Hello, I am grateful for your advice. My computer has suddenly started to run so slowly it can take up to ten minutes to open something up. We are constantly bombarded with pop ups, that are Explorer, yet we only use Firefox - often re adult websites. The computer also seems to be ticking over constantly as though it is processing something, yet it is virtually unusable as it is so slow at times. This is especially when you first turn it on.

I have scanned my computer with AVG virus software; SpyBot; Adaware; VundoFix; SuperAnti-SpyWare and nothing seems to fix it.
Some scans have shown up:

I found some cookies related to some of the above and removed them, but hasn't made much difference.

Welcome to What the Tech, sorry if there was a delay, it's a busy forum.

First of all you have Windows Defender, AVG Anti-Spyware and SUPERAntiSpyware with real time monitoring enabled, this is inadvisable as having more than one of these type of programs running with real time monitoring enabled may cause conflicts. Please choose one of these that you'd like to use for real time monitoring and disable it for the other ones, you can still use them as on demand scanners. If you are using a trial version of either AVG Anti-Spyware and/or SUPERAntiSpyware I suggest you don't choose one of those as 30 days after installation they degrade to on demand scanners anyway.

You don't seem to be running a firewall. If you're not running any firewall or are not sure please follow these instructions to turn Windows Firewall on.

Go to Control Panel or settings Control Panel
Double click on Windows Firewall
The two main options are On and Off. Check to see if there's a checkmark next to On and if not please select it.

Please now let me know if you are using Windows Firewall or another one.

Do you have Messenger Plus installed? If so please uninstall it.

Click on the Windows Start button in the left hand corner of your screen.
Go to Control Panel or Settings>Control Panel
Double click on Add or Remove Programs and uninstall
Messenger Plus or anything starting with that name

Now please reboot.


Please download NoLop to your Desktop from here

• First close any other programs you have running as this will require a reboot.
• Double click NoLop.exe to run it.
• Now click the button labelled "Search and Destroy".
  <<your computer will now be scanned for infected files>>
• When scanning is finished you will be prompted to reboot only if infected, Click OK.
• Now click the "REBOOT" Button.
• A Message should popup from NoLop. If not, double click the program again and it will finish.

--If you receive an error, "mscomctl.ocx or one of its dependencies are not correctly registered," please download mscomctl.ocx to your system32 folder then rerun the program.--

Please post the contents of C:\NoLop.log along with a fresh log from HijackThis(HJT).

Hello there. Thank you for such a quick response. I have now disabled both AVG Anti-Spyware and SUPERAntiSpyware as they were just new things I tried today, in desperation. The computer is def. faster since running AVG and removing whatever it found (which seemed to be different from all others I had tried). But still not back to normal. I followed your instructions and Windows Firewall is definitely turned on. Thanks.

Thank you for letting me know about the antispyware programs and what firewall you are using but you haven't followed the rest of my instructions. It is very important to follow all my instructions so that I can properly help you clean your computer. So please follow these instructions that you ignored.

Do you have Messenger Plus installed? If so please uninstall it.

Sorry about that, it was late at night and I must have missed the bottom. I don't have Messenger Plus.

I ran NoLop and it picked up an infection, then Rebooted. But after Reboot it didn't open again with a log. So I had to run again, but again there was no log as it said that there was no infection.

Pop-ups still keep happening.

Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files circle. A warning box will come up asking if you want to do this, press Yes. Press Apply and then OK.

Uncheck: "Only delete files older than 48 hrs.", click Ok
Then click Run Cleaner (bottom right) then Exit


* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:

• Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
• This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
• Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
• Choose the "Scan"-tab, remove the mark at "Heuristic analysis".
• Back at the main window, mark the drives that you want to scan.
• Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
• Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
• Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
• When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
• If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
  
  This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
• After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
• Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
• Close Dr.Web Cureit.
• Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
• After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.

Hello there. I really appreciate your help. My computer is definitely speeding up. Had some spam emails and pop ups this morning, but don't think any after the Dr web scan.

To confirm what I have done in order:

All until after revealing Hidden files. I was able to delete the flag ace stupid data folder. But, I could not see ALCXMNTR.EXE etc. in the C:\WINDOWS folder. It had $hf_mig$ then loads of folders with blue writing starting with $NtUninstallKB (followed by lots of diff. numbers); then addins; AppPatch; Assembly etc. etc.

In the CCleaner it had other items ticked under the Empty Recycle bin and Temporary Files boxes. I assumed that I needed to untick them as you did not have them in your list?

The first Dr.Web CureIt scan found no viruses.

After removing the 'Heuristic analysis' mark I was only allowed to select the C and D drives, which I did.

Go to Start then Search, click All files and folder. In Look in choose My Computer, then in All or part of the file name place in the file name to find out where it is on your computer. Once the locaton has been found, left click on it in the Search results windows and press the Delete button.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.

You didn't answer my question as to whether you have Weatherbug installed or not, please let me know.

I'd like you to check if you have System Restore enabled and if you not, then to enable it. Please follow these instructions.

Click the Start button
Right click on My Computer
Click Properties
Select the System Restore tab
If the status of any of the drives listed is Disabled please select the drive and click the Settings button.
There'll be a slider allowing you to adjust the amount of space you want System Restore to use for that drive.
The higher the percentage or space used, the more System Restore points will be able to be kept at any given time.
Please adjust it to the level you want and click OK
Now just to make sure it worked, please check if the drive now displays the status Monitoring, if not then please repeat until it does.
If more than one of your drives has System Restore disabled repeat the same process for them as well.

Sorry about that. No, I don't have weatherbug installed. The only drive that was listed was the C drive and that had 'monitoring' beside it. My computer seems to be working really well now, the only thing I notice is a load of junk mail that I didn't used to get. Thank you very much for your time and help. Glad to hear your computer is running much better and I'm glad to have been able to have helped you with it.

Windows Firewall is not very adequate as it only blocks incoming connections and not outgoing, while this is better than nothing, a 3rd party firewall will block both and increase your security. Therefore I highly recommend you install one of the following free versions of commercial products.

Once either of these programs are installed Windows Firewall will automatically turn itself off.


You aren't running the latest version of Adobe Reader. There are security exploits in previous versions that have been addressed in the latest version. For more information please see this site. Please uninstall your current version and go to this site and install the latest version.


Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:

• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
• Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4".
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
• In the Window that opens, select Windows, your Language, check the "agree" box and click Continue.
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
• Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
• Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
  • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
  • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
  • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
• Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.

Now here's some advice to help prevent reinfection.

1)Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

One important thing to note, if you decide to install more than one antispyware program(and at least 2 are advisable these days) please make sure only 1 has resident protection enabled to avoid conflicts, however these 2 shouldn't conflict with similar programs or each other.

SpywareBlaster

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

Okay, I have now done absolutely everything on the list, so hopefully my computer is guarded with armour! Can you pls finally confirm that I have One firewall; One Anti-virus BUT all of these on there i.e. Spybot; Adaware; Spyware blaster; Spyguard etc. listed in the 'So how did I get infected in the first place?'. Thank you SO much Can't thank you enough. Now, onto my laptop to do all of the above!
