System extremely slow when booted normally

This is a Dell Laptop running Windows XP SP2. I'm in safe mode with networking now because when you boot the computer normally, it is extremely slow. It takes a long time to boot and when you hover the mouse over the taskbar it shows an hourglass. After a while the hourglass goes away, but then it doesn't respond to any mouse clicks. I tried to ctrl-alt-del to see thr running processes, but nothing happened. At that point I powered the system down and booted it in safe mode with networking and logged on as the administrator, and that is how I am on the internet now typing this.

I ran HJT and got the log, but it was in safe mode, so I don't know how useful this will be. There are some things in there that seem suspicious. I'll try to post another log if I can get this thing to boot and respond to mouse clicks. Here is the log.

Hi CMD9999 and welcome to TomCoyote's forums :wavey:

I am currently looking over your log. As I am an Undergraduate, everything that I post to you must be checked by an Admin or Moderator. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long. I will post back shortly with a potential fix.

Thanks for your patience!
Download GMER and save it your desktop:
  • Extract it to your desktop and double-click GMER.exe
  • Click rootkit-tab and then scan.
  • Don't check "Show All" box while scanning in progress!
  • When scanning is ready, click Copy.
  • This copies log to clipboard
  • Post log in your reply.
Hi, I did not get to follow your recent instructions but will do so tomorrow 11/1 and post the new log back to you asap Thanks so much.

Hi, Very poorly I'm afraid. I ran or tried to run the Kaspersky scan and all was going well until about 45 minutes into the scan. At 62% the pace was so slow that it never got farther than 68% before it froze. I started the scan at 1:30 pm and let it run through the night. It only get 6% more done in 15 hours and scanned a total of 32381 files. The read out box indicated 1 virus found and 3 files identified. Initially it was running fine and at a fast pace and then boom just so slow, I was hoping for a strong finish but no luck…what do you suggest?
I recommend you to save/print these instructions since you won't be able to access them while in safe mode.

I am having trouble with this download. I have downloaded the AVG anti-spyware but I am having trouble with the update. The system even in safe mode is SO slow that it just sits there…. I am having to stop the machine and restart over and over. I will continue to try both with the link and the direct click. I did note that when I first installed this there was no where that I saw to check the "Launch AVG anti-spyware" like you asked. I hope the rest was loaded correctly. I will forge on and try to get this going, it's making me nuts!
Hi, Since you are not able to run diagnostic tools and execute my instructions I think it would be wise move to reformat/restore your system. Since it's Dell laptop you should find instructions for restoring on Dell's website.
