got another problem with my browser but it only does it with firefox. i start up my browser and then it just hangs and then another window pops up with "Joke of the Day" from beautyscreens.com. i dont recall accepting a cookie or downloading anything from their site. ive used ATF to clean firefoxes stuff out ive ran scan after scan(avg antispyware, spybot, superantispyware)i went and did a search for this joke of the day and a way to remove it and the hosting site wants me to download one of their pop up blockers, i dont hardly think so. ive even uninstalled firefox and removed any other files that were associated with it from everywhere in my machine and the registry, restarted my machine, created a new system restore point, and then reinstalled firefox. everything ran fine last night for the two hours that i was on. then i get on this morning and my browser hangs up for a couple of seconds and then that dayam joke of the day pops up and causes some lag on my system. then i get that microsoft error reporting and firefox shuts down. i cant even load firefox without that extra window popping up with joke of the day. i like my firefox browser is there anyway to reclaim it? here is my hijackthis log

Since my wait for a response generated my curiosity i started doing searches for an answer to my problem. I found no solution until today when i installed an extension for my browser and found an extension that I never installed called OFoxB!, so I searched the internet for it and found this article at wilderssecurity.com

"Looks like there is old malware going around and still no one looked at it.

beautyscreens.com claiming screensavers and wallpapers are %100 free of malware after research when you install one of screensavers from beautyscreens.com what it does is installs drops a trojan or malware it installs BHO into IE called Ofb1 and extension into firefox called OFoxB it's easy to get rid of,but only 2 Anti-Spyware developers aware of it here is some info: http://www.fileresearchcenter.com/O/OFB1.DLL-10093.html"

I ran a superantispyware scan and found nothing. The funny thing is, superantispyware never picked it up, and it should have. I have (so far as I can tell) removed this malicious BHO successfully. Unless there is something someone else can add I think this topic can go in the resolved section and closed.
You need To disable TeaTimer, it can stop our fix.

1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts

The best way is to do both, Right click the system tray icon and shut down. This will reset TT's registry snapshot. Then, open spybot in advanced mode and turn it off. When cleaning is done, open Spybot in advanced mode to turn back on.

Once fix is completed in the all clear post!!

Enable Teatimer

Open Spybot
Click on Tools in bottom left hand corner.
Click on Resident.
Check Resident "TeaTimer" box.
Click on Allow change ONLY to popup box with:
Entry: SpybotSD Teatimer
Click on Mode, select Default mode
Close Spybot

You want to fix these:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O1 - Hosts: 66.98.148.65 auto.search.msn.com
O1 - Hosts: 66.98.148.65 auto.search.msn.es

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

I have (so far as I can tell) removed this malicious BHO successfully.

What did you do to remove it?
I ran spybot and it found 4 files related to firefox, funny , it didnt find anything before. what i did to remove it referring to OFoxB, since i was looking for an extension for firefox, i clicked on the tools button then went into add-ons, and thats when i found OFoxB, and i didnt remember installing it so i googled it, found out it was malicious and Beautyscreens.com was using it most recently so i disabled it then uninstalled it. ran spyware scans, nothing found, ran a couple of other scans, nothing. so i assumed that the problem was solved.

Here's my usual all clean post

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection.
You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Using IE-SPYAD to help block unwanted sites and activities

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.
