Hello–whew, I'm nervous about all this. I've done everything I have the ability to do.

I'll give you guys the in depth explanation of my problems…Two days ago, I suppose I suffered an attack. I stumbled upon a "bad" website and my firewall started giving me all sorts of alerts that things were trying to connect that weren't supposed to be connecting. I ran a virus scan and a spybot scan and cleaned out many trojans (I know one was called winshow.exe and it came with a lot of friends.) The next day, I turned on my computer and got an error: "Windows is missing some files that it requires to run properly; please insert your Windows disk" (I paraphrased there). I insert my disk and it tells me it's the wrong disk. I blue screened a few times (IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL; I think). Afterwards, I ran more virus scans and cleaned more viruses. Along the way, I discovered something called pmkji.dll and pmkji.exe in the windows/system32 file and, looking at the properties, it appeared yesterday at about the same time I had the attack. I didn't mess with it at that point. I downloaded avast! at the advice of a friend and ran that. It found pmkji.dll but couldn't delete it b/c it was being used by some other process. pmkji.exe was deleted with success.

Now, I'm getting something called Windows DEP errors with Windows Explorer which I've never had before. The process lsass.exe suddenly is using a lot of CPU ALL the time, which it's never done, and I'm running double processes on things and I don't understand why. The doubles are weird because the second one has a space between the file name and the .exe. I don't know what that's all about. Overall, my computer's speed is slower than it's ever been and I just want to get some experts to help me clean this thing up.

Please help?

Hello Rine and welcome to the What the Tech Forums

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your problem. It appears likely that your system has been infected with a Vundo trojan file infector. This trojan renames legitimate startup executables and replaces them with malware. We will attempt to reverse the process but please be advised that most often, there are one or two programs that can not be salvages and will need to be reinstalled.

Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE
  • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
  • First, physically disconnect your computer from the internet.
  • Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log
  • Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix.
  • Now you may reconnect your machine to the internet and post the logs

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Okay; I did what you asked. When Combofix was preparing to restart my computer, I received the "windows needs to reinstall files required … " message again; however, it didn't appear when the computer finished rebooting. Also, in my taskmgr, I can't see the user name any more. You know how it says if the user is "system" or the user name–well, they are all blank now. What's up with that?

One more note: when combofix made the log, I did the HJT scan as you requested, but I had to restart my computer again because I couldn't get my wireless connection to work. Do I need to redo the HJT log or is this okay? Thanks!

Here's the logs:

Well, as previously explained, some files were saved, some had no replacements. We will finish cleaning up the infection and then try replacing some lost files.

A.
1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.
2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\59D79F0C92.sys

Folder::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ardCo02
C:\Temp\cEeer12

RenV::
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_03\bin\jusched .exe

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\Load]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\AOLDialer]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\BitTorrent]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"MSKDetectorExe"=-

Driver::
Cavasm

KillAll::
Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.

5. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

[external image: Posted Image]

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

6. ComboFix will automatically REBOOT your machine when the KillAll:: switch is used..

7. Next, re-enable all the programs that you disabled prior to running ComboFix.

8. Post the following logs/Reports:
  • ComboFix.txt
  • Fresh HijackThis log run after all the other tools have performed their cleanup.
CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

B. Once you have finished the above, immediately continue with the following scan that can easily take one hour or more to complete:

Please use the Internet Explorer browser, and do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner
Choose "Global" from the popdown window at the top of the page.
Click Yes, when prompted to install its ActiveX component.
(Note.. for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the "Accept" button of the license, click on the "Zoom" tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.)
The program launches and downloads the latest definition files.
  • Once the files are downloaded click on Next
  • Click on Scan Settings and configure as follows:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK and, under select a target to scan, select My Computer
When the scan is done, in the Scan is completed window (below), any infection is displayed.
There is no option to clean/disinfect, however, we need to analyze the information on the report.
[external image: Posted Image]
[external image: Posted Image]
To obtain the report:
Click on: Save Report As (above - red blinking arrow)
Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar
In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select: Text file [*.txt]
Then, click: Save
Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your reply, along with a fresh HijackThis log

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.
I apologize for the delay. Here's what you requested.

A. Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u3…allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs, double-click on and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Now to Clean out the Java cache:

Go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
  • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
  • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 Checked
    • Downloaded Applets
      Downloaded Applications
      Other Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
    Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

B. Please empty the content of the following Quarantine:

C:\Documents and Settings\username\.housecall6.6\Quarantine\

C.
We need to make all files visible:

To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:

1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
2. Double-click on the My Computer icon.
3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
4. After the new window appears select the View tab.
5. Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
6. Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
7. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
8. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
9. Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
10. Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

D. Please locate the following file using Windows Explorer and DELETE it:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\Yazzle.zip

E. Launch Notepad, and copy/paste everything in the codebox below into the new document, including the word REGEDIT4. Go up to "File Save As" and click the drop-down box to change the "Save As Type" to "All Files" and save it to your desktop as fixme.reg.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"ehTray"=-
"ISUSPM Startup"=-
"MSKDetectorExe"=-

3. Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop. It should look like this [external image: Posted Image]. Double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer Yes and wait for a message to appear similar to Merged Successfully.

4. Restart your computer.

F. Finally, please tell me how things are running. If all is OK, we can start the final cleanup procedures.

Trevuren
I did everything you asked. My computer seems to be running all right. However, IE7 takes a little longer to open now. I still periodically receive DEP errors regarding Windows Explorer. That's it, I suppose. Thank you.

A. Please RUN HijackThis
  • Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BuildBU] c:\dell\bldbubg.exe

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System

B. 1. Please go to Start -> Run -> type cmd and press Enter.

2. At the command prompt type sfc /scannow, making sure to put a space between the "c" and the slash, and then press Enter. This will run the System File Checker.

3. Follow the prompts, and insert your Windows installation CD if requested.

4. Then please REBOOT your computer.

C. Your system should be running better now. If there is no more evidence of the presence of malware, just give me the OK and we will proceed with the final cleanup procedures.
I'm on part B right now and I've run into a problem. It wants me to insert "Windows XP Professional CD" now and the one CD I found with my files that I believe is the right one is called "Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2." Well, I inserted it and then it tells me it's the wrong CD. But I'm 85% certain that it's the only one I got with my system. Any advice? Thanks.
If the one you have says that it is the Home version then that is probably what you got from your dealer. You never upgraded?

We will investigate this a bit further:

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your desktop.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, a text file will open - Main.txt
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of Main.txt in your thread in the HijackThis Log Help Forum.
  • An additional text file, Extra.txt,will also be available (by default) in the following FOLDER, C:\Deckard\System Scanner.
  • Please go to that FOLDER and also copy the contents of Extra.txt to your post as well.
Note: some firewalls may warn that sigcheck.exe is trying to access the internet - please ensure that you allow sigcheck.exe permission to do so.

What DSS will do:

  • Create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • Clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • Check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have it installed.

Post Logs:
  • DSS Scan Results: contents of 1) Main.txt and 2) Extra.txt
Here you go. Is it useful for you to know that on the bottom of my laptop it says "Windows XP Media Edition 2005"? I'm so frustrated with myself because now I'm doubting whether I have the right disk or not. :( I don't think I've ever upgraded from what I got.

According to the last log your system is as follows:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional (build 2600) SP 2.0

You would need to find an XP Pro SP2.0 (build 2600) disk (EXACTLY) to perform the sfc /scannow procedure.

Your recovery partition on the Dell may well be the correct version. You would remember upgrading to XP Pro because it would have cost you a couple of hundred dollars to do so.

If we attempt to launch into a non destructive restore on two different platforms (XP Home and Pro), we could cause some major problems.

Did you buy this directly from Dell?
