I am going to ask one of our Expert Techs to step in here for a bit to see if he can get you through this. He will either get back to me on the problem or step in and take over this part in an attempt to get you through this. It may be a couple of days before he gets to this topic so please be patient. Okay. Thank you for your help. :) edit: It could be that I don't have the right CDs? I found a place on dell support where I can request one set of backup discs for my computer…so if need be, I'll get a new set. It's just…I'm pretty sure this (the cd I'm trying to use) is the CD that came with my computer because it was with the rest of my CDs/Documentation/etc for my laptop.
Hi Rine,

My name is Doug and I generally work over on the Tech side of the Forum.
It is unusual for any Tech to post here in the Malware side of the Forums.
So first, a brief disclaimer:
I am not Malware Removal Certified.
I have been invited to step into this thread by your Malware Expert, to assist with Systems Related issues only.
I'm glad to help.

Trevuren has you on the right track by suggesting System File Checker as a first step.
Since your Recovery options are limited by the absence of a specific XP installation CD, we will benefit from a couple of other avenues of investigation.

Please read and review this article which gives a good explanation of System File Checker and includes a "work-around" by utilizing the i386 folder as a reference point for System File Checker.

Here are the Steps you will take:

Step #1:
Please insert Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 CD into your CD or DVD reading drive.
The CD may begin to load/open, with a splash screen informing you of options for reinstallation and repair.
That's not a problem. — Simply Close any such splash screen by Exiting/Closing.

Open My Computer or Windows Explorer and navigate to the CD Drive into which you inserted the Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 CD.
Please browse the contents of the XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 CD.
We are looking for a folder named – i386 <– this folder should be approximately 475mb in size and hold 1,000 - 1,500 files.
It is one of the main Folders and should appear as the 3rd or 4th Folder in the list.
Please use the keyboard command combination ctrl-C to copy the i386 folder and all of its contents.

Next Navigate to your Root Directory. This is your C:\ drive.
Paste the i386 Folder you just copied from your Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 Disk to your C:\, such that you end up with a Folder located and named exactly as follows… C:\i386

Remove the Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 CD from your machine.
—————————–
Step #2
(requires a change in your Registry) (Use the Export function in Regedit to back up the file before changing it)
If you are not sure or not confident about this safeguard step of backing up your Registry, ask your Malware Expert, or I will assist you here.

Now you will need to tell your computer's SFC utility where to look for the files on your PC.
Do this in the registry with Regedit:

GoTo: Start - Run (type)regedit.exe - hit Enter
Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
You will see various entries here on the right hand side.
The one we want is called: SourcePath

It probably has an entry pointing to your CD-ROM drive, and that is why it is asking for the XP CD.
All we need to do is change it to: C:\ (because your i386 now exists on your C:\ Drive)
Simply double click the SourcePatch setting and a new box will pop up allowing you to make the change.
(type over top of the current reference to CD-ROM or hit Delete, then (type) C:\

Now restart your computer and try sfc /scannow again!

So, is this going to fix problems with SFC 100% of the time?
No.
There are other steps that can be taken, but the above will get SFC up and running, most of the time.

Post back if you continue to have difficulty.

Your Malware Expert will notify me if further assistance, (for instance) with a "R" Non-Destructive Repair Installation, is necessary.

Best Regards,
Doug
I'm very sorry for the delay. Thank you Doug for you help and advice. I actually had Dell send me the right disk since they confirmed that I was sent the wrong disk. I was wary doing anything with the disk I had if it wasn't the right one. So, today I received the correct disk and did the steps Trevuren told me to do previously. I appreciate all of your help! Thank you! So, Trevuren, I ran the scan and inserted the disk and it accepted it. I rebooted. My computer seems okay, though when I use taskmgr, I still cannot see usernames. IE7 also still runs slower. Thanks.
Please provide me with a fresh HJT log. There are some startup items that are optional and we will see if stopping them from running continuously and automatically will speed things up.

The task manager problem is in Doug's domain.
Here's the new log:

The following list contains a long list of programs/services that have a few factors in common. They are either not required or user's choice and none need to be loaded at startup and run continuously thereby monopolizing precious system resources. By stopping them from starting, you should be rewarded by a marked increase in performance. They will not be deleted, they will remain available on an "On demand" basis either through your Program Startup menu or through your Control Panel.

If you need to know what these 04 entries actually are and do, go to the following site and type the name in brackets into the search box and press enter. It will help you with your decision if needed.

Please RUN HijackThis
  • Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

Followed the steps and deleted what you wanted. I forgot though, to do that first thing you asked–to look at the castlecops thing and accidently disabled the software for my notebook's touchpad and nearly freaked myself out. So, is there anyway of reversing that one so I don't keep having to go dig that program up to restart it so I could use my touchpad (I rely on it so much, you see)? It was O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SynTPEnh] C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPEnh.exe.

Thank you. Things seems to be running more smoothly. IE seems a little more happy; the only thing that's still nagging me is the lack of user name in the taskmgr and a few things I had to reset (my clock for some reason was off by an entire day) and the fact that when I put my computer into hiberate it now wants passwords to go back in and it didn't need that before for the other user on my computer. ???

But thanks. I think everything is pretty good on this end. :D
We will deal with one problem at a time mostly because I will have to research the others:

To restore the registry entry:
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click Open the Misc Tools section
  • Click the Backups button
  • Place a check mark next to: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SynTPEnh] C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPEnh.exe.
  • Click Restore
  • Click Yes
  • Reboot your computer, and try out your touchpad
  • Re-open HiJackThis and post a new logfile for review and tell me if the ability to automatically access your touchpad has been restored.

Edit: Have you got the user names column turned on? (View-> Select Columns -> tick user name)
Here's the new log below:

My touchpad problem has been restored. Thank you.

Yes, the user column is checked. Here is a picture showing what my task manager looks like. It's not a super huge deal; it's just weird. I like to see what's running under what name in case I have to end processes and whatnot. Sorry it's a bit small, but you can see that the only thing with a user name is system idle process. Oh yeah, also when I click onto the "user" tab, it shows nothing anymore.

Thanks!
That photobucket image looks exactly like mine. However I do have a user tab..

Try the following:

1. Go Start >> Run and type Services.msc then OK. This will bring up the Services window.

2. On the right hand side, locate and highlight the following service: Terminal Services

3. Once that service has been selected click on "Start Service". This should change the Status of this service to Started

4. Now return to the highlighted service and right click on it to obtain a context menu.

5. Choose Properties and from the "Startup Type" drop down box, choose Automatic

6. Click OK and Exit the Services window.

7. Now try Task Manager again and see if there is any improvement.

8. Please post results back into the Forum.
