The fix should only take a very short time. When the fix is completed a message box will popup telling you that it is finished. Click the Ok button and Notepad will open with a log of actions taken during the fix. Post that information back here.

Let me know of any problems you encountered performing the steps above or any continuing problems you are still having with the computer.

Karen,

You can download HijackThis from here.

Run OTMoveIt again:
  • Double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\FILES\MOD\mirc612.exe/data0001.bin
C:\WUHist\mirc612.exe/data0001.bin

Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Open Notepad, and copy everything in the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy).
  • Save the Notepad file to your Desktop as OTM.txt.
  • Close OTMoveIt
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Please include the contents of OTM.txt in your next reply.

Now Kaspersky also shows a couple of infected emails, so I would like you to open your email client, and delete all emails from the following addresses.

Do not open them or any attachments they may have!

Now lets Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove any infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected, but that's good news).

Turn OFF System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Restart your computer.

Turn ON System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

System Restore will now be active again.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I also want to check to see if you have the Windows Recovery Console installed. Though not essential at the moment, before we go I want you to install it as an aid against future infections, if it is not already present.
Please download bootcheck.cmd to your desktop.
Note: In Internet Explorer click the link to the script to download. In Firefox, Right Click and choose "Save as"
  • Double click bootcheck.cmd to run it (A command window will open briefly then close).
  • A Notepad window will then open with some text in it
  • Please Highlight, Ctrl + A, and Copy, Crtl + C, all the text and post it in your next reply
Note: A copy of the Notepad file will be located in your root drive, usually C:\bootcheck.txt
Regards,
RatHat
Thanks for the link Rat Hat
Here is a HJT log however I don't have the Move it any longer either :o
I also cannot visually see any emails dated prior to 2005 - is there another way to get at these infections? I know I been having problems so I am figuring something is acting stealth and I can't find it.
Here is the OTMoveIt log….(found the exe file in a previous post and used it)
File/Folder C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\FILES\MOD\mirc612.exe/data0001.bin not found.
File/Folder C:\WUHist\mirc612.exe/data0001.bin not found.
OTMoveIt2 v1.0.8 log created on 01182008_164252
Will post other logs as I finish them….
I have stopped and restarted the system restore as asked however I have no antivirus now and no firewall since removing AVG and Comodo….plus how do i get rid of the email things that Kaspersky says is there?
The system seems to be ok - a bit slow to start up and shut down but otherwise good.
What pieces do I need in place before we put this thing to bed and call it good?
I appreciate your help and will be joining the classroom to learn how to do this not only for my own benefit but to give back on here.
Thank you!!
Karen
Hey Karen,
Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the box next to the entry listed below.
O20 - AppInit_DLLs:
Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.
Please download DrWeb-CureIt & save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.
Reboot your computer in "SAFE MODE" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".
Scan with DrWeb-CureIt as follows:
  • Double-click on drweb-cureit.exe to start the program. An "Express Scan of your PC" notice will appear.
  • Under "Start the Express Scan Now", Click "OK" to start. This is a short scan that will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the Yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
  • Choose the "Scan tab" and UNcheck "Heuristic analysis"
  • Back at the main window, click "Select drives" (a red dot will show which drives have been chosen)
  • Then click the "Start/Stop Scanning" button (green arrow on the right) and the scan will start.
  • When done, a message will be displayed at the bottom advising if any viruses were found.
  • Click "Yes to all" if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can see the icon next to the files found. If so, click it, then click the next icon right below and select "Move incurable".
    (This will move it to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if it can't be cured)
  • Next, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list.
  • Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
  • Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
  • Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Hopefully, after running DrWeb and doing a bit of a cleanup, we will be able to put this to bed.

I would also like you to reinstall AVG Antivirus, and see if it runs without problem. If you are happy with it, you can keep it, if not I will recommend another AV.

Before we go I will also give you another option for a free firewall to use.

