However the I run hijackthis I am seeing some things that shouldn't be there (ApplePie). Could enyone please help me clean this mess up? I REALLY appreciate any help! :)

Also noted that my version of java is out-of-date. I will update that in a moment.

Hi,

First of all… The current formatting of your log makes it difficult to read, so in notepad:
On top, click Format >uncheck Word Wrap

Also, I see you are running Teatimer.
I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.
When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.
How to disable TeaTimer <== click me for instructions.
After you disabled Teatimer, download ResetTeaTimer.bat to your desktop. (In case you use Firefox, rightclick the link and choose "save as").
Doubleclick ResetTeaTimer.bat and let it run.
This will only take a few seconds.

extra note.. I see you are running the combination Avast Antivirus + Zonealarm Firewall. Both are OK, but this combination is not really recommended, because there are a few compatibility issues and because of that, your system may freeze once in a while, internet connection may lag and it's also known that this combination causes a huge system slowdown. It's actually mainly zonealarm causing this.
In anyway, malware causes this as well, but I wanted to make you aware of this.

Do next please… * Download ComboFix from here.
**Save it to your desktop**

In case you have used Combofix before, please delete the version you are having and redownload it again, because Combofix is being updated everyday.

In case your Antivirus or any other realtime scanner is displaying an alert after you downloaded Combofix or while you use Combofix, please disable your scanner and redownload Combofix again. Because some scanners may see some combofix related components as suspicious and block or delete them while there's nothing wrong with them.

* Doubleclick combofix.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.
In case you see a sed.cfexe error with the option to send a report or not, choose "don't send".

When finished and after reboot (in case it rebooted), combofix will open again to gather the necessary information for the log. This may take a bit. When done, Combofix will close and a log should open, combofix.txt.
Post the contents of this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.
Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.

I would like to ask you some more about this, but I'll hold off until we are done with the cleaning.

Also, one note. After my original post, I renamed a folder called ApplePie in Program Files to another name. ie-improver.dll is still in it.

Here is the ComboFix log:

Hi,

This looks Ok again.

* Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /u

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Let me know in your next reply how things are now.
It all looks good now…All pop ups and IE redirects have stopped. Thank-you very much for your help.

In your first e-mail you said:

QUOTE(miekiemoes @ Nov 12 2007, 04:45 AM)
extra note..

Do you have another firewall that you would recommend? I have been using zonealarm for years now and have been satisfied with it. But when I do on-line gaming I have to disable both it and AVAST to get any kind of performance. Would prefer not to do that ;)

Also,,,what is bugging me is how I got this malware in the first place. An Avast scan didn't detect it. The only thing that I can think happened was I downloaded a zip file while Avast and ZoneAlarm were disabled (I usually don't do that). I unpacked it (was a map for a BF2142 Mod) and used it. The next day was the first time I started getting the problems.

Thanks again for all your help!
Hi,

If you don't really have any problems with the combination Avast/Zonealarm, I would leave it as it is. For the online gaming, this is a common issue and you'll notice this with most Antivirus and Firewalls. However, you can try Comodo firewall instead (make sure you uninstalled Zonealarm before) and see if that made a difference.
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
Comodo is for free.

Yes, could be because of that zipfile. Don't know where you downloaded it from, but if you download files/programs from questionable sites, in 80% of the cases, you may get infected.
Even though if you had the best Antivirus and Firewall running in the background, not disabled, you can still get infected if you visit questionable sites/P2P and download files from there. After all, scanners may not detect every new piece of malware - for that they need to have the sample first before they can add detection. The heuristic scan engines present in the Antivirus may already prevent most of these, but not all.

That's why, always be careful where you surf and where you download your files from.

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.

Happy Surfing again! :)
