Three times today my computer has shut down after flashing a blue screen with text that disappears to quickly to read. After restarting automatically, Windows Error Reporting is corrupted also. Getting frequent messages from SpyBot Resident about changes to registry related to "WinLogon Notifiers" (cryptnet; crypt32; cscdll). Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Hello, and welcome to the forum.

My name is Simon V., and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Is your Norton subscription up to date?

Step 1

Please disable TeaTimer, as it may interfere with the fix. This is done in two steps:

First step: Right-click the Spybot icon in your system tray (looks like a blue and white calendar with a padlock symbol).

  • For version 1.5: Click once on Resident Protection, then right-click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the system tray should now be colorless.
  • For version 1.4: Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident.

Second step: Open Spybot Search & Destroy.

  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode. When prompted, answer Yes.
  • Go to the bottom of the vertical panel to the left, click Tools.
  • Click Resident (a white and red shield, located in the panel to the left).
  • If your firewall gives you a warning, allow it.
  • Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer" (Protection of over-all system settings) active.
  • OK any prompts.
  • Go to File > Exit to close Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • Reboot your computer for the changes to take effect.

Note: Be sure to enable TeaTimer when you are clean!

Step 2

Please go to VirusTotal or Jotti and upload C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\qttask.exe for scanning.

For VirusTotal:

  • Please copy and paste C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\qttask.exe in the text box next to the Browse… button.
  • Click on Send File.

For Jotti:

  • Please copy and paste C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\qttask.exe in the text box next to the Browse… button.
  • Click on Submit.

Copy/paste the results in Notepad and save them to your desktop.

Step 3

Open HijackThis, perform a scan and put a check next to the following items (if present):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://www.begin2search.com/sidesearch.html
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {671EB3E7-0955-03FE-2BB4-0495CBA2819E} - (no file)

Close all programs except HijackThis and click on Fix checked.

Step 4

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner.

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner. On the welcome screen, click Accept.

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Install.

  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings.
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:

  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

    Extended (if available, otherwise Standard)

  • Scan Options:

    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases

  • Click OK.
  • Now under Select a Target to Scan:

    Select My Computer.

  • The program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop.

Step 5

Open HijackThis.

  • Click on the Config button.
  • Click on the Misc Tools button.
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list… button and save the file to a convenient location. When you press Save, Notepad will open with the contents of that file.

Step 6

In your next reply, please post:

  • whether your Norton subscription is up to date
  • the Virustotal/Jotti results
  • the Kaspersky Online Scan results
  • the HijackThis Uninstall List (uninstall_list.txt)
  • a new HijackThis log
Thanks for your help. Still mucho problemas, but here's what I've got for you:

1) Norton subscription is up to date (67 days remaining).

2a) Virus Total Scan- 0 bytes size received / Se ha recibido un archivo vacio
B) Jotti Scan- The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware
is prohibiting you from uploading this file.

3) KasperSky Scan- I tried several times to run the Extended scan on My Computer, but my system would shut down at around 30% scanned (which took an hour). So, I ran the Standard scan on Critical Areas and was able to at least complete that scan. Here are the results:

Step 4

In your next reply, please post:

  • the Combofix log (C:\Combofix.txt)
  • a new HijackThis log
Was able to complete all tasks you assigned. Unfortunately, poor performance persists. It takes 2-3 minutes just to open my homepage! Under the processes tab in Windows Task Manager, a process called "services.exe" is sucking up all of my CPU (always 85-100%). I'm also getting prompts that my "Virtual Memory Minimum" is too low. Anyway, here are the logs you requested:

Hi :)

Step 1

Please go to VirusTotal or Jotti and upload C:\Program Files\Project.exe for scanning.

For VirusTotal:

  • Please copy and paste C:\Program Files\Project.exe in the text box next to the Browse… button.
  • Click on Send File.

For Jotti:

  • Please copy and paste C:\Program Files\Project.exe in the text box next to the Browse… button.
  • Click on Submit.

Copy/paste the results in Notepad and save them to your desktop.

Also do this for C:\Program Files\AagB2F4.exe.

Step 2

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your desktop.

  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, Deckard's System Scanner will open two Notepad files: main.txt and extra.txt - please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply, along with the Virusotal/Jotti results and a new HijackThis log.
Performance is improving somewhat. During the Deckard scan, Norton detected and removed Trojan.Peacomm. Here are the scan results you requested:

Hi :)

Total Physical Memory: 248 MiB (512 MiB recommended).

