Hi RatHat I downloaded the WinPFind program and extracted it to the Desktop and attempted to run it in Normal Mode. Unfortunately the same problem exists - You don't have permissions :( I also renamed HiJack This to Karen.exe and it too did not work in Normal Mode. When I attempted to run the WinPFind in Safe Mode I got an I/O error and then the application screen appeared. I attempted to run the scan and got an exception error and could not get any scan done. I did not attempt to run another Hijack This log as I don't think anything has changed. Now what should we try? I will wait to hear from you again. Thank you :wacko:
OK Karen,

Lets see if you can run Icesword in Normal Mode.

Don't worry about the power of thi program, we are only doing a scan now. The power comes in its ability to delete difficult files, and if you do not know what you are deleting, you can then damage the system.

For now though, I need to see the logs, so that I can try to figure out what is causing this problem.

If you cannot run Icesword from Normal Mode, do not try to run it from Safe Mode. Just let me know what happens OK.

Regards,
RatHat
Rathat, Well it seems this bug has thwarted me yet again as I cannot run ICESWORD in normal mode. It tells me that I do not have permission to run that program. (Windows cannot access this file or application. Any ideas? Thanks again for your help and expertise. ~Karen
Ok…bit of good news….my son Jason got Icesword to run in normal mode and was able to get logs and ssdt hidden files…..he did this by going to the taskmgr and instructing it to run Icesword so they must not have thought to reset those permissions…here is the information you asked for. First is the processes log from Ice Sword: (No Red stuff shown in these)

Now on the SSDT tab in ice sword, we found two paths….displayed numerous times that were in red….however different indexes and different names (NTCreatePath, NTPortKey, etc) were referenced but the path was the same

the first and by far the most numerous was:

\SystenRoot\System32\DRIVERS\cmdguard.sys

This appeared in red NUMEROUS times

this one appeared twice: \??\C:\ProgramFiles\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 guard.sys

What would you like us to do next?

Thanks for all help and expertise….it is greatly appreciated

Karen
Good morning Karen, Well the good news is that you do not appear to have a rootkit involved here, cmdguard.sys is part of Comodo, and the other path is part of AVG. OK, could you uninstall Comodo Firewall from safe mode, and then try booting into normal mode again. See if you now have your permissions back and can run WinPFind. If this does not fix the problem, reboot into Safe Mode again, and this time, uninstall AVG 7.5 Antivirus. Reboot back to normal mode, and try WinPFind again. Let me know the results. Regards, RatHat
Good Morning RatHat
WOOO HOO I uninstalled Comodo Firewall, rebooted and I AM BACK ONLINE!! I was able to successfully run the WinPFind scan and the log is below:

Ok…..so where were we? LOLOL
Whew! I am relieved to be back into the 'normal' world again, however I realize I still have no Firewall and we haven't finished addressing the initial issue so I won't get too excited yet. I will await further instructions :wavey: :D

< End of report >
Hi Karen,

Well great news! It looks like there was a conflict between Comodo and one of your other programs, so that is good news. At least is wasn't a new rootkit infection, which really could have be hard work to get rid of!

So lets get back to finishing up cleaning your machine. First off, please delete IceSword, so that it can not be used accidentally.

Now, start WinPFind3U. Copy/Paste the information in the codebox below into the pane where it says "Paste fix here" and then click the Run Fix button.

[Registry - Non-Microsoft Only]
 < Internet Explorer Settings > ->
 YN -> HKCU: URLSearchHooks\\{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} [HKLM] -> Reg Data - Key not found [Reg Data - Key not found]
 < Internet Explorer Bars [HKCU] > -> HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Explorer Bars\
 YN -> {32683183-48a0-441b-a342-7c2a440a9478} [HKLM] -> Reg Data - Key not found [Reg Data - Key not found]
 [Empty Temp Folders]

The fix should only take a very short time. When the fix is completed a message box will popup telling you that it is finished. Click the Ok button and Notepad will open with a log of actions taken during the fix. Post that information back here.

Let me know of any problems you encountered performing the steps above or any continuing problems you are still having with the computer.

