My computer has been running extremely slow lately. I have a feeling it's spyware and just performed a Hijack This. Any help would be really appreciated!

Hi,

Sorry for the delay in getting to your post. One of the first things I see here that will cause poor performance is you appear to have 2 Antivirus programs running, AVG and Symnantec/Norton. I would suggest you remove one of those first. Use Add or Remove Programs to do so. If you do decide to remove Norton (which is what I would do by the way) it can be stubborn to remove and you may need to use their uninstaller.

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…005033108162039

I also see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):
  • Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, highlight >>Viewpoint Manager<< , click Remove.
  • Do the same for each Viewpoint component.
Try those things and see if things improve. Let me know.
Dave
I removed the programs and things seem to be faster. If there is anything else I can do, please let me know. Thanks for your time and all of your help!
Post a fresh HijackThis log and I'll take another look. First,

Update Java Runtime:

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 3.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Click on the link named Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3
  • Click on the radio button to Accept License Agreement
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save the downloaded file to your hard disk
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 2 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Reboot your computer
  • Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer
Use ATF Cleaner to remove temp files,
cookies, cache, ect…

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Reboot if you haven't already done so and post a new HJT log.
Okay, I performed all of the actions and just ran a HJT. Thanks for all of your help so far!

Still some remnants from Norton, which is normal even after removing it with Add or Remove Programs. It doesn't like to go quietly. Try their removal tool first then post a new HJT log. If there's anything left we'll get it manually. Let me know how it's running too.

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…005033108162039
I already ran their removal tool, per your instructions in your first reply. I can run it again if that would help though. Again, thanks for all of your help so far.
Oh forgot I had mentioned that to you already.

Let's get the rest out manually.

Click Start->Run…
Enter the following commands one at a time into the window and click OK each time.

sc stop Symantec Core LC
sc delete Symantec Core LC

Run HijackThis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: NavLogon - C:\WINDOWS\
O23 - Service: Symantec Core LC - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.

Reboot and post a new HJT log, please also let me know how it's running.
Okay, I performed those actions and ran a new HJT. The computer is still running fairly slow and the music is like choppy and not smooth. Thanks for all of your help so far!

How much memory do you have? Try this for a quick look. Open Task Manager. Either ctl-alt-del one time or right click Taskbar and select Task Manager. Select the performance tab. Take a look here. What you're looking for is the CPU usage (in %) and PF usage (in MB). Let me know what those are running at on average. Do this while you have your normal running apps. open. IE, email, word, whatever you normally run at one time. If the CPU usage is consistently high click on the processes tab. Look for the process(es) that is/are using the highest percentage. It's going to bounce around so just look for 5 or 10 seconds and get an average. Also look at the Physical Memory (K) box. What is the Total and Available listed there. Report back with what you find. Particularly if you find one of the processes that is hogging the CPU.
I have 512MB Ram with a 60gb hard drive that is pretty free. Anyways, I found that the CPU Usage was sporadic. At one point, the system idle was 99% and the CPU usage was 25%. Most of the time, it didn't equal out to 100%. There was no process really hogging anything. The PF usage is at 384MB. Total physical memory is 514480K, available memory is 166750K.
