[Closed] Hour Glass

Hello to any one who can help. I was told by a coworker to use this forum and see if my hour glass can be eliminated . I had a custom built desktop made about 3 years ago from a great guy who was a wiz at computers and he has moved . This computer was fast with out any problems untill abouth a month ago . I can only guess what might be wrong . Everyting I do has the hourglass show up …even as I type this and wanted to correct something the hour glass pops up . Open word or just moving a window ,even the start button , Right click the desktop, during any programm EVERYTHING! I run CAD and first the hour glass then not responding wait a minute or more and it does come back for me to just get some more work done till AGAIN hour glass . Some times it frezzes to where I can only do a rest. I loaded the free AVG , that found some trogans and other virus stuff . I'm running Windows XP

Hello and welcome to the forums

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.


Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Next:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

Note:
(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)


It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Next:

Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here and install it. When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open.

If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
  • The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
  • It is essential that you get the update - keep trying until successful. (Note: If you have problems getting the update, you can download an installer for the full database from here (save it on your desktop). Once you have downloaded the installer, make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed and then double-click on avgas-signatures-full-current.exe to install the database).
Please set up the program as follows:
  • Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is… click active. This should now
    change to inactive.
  • Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
  • Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
  • Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
  • Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
  • Under Reports - Select Do not automatically generate reports.
  • Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.
Close all open windows.
Do not run a scan yet.

Reboot your computer into SafeMode
You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears.
Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.


IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or
programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab
    then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little
    time.
  • Let the program scan your computer.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
    • Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button (*** This must done before saving the report ***)
    • When the program has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
    • Then click the Save Scan Report button.
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
    • Right-click the AVG Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
    • Reboot in normal mode and copy the report back to this topic along with a new HijackThis log.

Hello , this is the reports I hope it was done correctly you will know if it was I guess . I'm have so much trouble just trying to get this computer to do anything in a timley manner . It mentions to apply all actions I think I did that with the avg scan . Thanks for any help and advice you you can give I,m sure your computer has'nt any problems or is slow working :huh: :D

Hello , this is the reports I hope it was done correctly you will know if it was I guess . I'm have so much trouble just trying to get this computer to do anything in a timley manner . It mentions to apply all actions I think I did that with the avg scan . Thanks for any help and advice you you can give I,m sure your computer has'nt any problems or is slow working :huh: :D

Now it looks like you're running 2 anti-virus programs.

Never install more than one Antivirus and Firewall! Rather than giving you extra protection, it will decrease the reliability of it seriously!
The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Also because more than one Antivirus and Firewall installed are not compatible with each other, it can cause system performance problems and a serious system slowdown.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.


1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove either:
Avast4
AVG7
Viewpoint <–All Viewpoint programs listed

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Hello again, I had uninstalled the anti virus Advast 4 and Viepoint now the free trial of AVG has expiered and am now withought any anyi virus I will purchase AVG if it is a better anti virus you recomend, ferthermore an error mesage comes up while scrolling thru email in outlook (C:\PROGS~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgxch32,dll) I'd guess because AVG expired. there are two Anty spyware AVG and SPYBOT should one be eliminated? To describe how my computer is acting it seems to have speed improvment but still slugish I'm jumping thru some programmes and loading is slow the Hour glass still comes up but not complete freez or not responding, thou windows media player is one… kind of freeking out music and video stutter stop . OK as I'm typing things are going to worse Outlook is showing me the Hourglass again windows themselves seem to shadow over each other, MS IE is slow too .also copy and pasting the hijack log took a bit to long. I hear the hard drive clicking speraticly . Could I be a hardware issue ? video card , hard drive ?

Grisoft\AVG7 anti-virus is free. You don't need to purchase it. They do have a paid for version though.

Grisoft\AVG anti-spyware and SPYBOT are fine together. The ant-spyware trail period does run out after 30 days but you just need to manually run the updates.


Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:
