I haved noticed an increasing slow down in my machine. But since I don't use it much, I just thought it may have been due to lack of use. (I know that sounds silly, but it was a shot in the dark.)

I noticed a problem when I installed a Space Shuttle Simulator called S3. This sim is installed on my wife's machine and it runs fine. I installed it to mine and it runs at a crawl. I must also point out thatmy wife does not know the meaning of preventive maintenance on acomputer. When it "breaks", she hauls it to her IT cousin who keeps it for about 2 weeks and in his spare time finds the problem.

I have performed the standard'clean-up'of the machine (ie, removing excess software, altering starup config, etc.). It seems to have no effect. my fear is that my 11 year-old daughter may have downloaded something without my knowledge and is afraid to tell me. I have security protocols in place, but when i get up and take care of household duties, it takes 60 seconds for the screensaver to kick on.

Anyway, I have babbled enough. Tell me what I can do to fix my "oh sh**!"

Welcome back, sorry for the delay but we get a little overwhelmed with logs most times. I am not looking at anything bad on your system although I do see TWO ANTI VIRUS PROGRAMS RUNNING and this is not recommended. With AV software more is not better, this could possibly be whats slowing down your system. These programs use a tremendous amount of Precious System Resources and sometimes even conflict with each other. You have Panda and F-PROT, your call but you need to uninstall one of them via the Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel.



After you uninstall one of them, run this system cleaner.

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.
  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
    deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
  • Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

Thanks. I just ran the f-prot because it removes things at the DOS level. I usually use it and get rid of it. I have used CrapCleaner before and I do like it, but you do need to know what you are doing with it. I will give it a try and see what goes on. If nothing else, I will come back and check out the forums you recommended. Also, I may just get out the vacuuum and see if I have any lingering dust-bunnies. I have cleaned this machine about 4 times for dust. It seems to attract it. See you in a bit. Tony
