My computer is plagued by an annoying virus. The symptoms are:

-2 desktop icons (Live Safety Center and Online Security Guide) display on the desktop mimicking the Windows Security Center shields. Deletion attempts are pointless.

-Unremitting, periodic Internet Explorer pop-ups that advertise fraudulent virus protection software.

-Windows Task Bar notification balloons and critical system pop ups that have been hijacked to read like more-or-less the following:


System Alert: Malware Threats
Your computer is infected with a back door Trojan that allows the remote attacker to perform various malicious actions. Click this baloon to download malware removal software.

And many more like it...

I think it's a low-threat trojan that tries to get me to download malicious software by tricking me into believing that my computer has a serious infection that can only be remedied by "official security software." (nice try, pricks)
This is driving me insane. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome to the forums. Sorry for the delay but as you can probably see it is very busy in these forums and we are all volunteers here helping.

Download and Run ComboFix
  • Download this file from below:
    Here
  • Disable your Anti-virus and any real-time Anti-spyware monitors that are running.
  • Then double click Combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply with a new HijackThis log.
Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
Note 2: Remember to re-enable your Anti-virus and Anti-spyware.

NOTE: If you have issues connecting to your network or internet after running combofix you can either simply reboot, or do the following:
* Going to Control Panel > Network Connections.
* Right click on their Network icons & select "Repair"
or
Alternately, if the Network icon appears in the notification area in the lower right corner of Desktop, right-click it, and then click Repair from the shortcut menu.