I think this is your main problem, the Combofix log also shows that you only have 56 MiB free Physical Memory. You should at least have 512 MiB in total, with Windows XP I'd even recommend 1024 MiB.

C:\Program Files\Project.exe
C:\Program Files\AagB2F4.exe

Do you know what the above files are?

Step 1

Please go to VirusTotal or Jotti and upload c:\windows\system32\clean61f6-59e4.sys for scanning.

For VirusTotal:

  • Please copy and paste c:\windows\system32\clean61f6-59e4.sys in the text box next to the Browse… button.
  • Click on Send File.

For Jotti:

  • Please copy and paste c:\windows\system32\clean61f6-59e4.sys in the text box next to the Browse… button.
  • Click on Submit.

Copy/paste the results in Notepad and save them to your desktop.

Step 2

Open Notepad (Go to Start > Run, type Notepad and hit Enter), and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::

C:\WINDOWS\qawpap.exe

Registry::

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"NAV CfgWiz"=-
"QuickTime Task"=-
"KernelFaultCheck"=-
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\active setup\installed components\cc647e57-209b-462f-8a97-655338836cb3]

Click on File > Save as….

In the File Name box, copy/paste CFScript.txt (Note: Do not change the filename!)

Click Save (Save the CFScript in the same location as Combofix.exe)

[external image: Posted Image]

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.
It will create a log. Be sure to save it to a convenient location.

Step 3

Step 4

In your next reply, please post:

  • the Virustotal/Jotti results
  • the Combofix log (C:\Combofix.txt)
  • the Kaspersky Online Scan report
  • a new HijackThis log
I'll look into upgrading my RAM ASAP. I was considering doing it anyway. Don't know what C:\Program Files\Project.exe or C:\Program Files\AagB2F4.exe are for. Should I double-click on them and see what happens? I was able to complete an extended Kaspersky scan this time, & it looks like it detected a bunch of bugs. Here are the scan results you requested.

1) VirusTotal & Jotti Logs

VirusTotal Scan Results:

0 bytes size received / Se ha recibido un archivo vacio

Jotti Scan Results:

The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file

2) ComboFix Log

Hi :)

Don't know what C:\Program Files\Project.exe or C:\Program Files\AagB2F4.exe are for. Should I double-click on them and see what happens?

No, we'll just delete them. I don't think they'll be missed ;)

Open Notepad (Go to Start > Run, type Notepad and hit Enter), and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Hi :)

Congratulations, your log looks clean. Please advise of any problems you are still experiencing, or follow these simple steps to keep your computer clean in the future:

Click Start then Run….

  • Type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. (Note: The space between the x and the /u needs to be there)

    [external image: Posted Image]

  • This will uninstall Combofix.

Make your Internet Explorer More Secure

  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab.
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.

  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt.
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable.
  • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable.
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt.
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt.
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt.
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Use a Firewall - Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. The Windows firewall isn't sufficient as it only monitors incoming connections.

Here are a few (free) firewalls, please download and install one of them:

Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://update.microsoft.com/ regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Update All Your Security Programs Regularly - Make sure you update all you security programs (Anti-Virus, Firewall, Anti-Malware) regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
Upgraded to 1024MB RAM today. Everything working great now. Questions about firewall: 1) In the Windows Security Center, under "Firewall", it lists "Norton Internet Worm Protection" as my active firewall. I don't have Windows Firwewall active, because when I activate it, I get warned not to have 2 firewalls active simultaneously. Is your recommendation to use only the Kerio or Comodo firewall, and disable my Norton Internet Worm Protection and Windows Firewall? 2) I have something else active called SpywareGuard. It was recommended to me in this forum years ago. However, it's definitions date back to Jan '04 and it tells me that they are up to date when I attempt to update. Should I continue to use this? 3) Is there anything else I should have active besides the firewall you recommended, my Norton Antivirus protection, and SpyBot TeaTimer? 4) I periodically scan with SpyBot and AdAware (LavaSoft). Are these still the best products available? Thanks again for all your help, Jeff
Hi :)

1) You should indeed only have one firewall active at a time. The Norton firewall will suffice though, I think I missed it. There's no need to replace it if it doesn't give you problems.

2) 2004  I'd download the newest version from their site: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html and see whether that solves it.

3) No, that should suffice. Too many realtime protection isn't good either, the different programs could slow down your system and/or conflict with each other.

4) Yes, Ad-Aware and Spybot are excellent programs and I would've recommended them if you didn't have them installed.
