Hi all,

Happy New Year!

I have been infected with Simfraud. Spyboot detects it, gets rid of it but when I restart it comes back again. Right now my desktop is red and has a figure that looks like a skull that says: Your privacy is in danger. Download privacy protection software now. And of course every few minutes I get a IE windows popping up telling me I should install some software. Before I posted I read the advice given by this site. Ran AVG in Safe Mode- it found 212 medium and very few high risk worms, ran a debug software but its still here!

The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. So lets do this to the end!

• All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
• These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.

Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files::

Click Start. My Computer.
Select the Tools menu Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Search for and remove
Now I want you to search for and delete the following folder and all it's contents if present. If you need help finding them.
Click start /search/ all files and folders/ look for More advanced options. once in there select the first 3 boxes.
Please just remove the files/folders I listed in BOLD

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
Smitfraud by S!ri

• Double clcik the smitfraud.exe
• When promted
  Press any key to continue.
• Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with any others I have asked for in your next reply.


Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user. When prompted by allow it to run




IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!
If you do and smitfraud isn't present it will have undesirable effects

Hi bob4, thanks for your reply.

I did what you asked me for, I can send you the HJT log.. BUT, I tried to remove

C:\WINDOWS\alxvdvm.dll
C:\WINDOWS\domnftwost.dll

But I got the following message: Cannot delete "filename"; access denied.
Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use.

My disk is not full nor write protected

The file C:\WINDOWS\bvtqfvx.dll is not there.

Before posting, I ran Spyboot to see if I can get rid of those files and it found a folder c:\windows\privacy_danger. It had the "skull icon" I got rid of it.
But I still couldn't delete the other 2 files.

Do you still want me to run SmitfraudFix ?

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. Search for and remove
Now I want you to search for and delete the following folder and all it's contents if present. If you need help finding them.
Click start /search/ all files and folders/ look for More advanced options. once in there select the first 3 boxes.
Please just remove the files/folders I listed in BOLD

I can not give you trhe full name for the folder as part of it is hidden from me.

But it will start just like this

CAMPFI

Located in

C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\CAMPFI....

If your unsure just copy the name of the folder for me to look at.
It will also have this file in it.
OWNSAXISHECK.exe

Download and install CCleaner from here


If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for Cookies is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.

• Set Cookie Retention.
  Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
  Under the Cookies to delete pane, highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently (those companies or sites with which you regularly visit or do business), and click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to keep pane.
  
• Reset Temp File Removal for Regular Use.
  Click on the Options block on the left. Select the Advanced button.
  Check "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours".
  
  
  Now run the program and click on Run Cleaner
  ( Do not use the Registry function to clean anything with this program. Having anything auto clean your regisrty is risky).

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner
Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner
You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases
Click OK
Now under select a target to scan select My Computer


Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.



The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.

Now click on the Save as Text button:

Save the file to your desktop.

Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Hi bob, Just to let you know I am going to be away till sunday evening, so I cannot send you the logs till then. I found the "Camp Five Wipe" folder, it had OWNSAXISHECK.exe , I deleted the folder. As I write this I am running CCcleaner but I must go (its 12:43 am and I am leaving at 8 a.m) and must close this window. I will get back to you on monday with the new HJT log and Kapersky. Have a nice weekend and thanks!
