Hi:

I am using Windows XP with Firefox browser. For the last few days, IE is automatically popping out with a url of http://www.kurdsofts.com/contact.php. It is popping out for every 10 to 15 seconds and it is so annoying. Please evaluate HiJackThis log and tell me the appropriate action to get rid of this.

Welcome to the forum.

Enable hidden files:
Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.
Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK" (reverse this procedure when we are done)

——————-

Please find this file and upload it
HERE for a free scan - let me know the results.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\NETCMD.EXE

If it's too busy - try here:
http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html

——————-

If it turns out to be malware here's how to delete it:

1. Please download OTMoveIt by OldTimer to your desktop.
2. Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
Where it says: "Paste List of Files/Folders to be Moved", copy and paste next blue part into that Window:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\NETCMD.EXE

3. Then click the red Moveit! button below.
This will display the results in the right windows where it says Results on top
4. Copy and paste everything present in the Results window (right window) and save these results in notepad and save it on your desktop, because I need to see those results afterwards.
5. Close OTMoveIt

Note:
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

———————–

Close ALL programs down, leaving ONLY HijackThis running - Click Scan and…..
Place a check against the following items if found:

Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

Reboot and post a fresh HijackThis log and we'll take another look. MrC
Thanks Charlie!

Netcmd turned out to be a virus. I moved it using OTMoveIt and copied the text in the result pane. Restarted the system and ran HiJackThis and saved the log. But, when I checked the system32 folder, again netcmd.exe was there. When we are moving a file with OTMoveIt, where it moves?

Fine the logs:

Please download and install the 30 day trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 here:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/downloads-prod…s/frt/0?prd=asf

After it's installed…Check for updates:
Double click on the AVG-AS icon in the system tray or on the desktop> this will bring up the main program if it's not already up.

On the Main Page click the Update Tab and then Start Update.
Download and install any updates if available.

Select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine.
Under Reports
Select Automatically generate report after every scan
Un-Select Only if threats were found

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders.
Open up AVG-AS
Now click the Scanner Icon on top
Click on Complete System Scan
Be patient - it takes a while to run.

IMPORTANT! Do not save the report before you have clicked the Apply all actions button. If you do, the log that is created will indicate "No action taken", making it more difficult to interpret the report. So be sure you save it only AFTER clicking the "Apply all actions" button?

Once the scan is complete do the following:
If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply All Actions

Next select the Reports icon at the top.
Copy and paste the scan report in your next reply.

Close AVG-AS and Reboot in Normal Mode.

Post the log from AVG AS, ComboFix, and a fresh HJT log, MrC
AVG Spyware did not show me any report. Actually I used it few months ago and it has now become a free version. Now, the popus it not coming up. I think moving the netcmd with OTMoveIt solved the problem. When I start the system, it is showing a error msg that Windows is unable to find netcmd.exe.

The log looks OK…maybe you had to reboot in order for OTMoveIt to work.
Just do this….it's to delete a couple of reg entries:

Copy and paste the blue text below into notepad and save it as fix.reg
Make sure the Save as type field says All files.
Save it to your desktop.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon]
"Shell"=-
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{0c66fb5c-9b09-11da-a95a-0013d3052f30}]

If you did it right it should look like this:
[external image: Posted Image]

Now double click on it and allow it to merge into the registry.

Let me know how it is, MrC
Thanks Charlie: Now the error message is not coming. You were very helpful and your instructions were very easy to follow. Once again, thank you very much. Sincerely, Naveen Kumar
Thanks and Good Luck :)

If you have any questions - please post back

I'll leave you with……..

Some Preventive Maintenance:

Some of the programs you may have run create backups of what was deleted - you can safely delete them now: (delete folders in blue) You can also delete/uninstall the programs themselves.

C:\!KillBox (KillBox)
C:\VundoFix Backups (VundoFix)
C:\QooBox (ComboFix)
C:\SDFix\backups\backups.zip (SDFix)
C:\avenger\backup.zip (Avenger)
C:\_OTMOVEIT folder (OTMoveIt)

RVAXO:
You can use Uninstall.cmd to remove everything from RVAXO, it will be found in the RVAXO-folder on your desktop.

If you used AVG Anti-Spyware and/or SuperAntiSpyware………..

Open up SuperAntiSpyware > Preferences > General and Start-up > Start-up Options > Uncheck > Start SAS when Windows Starts.
"SAS free" provides no real time protection so there's no need for it to be running, I suggest you keep the program and update regularly - you can use it to scan for malware. It's an excellent program. When you want to start it - just double click on the SAS icon.

AVG Anti-Spyware will provide 30 days of real time protection and then after that you can use it to scan for malware - you'll have to manually update it first.

——————Must have or do:—————–

Don't open e-mail attachments without first scanning them with an up-to-date anti virus program, even after doing that I would be very careful. Don't click on any executables in e-mails or any other links that you're not sure of.
Don't believe e-mails from your bank, financial institution, etc asking for personal informations - they're most likely fraudulent no matter how authentic they look.
Watch your surfing habits, don't click on or download anything you're not sure of. Don't install a program that hasn't been recommended by a reputable organization.