Regards,
RatHat
Hey Rat Hat - WOW that Dr Web was a L O N G running program!! I completed it in safe mode and am posting the log file here after reboot. When the pc restarted I got a black and white screen (like the safe mode screen) that said Hardware Monitor Detector found a problem press f1 to go to set up or f2 to continue. I pressed f2 and continued because I wasn't sure what I would even be looking for. There doesn't 'seem' to be any hardware issues upon using the pc at this point. Karen, Could you reboot your computer and see if you still get the black and white screen. If it does, go to the setup and follow the prompts. Regards, RatHat
Morning Rat Hat I turned off PC last night and rebooted this morning without the black and white screen. It booted up normally. Cheers Karen
Rat Hat
I am actually navigating around (been a bit hesitant because I feel the system is vulnerable without firewall and AV so haven't been doing much - but went to Food Network and been navigating a bit - seems to run smoothly, no errors - have some slowness and difficulty loading some pictures on some pages and then not on others. Firefox was no longer my default browser so had to put that back as default but no big deal there. Load and shut down seems a bit quicker and overall seems a bit smoother. I tried to go to my Yahoo messenger and got a windows defender message telling me it was blocked and did I want to Unblock or continue to block….i said unblock and it went through. I still cant find the 2003 emails Kaspersky says are infected and there..but mail client seems to run ok. Overall I think I am in much better shape but still feel vulnerable without firewall and AV so haven't gone too many places or done my banking or work email or anything with passwords really.

Hey Karen,

OK! Well done, your log is clean again! :thumbsup:

The first thing we need to do is to remove all the tools that you have used. This is so that should you ever be re-infected, you will download updated versions. It will also remove the quarantined Malware from your computer.

Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
Click the Clean up button
Click YES at the next prompt (list downloaded, Do you want to begin cleanup process?)
Click Yes to the reboot.

OK, lets carry out a few preventative steps to make sure you reduce the risk of further infections.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now lets Reset and Re-enable your System Restore again.
Turn OFF System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Restart your computer.
Turn ON System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
System Restore will now be active again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Next, lets reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.

Reset Hidden/System Files & Folders
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
  • CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Next lets look at Firewalls. As Comodo had conflicts on your system, try Online Armor (Free edition) personal firewall
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

On to personal Anti Virus programs. To start with, try re-installing AVG, if you have errors, uninstall it, and try one of the other two.

Another essential is to keep your computer updated with the latest operating system patches and security fixes. Windows Updates are constantly being revised to combat the newest hacks and threats, Microsoft releases security updates that help your computer from becoming vunerable. It is best if you have these set to download automatically.

Automatic Updates for Windows
  • Click Start.
  • Select Settings and then Control Panel.
  • Select Automatic Updates.
  • Click Automatic (recommended)
  • Choose a day and a time when you know the computer will be on and connected to the internet.
  • Click Apply then OK.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In addition to Windows updates, you also need to ensure that your version of Java is the latest.Click here to download the latest version (Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4). Once downloaded, install it and then Reboot your computer.
It is most important that you also uninstall older versions of Java.
  • Click Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs.
  • Delete all Java updates except Java ™ 6 Update 4
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

OK, now lets download some preventative programs that will help to keep the nasties away! We will start with Anti Spyware programs. I would advise getting all of them, and running each at least once a month.

Anti Spyware
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy a powerful tool which can "search and destroy" nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Nearly done! If you like to use chat, MSN and Yahoo have vunerabilities that can leave you open to infections. There are however a couple of very good, Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN):
Instant Messengers ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lastly, it is a good idea to clear out all your temp files every now and again. This will help your computer from bogging down and slowing. It also can assist in getting rid of files that may contain malicious code that could re-infect your computer.
Temp File Cleaners
  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Note: Do NOT run this program if you have XP Professional 64 bit edition.
  • ATF Cleaner A very powerful cleaning program for XP and Windows 2000 only. Note: You may have this already as part of the fixes you have run.
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein.
I will keep this log open for the next couple of days, so if you have any further problems post another reply here.
Best regards,
RatHat
