[SKonline]

When I boot up my PC I get a black screen with a blinky icon but it won't launch Windows. It occurs after the Windows XP splash screen but before the desktop launches. Before this occured my PC was runing slower than normal. I can get my PC to launch the desktop if I hold down the F1 key and go into my BIOS setup screen hit esc then enter, then the desktop will launch. I've read Microsofts (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314503) answer to this question but there pages don't make much sence to me I just have beginner PC knowledge.
What I've noticed and tried.
When I boot my power-on self test screen says I have 512 MB when in fact I have 1G + a 512MB
One of my old 512 memory chips was acting strangly, So I replaced it with 1G and now I boot to black screen only sometimes not everytime.
Going in and out of BIOS to boot desktop doesn't allways work.

For now remove Ad-Aware 2007 in add and remove programs.

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following,

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot in safe mode, instructions here.
Some of these files my have hidden atributes.
Click Here Should you need instructions for Showing hidden files and folders in Windows.
Once in safe mode, Click start / then my computer / local disk then follow the process tree.
Or using Windows Explorer, locate the first file right click then select delete.

Delete the following folder(s) listed in bold.

It is important to remove older versions as these are the ones with the holes in them.
You will be surprised when you go to add/remove to see all of the versions sitting there.

I've completed all the steps you advised.
Tell me what is so bad about Trellian? I've had the freeware program for a few months in order to help me create a webpage. I did remove the program as you instructed, just curious why you had me delete it.
My PC boots up just like it should, no longer getting stuck after HP splash screen and before Windows XP loadup.
Let me know if there is anything more to be done.

Then reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account
which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because
you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
