ok, Even I am stumped as to how anyone can let a computer get this bad. I have a neighbors computer that she is wanting to use. I have done what I can to get spybot, adaware, avast on this thing. I also do have hijack this on here. Every time I try to get to you all with this thing ie has to shut down due to an error so I can post. I am running avast and it told me that I have on here win32 : Expiro. Ok I am good with that so I looked it up from my computer and I am working with it. bad news is, it seems (avast) to be moving almost every .exe to the "chest" due to infection. Yes I told it to do that. Avast is still trying to get all infected stuff to the chest as I type this. when it is done, do I have any hope of a recovery? I took off something like 111 malware with spybot and adaware can not run to a finish. I have no recovery cd and I believe this thing came with windows me but now has xp pro on it. ANY sugestion as to where to start? thanks guys Well, this is sort of your bad news worse news. The computer will no longer go into windows because one of the files is missing! I hate not being a software guru. I can no longer get into safe mode either. I CAN get to the menu for the safe mode and all the other things but nothing I know will help this thing. is there a command prompt I can do/use to fix this thing or is it just a carp** out of luck?
i would reformat/reinstall. while it might be possible to remove the virus, in the process it might leave behind a damaged .exe, setting you up for even more problems down the road. if it misses one .exe you will have to start over. also affects .exe's on other drives: internal/external/usb.
thank you shelf life I am not sure I can reformat/reinstall anymore. I have no recovery cd and I can no longer log into it in any way. I guess a command prompt might be the only way but I dont know and I am not versed enough. last but not least, I might just have to get it a new brain. That might / might not be the best idea.
hi dangedcoyote, i believe you could get a copy of fdisk from bootdisc.com and use it to reformat the HD. but of course you still need a installation cd to install xp and if you had that you wouldnt need fdisk as the install cd can reformat the hd before the install. i have never used a "recovery cd" but i dont think they would be of much help after a reformat of your HD.
