper
  • Open Spysweeper and click on Options > Program Options and check Load at Windows Startup
  • On the left click Shields and then check everything there
  • Check Home Page Shield
  • Check Automatically restore default without notification
  • Exit the program

At this stage I think your machine is clean of malware, here are some tips to help you keep it that way:

Operating system vulnerabilities can easily be exploited by malware so please ensure your operating system is automatically kept up to date by using Windows Update:
Go to Start->Control Panel->Automatic Updates
Select Automatic and select a suitable schedule
Also, check that your antivirus and antispyware programs are set to automatically update daily.

You should consider installing a Personal Firewall program. Even if you are behind a NAT router, I recommend you use firewall software as it will improve the security of your computer by monitoring and controlling outbound connections to the internet as well as inbound. There are various free packages available, one I can recommend is Comodo:

Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins orActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

Please post back to let me know that you have read this, and if there are any further issues.
hmmm….symantec and QuickTime are becoming problems to uninstall. Is there a way to force delete them? I'm going to install Kaspersky since I've heard good things about it and I've lost confidence in Symantec. Other than that, computer is quiet and running well. Thank you so much for your help!!
You're most welcome :)

There are manual removal instructions for Symantec Antivirus here for versions 10.0 and 3.x:

Here is a link to the Norton removal tool, this may or may not apply to your product:

If you do a manual uninstall, please make a new Restore Point before beginning, you can also back up your registry as follows:
Backup Your Registry with ERUNT:
  • Download erunt.zip to your Desktop from here:
    http://aumha.org/downloads/erunt.zip
  • Right-click erunt.zip, select Extract All… and follow the prompts to extract ERUNT to a new folder on your Desktop
  • Inside the new folder, double-click ERUNT.exe to start the program
  • OK all the prompts to back up your registry to the default location.
Note: to restore your registry, go to the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

With regard to iTunes/Quicktime, you could try downloading and installing the latest version and installing over the top, that may resolve the problem.
