Hello! I was referred to your site by a friend at the office. Anyway, I came back from a holiday trip and found the computer
in some state of infected/cleaned etc. My daughter's boyfriend had been trying to "fix" the computer. It looks like it was
infected with the W32.trats!inf and Trojan.Adclicker and Trojan Vundo viruses. He ran NAV scan/cleanup in safe mode but the
problems still exist:

On boot:
- the recovery console or win xp media center boot options appear - have to select xp media center or it goes to recovery console
After selecting xp media center:
-Windows warning pop up that says: SymSPort.exe application error and then: unknown software exception (0xc06d007e) occured in the
appliation at location 0x7c812a5b

After I acknowledge this the system displays the user menu, like normal..

Click on my user (HP Admin)
Then a Rundll error pop up occurs
-error load Windows\system32\spdimqsl.dll

Then on top of that windows wants to generate a error report to send to microsoft regarding the SymSport.exe issue.
Then another pop up stating windows\system32\ddcyy.exe cannot be found.
NAV has reported that it was finding infected files but now doesn't seem to be working at all and the NAV icon isn't in the system
tray anylonger.
I hope you can help and I appreciate anyting you can do to guide me out of this nightmare! Regards, D

Hello whatthe? and welcome to the What the Tech Forums

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your problem.

Please download this file - combofix.exe by sUBs
  • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log.

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Regards,

Trevuren

A. Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u3...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs, double-click on and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Now to Clean out the Java cache:

Go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
  • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
  • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 Checked
    • Downloaded Applets
      Downloaded Applications
      Other Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

B.
1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.
2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dkqptwur.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsqmidps.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ionvidqq.ini
C:\found.002

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{1dd68699-7397-4ae3-9b7b-181721815d19}]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"ctfmon.exe"=-
"49bc0447"=-
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\nnnkjki]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar]
"{B2847E28-5D7D-4DEB-8B67-05D28BCF79F5}"=-
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{B2847E28-5D7D-4DEB-8B67-05D28BCF79F5}]

KillAll::
Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.

5. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

Posted Image

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

6. ComboFix will automatically REBOOT your machine when the KillAll:: switch is used..

7. Next, re-enable all the programs that you disabled prior to running ComboFix.

8. Post the following logs/Reports:
  • ComboFix.txt
  • Fresh HijackThis log run after all the other tools have performed their cleanup.
CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Your system needs a few tweaks but we will do them once he have the results of the following scan. We must eliminate the possibility that other "baddies" still lurk on your system.

Please use the Internet Explorer browser, and do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner
Choose "Global" from the popup list at the top of the page.
Click Yes, when prompted to install its ActiveX component.
(Note.. for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the "Accept" button of the license, click on the "Zoom" tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.)
The program launches and downloads the latest definition files.
  • Once the files are downloaded click on Next
  • Click on Scan Settings and configure as follows:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK and, under select a target to scan, select My Computer
When the scan is done, in the Scan is completed window (below), any infection is displayed.
There is no option to clean/disinfect, however, we need to analyze the information on the report.

To obtain the report:
Click on: Save Report As (above - red blinking arrow)
Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar
In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select: Text file [*.txt]
Then, click: Save
Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your reply, along with a fresh HijackThis log

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

A. Please empty your Symantec Antivirus Quarantine of its content. If you are unsure as how to proceed, the following information should be of help: http://www.upenn.edu...61/navce76u.pdf

B. A. Please RUN HijackThis
  • Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [49bc0447] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\spdimqsl.dll",b

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.
B. 1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.
2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

Folder::
C:\found.002

Driver::
FileObjInfo

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.

5. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

Posted Image

6. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix then post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
  • Combofix.txt
  • A new HijackThis log.
CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

C. Please tell me how things are now running. If everything is under control, we will proceed with the final but essential cleanup procedures and recommendations.

Regards,

As far as how things are going? MUCH better thanks!

I still have an issue when the computer reboots of it wanting to default to the recovery console rather than the XP media center - I have to be quick on the selection during reboot to highlight the media center or else ... well you know.

Also the SymSport.exe issue still exists - says it can't find. Then the normal user login screen appears. Now there are not the RUNDLL issues anylonger :D however a popup to microsoft still occurs wanting me to notify microsoft of the SymSport.exe issue. And after clearing that popup one more popup happens... It's a firewall popup that asks me if I wish to continue blocking the HP site. For this firewall popup I've been selecting "ask me again later" .
Once that's clear the computer seems to be operating very well - Thanks for your help thus far!

Regards,

Whatthe?

  • Download Silent runners by Andrew Aronoff from here
  • Unzip/extract it to a folder on your desktop
  • Double click on Silent Runners.vbs to start Silent runners
  • If your antivirus warns you about a script, allow it to run, this script does not contain malicious code
  • You will be asked if you want skip the supplementary search, click Yes
  • Wait for Silent runners to inform you that it has finished
  • A log will be created in the same folder as Silent Runners.vbs
  • It will have a name of Startup Programs (yourusername) date-time.txt
  • Use notepad to open that file
  • Copy and paste the contents as a reply to this topic

Also,

1. Download "Registry Search Tool" (RegSrch.vbs) from HERE to your desktop

2. Start the program by clicking on its icon and paste in the following string: SymSport.exe.

3. Wait for it to complete the search, click ok at the prompt.

4. Then when wordpad opens, copy/paste the text as a reply into this thread.

I still have an issue when the computer reboots of it wanting to default to the recovery console rather than the XP media center - I have to be quick on the selection during reboot to highlight the media center or else ... well you know.

This is an Operating System issue, I believe. Not a malware one. After I post the final cleanup procedures, I will close this thread. I suggest that you open one in the Windows forum where a Tech expert will undoubtedly provide you with better advice than I can on this matter. You may want to quote the url of this topic in case the tech needs to refer to some of the reports.

All the other problems are firewall related. It appears as if you are missing files in the firewall module of your security program. I recommend that you unplug from the net and reinstall the whole suite. That should clear up the problem.

Congratulations, your logs look CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you system is completely clean:

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

    • Posted Image

  • When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

1. Make your Internet Explorer More Secure
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab.
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.

    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt.
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable.
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable.
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt.
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt.
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt.
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
2. Update your Anti-Virus Software - I can not overemphasize the need for you to update your Anti-virus application on a regular basis. With the ever increasing number of new variants of malware arriving on the scene daily, you become very susceptible to an attack without updated protection.

3. Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. Without these you are leaving the back door open.

4. Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

5. Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

6. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Download and install Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide real time spyware and hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would with your anti-virus software. A tutorial on installing and using this product can be found here:
Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware

7. Finally, I strongly recommend that you read TonyKlein's good advice So how did I get infected in the first place?
