For the past few weeks Internet explorer has been hanging up when trying to click on links within Outlook Express. And just this week another problem has appeared. When double clicking on a desktop folder to open it, a delay of up to 6 seconds lapses before the folder opens. Thanks.

I'm not seeing anything bad just a lot of programs running at startup that don't need to

I suggest you do this:

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove if listed:
Logitech Desktop Messenger

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Component Manager] "C:\PROGRAM FILES\HP\HPCORETECH\HPCMPMGR.EXE"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\QTTASK.EXE" -atboottime

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Thank you for your response.
Logitech Desktop Messenger removed via Add/Remove Programs.
Removed all but one process with Hijackthis. I kept the right-click menu button *Download with Star Downloader*. Although I removed it, I also want to keep Star Downloader as a startup item. Is this ok?
The link provided for ATF Cleaner didn't work. I found another link through Google and downloaded and ran the program. Two small windows appeared and both were named *Main*. I *selected all* on both and Emptied Selected.
I rebooted and used the computer for 15 minutes or so. It seems to be unchanged.
Then I rebooted again and ran a new log:

I haven't noticed anything different. Also, it always takes this computer 5 minutes and 45 seconds to boot.

3.When was the last time you ran Disk Defragmenter?
Do this after cleaning Temp files and cookies.
Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Disk Defragmenter

Your log looks good, but you need to update your Java.

You need to update SunJava.

"When was the last time you ran Disk Defragmenter?
When running Disk Defragmenter the computer will lock up after about an hour of running and has to be shut down with the on-off button.

Your log looks good, but you need to update your Java."
At the request of my online broker I've tried to update Java a few times over the last 3 months. The latest version, 6u4, will not install.
The error message reads:
jre-6u4-windows-1586-p.exe is not a valid Win32 Application

The latest version, 6u4, will not install.

My guess is it's because you're running Windows 98.
