Hi Experts,

Please can you cast an eye over these logs and point to any offenders. I am reasonably computer literate but have been struggling with explorer crashes identified by "Windows Explorer had encountered a problem and needs to close" but the error report contains no module name. DrWatson can crash just after. It occurs usually when left click switching between explorer and other windows, but also sometimes without involving the explorer window. Sometimes it fails to restart automatically and needs more than one manual 'explore'exe' kick.

I am of the opinion that this is a windows not malware problem because I can't identify any malware. The machine runs symmantec corporate AV, plus a fairly regular clean with Ccleaner and scan with AdAware. Firewall is Sygate free so that's perhaps a little out of date now. As well as full scans for these, I also ran a full Kaspersky AV scan, which picked out 39 false positives in a very annoying way, and Housecall AV which was clean. Following your pre-post instructions, I ran ATF cleaner which found only my retained cookies left by Ccleaner, Spybot which found a few policy registry settings and a safe boot into AVG, which found a few tracker cookies. Here's that report:

I recognise most of the stuff. The Kodak might be a legacy from an old camera, lxy stuff is Lexmark printer and AccessManager is a dial up that can be disabled. Some seems to be related to the Dell laptop hardware. However there are some unknowns to me like iereg 'blocker'.

Other info: I ran Dell diagnostics to check h/w, with no errors.
I have tried a WinXP re-install from CD not windows, and it hangs 34 mins in every time. If I disable a bunch of the hardware then it hangs later claiming it can't find any files on the CD. In either case I have to reload the whole machine from backup. However, if I use the same CD onto a clean hard disk, it installs, so it is something to do with the existing files.
I have run SFC.EXE /SCANNOW, and after I corrected the 'Source' registry path this completed. Prior to that it complained the source CD was wrong! It didn't fix the explorer crashes though. Maybe XP would re-install now, not tried yet.

My last clue is from eventvwr.msc, which I have not used before but came across the tip. All 3 sections have errors, for example from Applications lots of these:
Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x01ae4680.
and occasionally:
TrueVector driver: Driver install or load failure: LoadNTDeviceDriver. Win32 error: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.
which I read is Cisco VPN, although Cisco VPN seems to work fine.

From Security, Failure Audits like this:
Privileged Service Called:
Server: Security
Service: -
Primary User Name: r49961
Primary Domain: R49961-11
Primary Logon ID: (0x0,0x1E95A)
Client User Name: -
Client Domain: -
Client Logon ID: -
Privileges: SeTcbPrivilege
No idea what this means. My account r49961 is an administrator, r49961-11 is the computer.

From system, failures of Computer Browser timeout, failures of a parallel port I don't have on the laptop, and these:
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
black
Possibly from black ice, on the machine prior to sygate?

Congratulations to anyone who's got this far, and thanks in advance for the help!

Mike
Hello and welcome to the forum.Sorry about the delay in responding :( If you still need help, Scan again with HijackThis, and copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Still problems I'm afraid :(

Here’s the latest HJT log, it should be identical. Symptoms persist: explorer crashes, occasionally fails to re-start. IE6 also crashes and I managed to isolate one cause: the ‘Links’ folder installed by default had reappeared in my favorites (it’s empty). If I delete it, then the next IE window I run up will crash. With windows explorer, one new trigger of a crash occurs when I unplug my GSM phone from a USB port. As usual, module is ‘unknown’.

I really don't think you're having a spyware/malware/virus but lets see what we find.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Next:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Next:

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you, combofix.txt. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick while its running. That may cause it to stall
