When I open Internet Explorer, I receive an error message "an error has occurred in the Google Toolbar. Internet Explorer will close".
Options to send or not to send an error report both result in IE closing. I have run an AVG virus and anti spyware scan to no avail. I have posted my Hijack this log below. Any help much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hello,

Not looking at much wrong with your log. Do this.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

The rest of your log looks fine  What I would suggest you do is go to your Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall the Google Toolbar.

Let me know if any of this helped??
Thanks for the advice Ken. I'll let you know how the computer performs after 1 week. Some days there are no problems and then the pop ups happen. I've carried out your suggestions but I would prefer not to uninstall the toolbar unless I have to because I find it very useful. I'll be in touch Neil
Hello,

You may have a corrupted program in the Google Toolbar, you can try uninstalling it and see if this fixes it, then you can do a clean download and install and try using it again.

You never said in your original post about any popups???

Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan: Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
Post the log along with a New HJT Log into your next reply.
All seems to be OK after your initial post. I did uninstall and re-install before I posted my 1st log but had the same problem. The popup was the error message telling me that IE will close, but I should have made that clearer. Apologies. Anyway, a week has passed and all seems OK so thanks for your help. I did run a Kaspersky scan as a precaution and nothing showed up,
Glad things are running well for you, some reading to keep you more secure.
