Hello,my friend referred me to this site b/c he said you guys are good. I'll admit I'm a total newb when it comes to computers. This computer is for my business and without it I'm screwed. I'm in the cell phone industry and basically my whole business revolves around it. I use Norton Antivirus 2007 and evidently it doesn't work for everything. I called nortons and they told me that could fix the problem remotely for $99, no thanks I rather throw it in the dumpster. I'm getting popups galore and my computer moves slower than usual. I've tried many virus scans with no success. I went to Hijack This and this is what I came up with, I think I have infected registry files. But which ones are infected? What can I do? Thanks in advance :)

Hello, and welcome to the forum.

My name is Simon V., and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

I called nortons and they told me that could fix the problem remotely for $99

$99 :o let's see what I can do for free ;)

Step 1

Please right-click on HijackThis.exe and choose Rename. Rename it to Scanner.exe.

Step 2

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES.
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • A logfile will be saved at C:\vundofix.txt.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Step 3

Please download SDFix and save it to your desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive% (Drive that contains the Windows directory, typically C:\SDFix)
  • Print these instructions or copy them to Notepad and save it to your desktop, as you won't be able to access internet in Safe Mode.
  • Please reboot into Safe Mode. To do this, go to Start>Turn off Computer, and select Restart. Rapidly tap F8 just before Windows starts to load. In the menu that appears, select Safe Mode (Without Networking)
Once in Safe Mode, do the following:
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double-click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any trojan services and registry entries that it finds, then prompt you to press any key to reboot; press any key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts SDFix will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished. Press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load, the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt (Report.txt will also be copied to clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Step 4

Please download and install CCleaner.
  • Open CCleaner. In the Left Pane, click Tools.
  • Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
  • In the lower right, click Save to Text File.
  • Pull down the arrow at the top of the Save dialog and choose Desktop as the location.
  • You can leave the filename as install.txt.
  • Click Save.
  • Exit Ccleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.
Step 5

In your next reply, please post:
  • the Vundofix log (C:\vundofix.txt)
  • the SDFix log (C:\SDFix\Report.txt)
  • the CCleaner Uninstall List
  • a new HijackThis log

Hi :)

Some of the infections are cleaned, but some of them tend to be quite persistent. Please do the following:

Step 1

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once the scan is complete, right-click inside the listbox (white box) and click Add More Files.
  • Copy & paste the entries below into the boxes:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\wygugbyj.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\mgdxshny.dll
  • Click Add Files and click Close Window.
  • Click the Remove Vundo button.

Step 2

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, Deckard's System Scanner will open two Notepad files: main.txt and extra.txt - please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.
Step 3

In your next reply, please post:
  • the Vundofix log (C:\vundofix.txt)
  • main.txt and extra.txt
  • a new HijackThis log

Hi :)

That's looking a lot better, still some leftovers to clean though:

Step 1

Download OTMoveIt by OldTimer.
  • Double-click on OTMoveIt.exe to start the program.
    Posted Image
  • Untick the option to Unregister Dll's and Ocx's (1).
  • Select the contents of the below codebox, then press Ctrl+C to copy it to the clipboard.
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\opxbguqt.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\wyxyjmgq.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\links.exe
  • In OTMoveIt right-click on the box labelled Paste List of Files/Folders to be Moved.
  • Click Paste (2).
  • Click MoveIt! (3).
  • If it asks you to reboot allow that.
  • A logfile will be created at C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log (where mmddyyyy_hhmmss are numbers giving date and time the log was created).
Step 2

Copy the text below into a Notepad (Go to Start > Run, type Notepad and hit Enter) document:

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{12330c10-9dcc-49e6-8c29-1fd1544ff707}]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{9E8692E3-A4F3-438A-A910-C529E80FE035}]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"e0cd25a8"=-
"links"=-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\lsa]
"Authentication Packages"=hex(7):6d,73,76,31,5f,30,00,00

Note: Make sure there is no blank line before REGEDIT4 and one blank line at the end.

Go to File > Save As:. Save the file as "Fix.reg" (Including the quotes)

Double-click on Fix.reg. When asked if you want to merge the file with the registry, click Yes.

Step 3

Open HijackThis, perform a scan and put a check next to the following items (if present):

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - - (no file)

Close all programs except HijackThis and click on Fix checked.

Step 4

Go to Start > Control Panel > Display Properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop... > Web tab.
Uncheck and Delete everything you find in there. (Except for "My Current Home Page")

Step 5

The Microsoft Java Virtual Machine, or MS Java VM, is used to run Java applets that can be found on web sites. When you visit a web site that has a Java applet, the MS JVM will compile and execute that applet on your machine. Microsoft no longer supports the MS JVM and it has become obsolete. There have also been known security issues with unpatched versions of the MS JVM and you should remove it and install the safer Sun JVM as an alternative.

Instructions on how to remove MS Java can be found here.

If you have a problem following the above instructions you can use this tool to remove MS Java.

Step 6

Your Java software is out of date. Follow these instructions to update it:
  • Go to Start and click on Control Panel, then double-click on Add or Remove Programs.
  • Search for previously installed versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment), and remove it. It should have this icon next to it: Posted Image
  • Then download and install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3.
Step 7

In your next reply, please post:
  • the OTMoveIt log
  • a new HijackThis log
  • How is your computer running now?

Step 4

Go to Start > Control Panel > Display Properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop... > Web tab.
Uncheck and Delete everything you find in there. (Except for "My Current Home Page")

Have you followed this step?

Please advise of any problems you are still experiencing, or follow these simple steps to keep your computer clean in the future:

Please open OTMoveIt.

  • Click on the CleanUp! button. If your Firewall gives a warning about OTMoveIt wanting to download a file, allow it.
  • Answer Yes to the prompt.
  • The program will ask for a reboot. Answer Yes.

Disable and Enable System Restore - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

Step 1: Turn off System Restore:

  • On the desktop, right-click My Computer
  • Click Properties
  • Click the System Restore tab
  • Check Turn off System Restore
  • Click Apply, and then click OK

Step 2: Reboot your computer.

Step 3: Turn on System Restore:

  • On the desktop, right-click My Computer
  • Click Properties
  • Click the System Restore tab
  • Uncheck Turn off System Restore
  • Click Apply, and then click OK

Note: Only do this once, NOT on a regular basis!

Make your Internet Explorer More Secure

  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab.
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.

  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt.
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable.
  • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable.
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt.
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt.
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt.
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Update your Anti-Virus Software - It is very imprtant that you update your anti-virus software at least once a week (even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti-virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that will come out.

Use a Firewall - Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. The Windows firewall isn't sufficient as it only monitors incoming connections.

Here are a few (free) firewalls, please download and install one of them:

Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://update.microsoft.com/ regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. An article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Stand Up and Be Counted! - Please take the time to tell us what you would like to be done about the people who are behind all the problems you have had. We can only get something done about this if the people that we help, like you, are prepared to complain. We have a dedicated forum for collecting these complaints: Malware Complaints. You have to be registered to post. After registering just find your country room and register your complaint. The infection you had was Vundo (Virtumundo)