Next, lets get back to where we were earlier and run an F-Secure online scan for Viruses, Spyware and RootKits:
  • Go to http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Start scanning button. A window will pop up.
  • Allow the Active X control to be installed on your computer, then click the Accept button
  • Click Full System Scan and allow the components to download and the scan to complete.
  • If malware is found, check Submit samples to F-Secure then select Automatic cleaning
  • When cleaning has finitished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report)
  • Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post
If Automatic cleaning with Submit samples hangs, click Cancel, then New Scan
  • When the cleaning option is presented, Uncheck Submit samples to F-Secure
  • Click Automatic cleaning
  • When cleaning has finitished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report)
  • Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post
Notes:
  • This scan will only work with Internet Explorer
  • You must have administrator rights to run this scan
  • This scan can take a while, so please be patient

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now lets see if we can run DSS. Firstly, delete the copy of DSS that you have and also the folder C:\Deckard if DSS managed to create it.
Next, download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop again.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, DSS will open two Notepad files: main.txt and extra.txt
  • Use Save As to save both Notepad files to your Desktop and post them in your next reply.
Note: A copy of these files can be found in you root drive, usually C:\Deckard\System Scanner\
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So in your next post, let me have the WinPFind results log, the F-Secure results, and the two logs that DSS will create.

Oh, and let me know how your computer is running now.

Regards,
RatHat
Good Evening RatHat After boot into 'Normal' mode … I get a message from AVG Anti Virus that says: Could not initialize AVG AntiVirus kernal interface Application cannot run. I clicked ok and went on to delete IceSword then ran the WinPFind and it rebooted then I pasted the log. Will now attempt the rest of the steps listed. Here is the first log from the WinPFind: [Registry - Non-Microsoft Only] Registry value HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks\\{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} not found. OK, lets do a bit of a tune up of your machine.

Firstly, lets get rid of all the old prefetch files, that could be slowing things down a bit:

Click Start then Run, type prefetch then press enter. Click Edit then Select All, (all files will highlight), right click any file, click delete, confirm. This will empty all the old prefetch files, and Windows will rebuild the new ones that it needs. If you want to find out more about what Prefetch does, click here.

Now, lets run Disk Cleanup:

Click Start then All Programmes, then Accessories, then system tools. Locate Disk Cleanup and click to run it. Clean all your drives, then reboot your computer.

Next run a defrag: Start then All Programmes, then Accessories, then system tools. Locate Disk Defragmenter and click to run it. Highlight a drive, and click Defragment. Repeat for each of your drives.

Another good way to improve the speed of your computer is by downloading and installing Tune-Up Utilities.

Run Tune Up disc clean up

Run Tune Up registry clean up

Disable the anti virus programme then click Optimize and Improve to run Reg Defrag, the screen will lose colour during the process which can take a few minutes and then needs a reboot

Check the anti virus programme is running

Those will have cleared the drive of obsolete software errors

These are suggestions for making the most of the free trial

Click optimize and improve then system optimizer to optimize the computer, select computer with an internet connection from the drop down menu, this also requires a reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to accelerate downloads, select the speed just above your actual connection speed, this requires a reboot.

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to run system advisor.

Rat Hat: Here is the OTM log - C:\WINDOWS\DHU.EXE moved successfully. OTMoveIt2 v1.0.6 log created on 01152008_172840 I Ran ATF Cleaner I ran PreFetch I ran Disk Cleaner I am about to reboot and run Disk Defragmenter At this point do we know what I had? Do we have it identified and fixed? I took off the AVG 7.5 AntiVirus and AntiSpyware cuz I was getting errors - and we have no firewall at the moment - any suggestions what I should do next? i will be back when Defrag is done Cheers! Karen
Karen,

Basically all you had was some adware, and a trojan. All are now gone.

The problem we had was that Comodo caused a conflict with some software that you have in your computer. This doesn't happen that often, but it does sometimes. It is definately something I will remember in the future!

When you have completed all the tuneups, I would like you to delete the version of WinPFind that you have, and download WinPFind35 Beta to your Desktop.

Double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named WinPFind35u on your desktop.
  • Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
  • Open the WinPFind35u folder and double-click on WinPFind35U.exe to start the program.
  • Check the Radio buttons for Files/Folders Created Within 90 Days and Files/Folders Modified Within 90 Days
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.

Please attach the log in your next post.

With the log from this, I will be able to see if there are any leftovers that need cleaning up, then we can look at a different AV and Firewall, and cleanup the unwanted tools that we have used.

How is the computer behaving now?

Regards,
RatHat
Hi Rat Hat Well I finished the Defrag and Optimization last night Tonight I ran the new WinPFind3u and have attached the logfile here. The system seems ok - it still runs a bit slow on boot up and shut down. I haven't seen the Exploit Obscured.HTML error however I had had some filtering softward called BSafe that I may want to put back on - I am not sure if there will be problems once I do that. I will wait to hear from you 📎1WinPFind35.Txt
