which the other PC connect thru mines to use.

Hi Switchkraft,

I have a small home network with only this PC and my Laptop. The following was the fix when my Sharing failed. My PC is the host computer.

Network Trouble shooting

Fix

start>run>type "\\PC" without the quotes >right click on file and scroll to>map network drive>choose drive letter>Make sure reconnect at logon is enabled> finish.

Problem was:

Zone Alarm on PC had lost IP range in Trusted Zone allowed to talk to Laptop.
Which is HOME 192.168.1.100 - 192.168.1.199 > IP Range TRUSTED. Interent Zone lowered to Medium.

When Updating Zone Alarm be aware this could happen again

This may help you to reconnect your sharing file and folder option, hope so as it worked for me.

I notice you have mcafee personal firewall so check your settings as my Zone Alarm Firewall settings were my problem as stated.

kind regards,
hi tallin im assuming with the '\\PC' i must insert my computer name. I did this but i get the error message \\[computername] is not available. you may not have permission to use this network resource contact the administrator to see if you have access permissions the server service is not started I am the administrator - it seems that the server service is corrupted i think what else can i do bar re-install windows? SK
1. Click Start, click Run, type ncpa.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties.
3. Click the General tab, and then click Install.
4. Click Service, and then click Add.
5. In the Network Service list, click File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks, and then click OK.
6. Click Close.

If no joy:

We need a tool from the Driver Development Toolkit.
Snetcfg is a sample tool in the MS Driver Development Kit
(…\src\network\config\netcfg) that must be compiled into an exe from the
source (C/C++?) before it can be used. It can list, install and uninstall most
network components (note: Win2k and WinXP only).

More about MS Driver Development Kit here:
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/ddk/winddk.mspx

Fortunately, you can download a compiled version of Snetcfg.exe (note different version depending on OS) at:
http://www.jsiinc.com/reghack.htm, tip 4705

1. Uninstall "File & Print Sharing" from the network properties panel and reboot (if F&PS is there), and then install F&PS (it will install
the server service again).

From a script, you can use snetcfg.exe to do this:
Open Notepad to create a new script:: FixF_and_P.cmd

snetcfg.exe -v -u MS_Server
snetcfg.exe -v -l %windir%\Inf\NETSERV.INF -c s -i MS_Server

2. In the alternative, here is a script that should do the job by first uninstalling (just in case)
and then installing F&Ps (you will need to update the content of the sSnetcfgPath variable):

Open Notepad to create a new script:: FixF_and_P.VBS

SetLocale "en-us" ' do not remove

If GetOsVersionNumber = 5.0 Then
sSnetcfgPath = "some path to snetcfg.exe for WinXP" <<— Put your path to snetcfg here
Elseif GetOsVersionNumber = 5.1 Then
sSnetcfgPath = "some path to snetcfg.exe for WinXP" <<— Put your path to snetcfg here
Else
' unsupported OS
WScript.Quit
End If

Set oShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")

sUninstCmd = Chr(34) & sSnetcfgPath & Chr(34) & " -u MS_Server"
oShell.Run sUninstCmd, 0, True

sInstCmd = Chr(34) & sSnetcfgPath & Chr(34) & " -l " _
& "%windir%\Inf\NETSERV.INF -c s -i MS_Server"
oShell.Run sInstCmd, 0, True

Function GetOsVersionNumber()

If Err.Number<>0 Then
' Hex(Err.Number)="80070002"

sOStype = oShell.RegRead(_

Select Case sOStype

End If
End If

' Setting Locale to "en-us" to be indifferent to country settings.
' CDbl might err else
SetLocale "en-us"
GetOsVersionNumber = CDbl(sOSversion)
End Function

(Note that after the procedure above, F&PS will be installed and *enabled*).

3. If you only want to add the server service with a script:

a, Export the registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer

from a machine where the server service is running as it should, to a registry
file with e.g. the name Lanmansvr.reg
Bring that file to the non-working computer, and copy it to the root of Drive C:

b. Then, on a computer with no server service installed, run the following two
command lines from a batch file:

%SystemRoot%\system32\rundll32.exe setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection Install.ndi132 %SystemRoot%\Inf\netserv.inf
regedit.exe /s C:\Lanmansvr.reg

Best wishes,
Bill Castner
